Unoial Villa News...

Looks like another slow news day for the press concerning Villa! Several papers have articles on Liverpool abandoning their quest for the signature of Gareth Barry and others say that Martin O'Neill has urged the player to stay and pick up on the great support he got from the Villa faithful yesterday. Full article: The Sunday Aston Villa Press Talk Round Up!

John Carew has said that he thinks the chances of Gareth Barry staying are 50-50. 'We all hope Gareth stays because he is such an amazing player and I definitely do because I really enjoy playing with him. The fans certainly could not have done any more.' Glad one of the players have picked up on the role the fans played yesterday, it must have buoyed Barry to see the faith we put in him surely?

As you'll no doubt have realised, Brad Friedel has signed for Villa! Friedel Confirmed, Signed, Sealed and Delivered. The former Rovers keeper has spoken of his agonising decision whether to leave Blackburn and also speaks of the ambition at Villa. 'Making this move was a very easy decision and a very difficult decision to make all at the same time. I'd been at Blackburn eight years and this was going to be my ninth season. The fans and everyone at the club have been terrific with me. In saying that I'm really excited to be here at Aston Villa. Being able to work with these players, with Martin O'Neill and with Mr Lerner is exciting for me. I've really got the feeling this club is going places and that's the main reason why I'm here.' Nigel Hokey-Cokey says Wilfred Bouma will bounce back from his injury. On AVTV he said: 'These thinks happen in football. It was a horrific incident and when I saw the injury I was close to tears. I had to move away. It is awful when it's one of your own team-mates. He's a great guy and my thoughts go out to him and his family. He will get through this because he is a strong character - one of the strongest in the dressing room. He'll come back stronger than ever!'

Wilf, get better soon from all at Vital Villa. The unlucky Dutch international left-back was left in agony as he dislocated his right ankle during a challenge in the match v Odense. The players who came over to the bench looked distraught and you could clearly see from my pitch level view Wilfred Bouma's ankle at a different angle to his leg. Ouch. Full article and image as well as plenty of get well soon comments: Get Better Soon Wilf

Martin O'Neill stated after the Odense match, 'it was a great, great goal from a great, great player.' following the wonder goal by Ashley Young to put Villa into the Uefa Cup qualifying rounds. 'I'm very pleased. We won the game and I think we deserved to win it but it was tough. 'They had a couple of chances in the first-half and it would have been very awkward for us had they scored. But I felt that we dug in and Ashley came up with a fantastic goal to win the game. 'Once we got our noses in front we saw it through better than we did last week. We'll come on a lot as a consequence of this game and I'm just really pleased to have got through.' Full quotes: Young Wins Managers Praise

Scott Carson has spoken about his time at Villa and says that Villa were after experience which is why we didn't bid for him. Nothing to do with the fact he was a very average keeper then!? No, to be fair the price the Baggies have paid, £3.5million, isn't bad and he might well progress to be a decent keeper, but quite rightly we need someone who is good enough for now and in Brad Friedel, hopefully with Brad Guzan as understudy, we have that. Villa Wanted Experience Says Carson

Villa will find out if USA keeper Brad Guzan will be granted a work permit so he can complete his transfer to Villa on August 1. Martin O'Neill has spoken to the official site about the 23-year-old Chivas (Major League Soccer) shotstopper saying: 'The hearing is now next week. It should really have been yesterday but it was postponed for one reason or another. So we've been given an opportunity next Friday to do it.'

My answers to the questions posed for the fans section of the new bumper edition of 442. The pre-season edition is now out and features Vital editors very heavily. Vital Villa In The Latest 442

Vital Villa asked yesterday, in between the Villa v Odense predictions poll and the man of match polls, the crucial question, Red lorry or blue lorry?!?! Unsure...! (41%) Red (34%) Blue (20%) Yam gorra laff.

Right back, left back etc. etc., Martin increasingly has his work cut out. GB to stay? Clearly Liverpool did have the money, whether they do now after the Robbie Keane signing is open to debate. I suspect they do, but its whether or not they want to spend it I guess.
