Villa Confirm Friedel Talks

Aston Villa have confirmed that they have been given permission to speak to Blackburn Rovers and former USA International goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

Rumours have bounced around for weeks that Martin O`Neill was interested in signing the 37-year-old, and Brad`s relationship with the club may stretch into financial and contact-based-help for the keepers dream of starting Beckham-esque football (soccer) academies within the United States.

A statement on avfc.co.uk reads:

'Villa have been given permission to open talks with goalkeeper Brad Friedel.
Martin O'Neill this afternoon confirmed Barclays Premier League rivals Blackburn Rovers have given the green-light to talks with the US international.

The Villa boss told www.avfc.co.uk: "We've been given permission to talk to the player and that's something that we want to do. But there are still lots of things to happen.

"We're in the process of strengthening the squad and this is all part of our efforts to add strength in depth."

Crikey MON confirming a target in the transfer window, I wonder if he is feeling alright with him usually coming out to deny them!
Tez86
When he says 'But there are still lots of things to happen.' Is he referring to other targets or does he mean we're still quite a way off signing Friedel?
Villan-in-Cyprus
I assume he means Brad to pass a medical at Villa, then agree terms.

The whispers I've seen from what could be considered semi-reliable sources, Blackburn have Paul Robinson in the building, and should he pass medical/terms, then Friedel is free to leave Ewood Park.
murph
And I believe there is a zimmer-supply shop on the Hagley Road. Sorted!
Saurat
Well from my reckoning MON has about 3 hours to get him signed so he can play 2moro, anyone think MON can move quickly enough lol...!
Tez86
He was one of the most consistent performers in the Prem last season and at 37 he still has agood few years left in him. Plus he will be an excellent role model for Guzan when he joins..USA..SUA...ASU....ahhh wotever..Gooooooo Brad!! (sorry, surrounded by Yanks, their razmataz is starting to rub off on me...i need a shower!!)
Kuffit
"Oh right Kuffit, high five!" No I can't imagine MON moving quick enough. I reckon he uses a Stena Stairlift. Looks like we'll have Stu Taylor again :O Don't let us down Stuie!!!
Villan-in-Cyprus
What do you mean "looks like we'll have Taylor again"? The common belief is that for anyone to play tomorrow they had to be signed by last Thursday.
Silent-Bob
5:15pm?
tarzan
I have read about a 5:15 pm deadline. Is this legit? because theres a lot of conflicting reports
ThirtyOne
That's what I originally thought Silent-Bob. But when I mentioned that last week a couple of people corrected me and said the deadline is 24hrs before each game. Now I don't know. I'm confused:(
Villan-in-Cyprus
Doesnt MON go round the houses to simply say - we are in talks with Brad. Whats all this, we can have talks and that is something we want to do but there is lots still to do blah blah *****? Just give us a straight answer MON.
young_jonah
Lol its not worth arguing/worrying about its not going to happen anyway, h needs a medical Robbo needs to put pen to paper at Ewood as well.
Tez86
And here was me thinking Friedel had been shown around Bodymoor Last week.......did no one talk to him then ? Was he actually spoken with? How do we know he wants to come if no one has spoken with him? Is this to make sure we are not guilty of "tapping up" are is everything done through agents and middle men. Confused? I am!
fatloser
There are indeed procedures to follow, fatloser, and as a responsible club (unlike some others!) we should follow them. I don't think for one second that (a) MON isn't moving just as fast as legally possible and (b) that AVFC are not doing everything possible to get BF on board the minute they can. There are three parties involved (I don't count agents as 'parties') - BF, AVFC and BRFC, along with masses of legal and medical stuff. I can't imagine any player or club signing until their legal advisers have been over the contract with a fine tooth comb. I wouldn't!!
BobTheBuilder
as far as I understand it, Friedel will be signing for villa when robbo signs for blackburn.
romanianvillain
Looking at comments above - Tez86 "Villa have to wait for Friedel until Robbo is at Blackburn". Now seems like a good idea to have someone in place before you let players go....Now, is just me, or do Villa seem to have got this the wrong way round...sell first, then try like buggery to get a replacement....
Kuffit
No, you've hit the claret and blue nail very fairly and squarely on the head Kuffit. We like to make it tough for ourselves. Make sure that our rivals are prospering, buying our players to improve their set-ups, meanwhile leaving ourselves with everything to do to get ourselves back on track. Its the Villa way.
glensider
Having said that, get this deal signed and sealed, and what a good piece of business it will have been by MON. We've waited a while for a quality keeper, certainly putting up with some let downs in the intervening years.
glensider
Blackburn have confirmed the signing of the flying pig - Paul Robinson!!!
Sali Salifooooou
have we signed anybody yet? No? Right then, i'm going to the pub.....
tonybrum
Robbo has signed for Blackburn now, expect the official signing of Brad F to be announced shortly.
young_jonah
Brad is a great keeper, and in a year or two we then sign Boruc.
chris the villan
Brad Friedel is a top keeper in my opinion. Obviously he's not going to be a long term option but he'll do well for you for a season or two.
