'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Friday Villa Press Talk.... Shhhhhhhh!

The rumours have all but dried up, maybe now the rumours will end and the real action will start.

The press are all over the goalkeeper stories today, they all claim that Blackburn Rovers are about to sign Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson which will give the green light for Villa to make the move for Brad Friedel. Chairman John Williams has again been quoted, this time he said: 'We have made good progress with our bid, but there are still some details to sort out.'

Apart from that, I can only see the story that Villa are trying to hijack the Sunderland move for Spurs defender Younes Kaboul. The 22-year-olds agent had said that Kaboul wouldn't be interested in the move even if there was an earthquake (or something as equally ridiculous) but since then the press have been suggesting he was about to move to the Stadium Of Light. The report I have seen today states: 'PA Sport understands Villa tabled an undisclosed offer for the Tottenham man at the 11th hour with the Morocco-born player due to head for Wearside for a medical today. Kaboul has now asked the Black Cats for more time, and Keane will have to keep his fingers crossed as he looks to land his second new signing this week.'

The rest of the press talk today centres on Craig Gardner saying he can fill the right-back void and the obvious statements being picked apart by Martin O'Neill yesterday about there still being a place for Gareth Barry and that Villa would still like him to stay.

I have a source close to Villa and his cat told me yesterday that Villa are definitely set to sign at least two to three players within the next 12 months. Folks, you heard it here first, Vital Villa, always with our ears to the ground, mostly because people keep pushing us over.

PLEASE Martin PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE will you get us a RIGHTBACK? I for one, will be seriously seriously seriously p issed off if we start the season without this position filled. It is quite frankly, unacceptable. No excuses. No IF's. No BUT's. No MAYBE's. Get them in and get it sorted. NOW.
Villan-in-Cyprus
Gardner is an ok player on the wing or midfiled but at right back he looks out of sorts... we need somebody and fast.. can kaboul play RB..??
smokey_jnr
Heather Mills would do a better job at RB than Gardner
Silent-Bob
2 ****ing years without a right back. It's not good enough. I can't take anymore of this "We're hoping to try and improve the team" crap. FFSAKE we're a Premier League club, there is no excuse. If his targets are unavailable then bring in someone else, there are hundreds of natural right backs!!! Even a mediocre one from the championship would be better than playing Gardner or NRC out of position. I don't understand what the problem is.
Villan-in-Cyprus
Am alone in preferring Robinson over Friedel?
olafthegreat
Have we even had a recognised right back since Delaney left? We had that chappie on loan and Olaf the hairy (God bless him) but no-one recognised and on the books. Grrrrrrrr. BLEEDIN' SIGN SOMEONE! Can we at least cover the 6-8 losses since the end of the season when even then we had low numbers. It just doesn't make sense to me. At least (God forgive me for saying this) with Doug we knew we weren't making signings coz he was tight! I'm sorry, i'll chill out in a minute, just part of the emotianal merrygoround that is being a Villa fan :o)
mtones
olafthegreat Erm No
neilav182
I agree with Cyprus. And can't spell. How comes we are missing out on the good players to clubs like Sunderland and Blackburn?!?!? Crazy.
mtones
Because we don't have any money to buy players with!
lukemarson
I disagree, I think there's giant war chest but MON is too much of a .perfectionest that if he can't have his exact target he'd rather go without. I'd be happier if we brought in some average Joe Bloggs on a 12 month contract with no risk involved than no one at all!
Villan-in-Cyprus
Lukemarson, thats an interesting claim. When you consider the General and MON himself have both stated that there is money available plus all the work that has gone on around and to the stadium since Mr Lerner took charge.
young_jonah
I've said it before...but if we can find Salifou from the Swiss 2nd division, how can we not get a RB from somewhere. Loving the Heather Mills comment Bob, classic.
Mayo_12
Heather Mills is certainly more scary than Gardner shes a psycho! We miss out on target because its not MONS stong point. I honestly think our scouting network(if we have one!) is not that good. We only ever seem to be lionked with other premiership teams players, also I think MON is ver slow to act and will not spend over a pound more than he values any player which could be why we pulled out of the Bentley race.
Tez86
I'm sorry but MON is not above critisism. If the necessary transfers are not brought in, i'll be laying the blame firmly at his door. Not the chairman's.
Villan-in-Cyprus
**criticism**
Villan-in-Cyprus
Villan-in-Cyprus: Don't be so impatient, MON has only known since the start of LAST season that we needed a right back, give the bloke a chance, Jeez.
jonah
Yes sorry jonah, I forgot how many years it takes to bring in a right back. If on 31st August, this position is not filled and we do not have a substantial number of first team players, i'll be wanting some answers from Martin O' Neill. Has anyone told him that it's 2008?
Villan-in-Cyprus
3.5 million for Robbo...sounds good. 2 million for Friedel??? We'll get like, what, a couple of seasons out of him?
olafthegreat
The RB situation should have been sussed out during the course of last season, and a new player signed, sealed and delivered within days of this window opening.
jonah
Yeah but hopefully a couple of great seasons, and a much more impressive goal difference +++++++
Villan-in-Cyprus
Just seen an article on bbc sport, with scott carson apparently saying GB would be 'best served' with a move to liverpool! rich coming from someone who couldn't wait to leave there, and doesn't it just smack of sour grapes after we never took him permanently?
behind the dugout
No wonder other clubs don't take us seriously. We're always trying to patch up holes with bits and bobs we have lying about. Even small heath have a rb.
Villan-in-Cyprus
Carson is just bitter because we wouldn't pay the asking price. Obviously he hasn't noticed that he is sh it.
Villan-in-Cyprus
Hasnt anyone heard we NEED to be in UEFA to get a RB from anywhere, even if they are in lower divisions or abroad, a top 6 premiership team is just not that much of a step up...!
Tez86
lol Tez86
Villan-in-Cyprus
He knew he wasnt worth 10mil I qwould have took him for 3.5mil tbh
Tez86
I'm with jonah. Wait and see. There's still over 5 weeks of the transfer window left. Its only really getting stated now. Some teams haven't made any transfers yet (have everton signed anyone?), and we're getting bodies in. It looks like we're by far the most active in buying. By next week hopefully we'll have 2 keepers, sidwell and maybe kaboul. As for the players we lost, sorenson, berger and moore didn't play any significant part in last seasons campaign so they are hardly losses. I'm sure MON has his targets but they may be contracted players and so he can't comment on them. I wouldn't want him to anyway. Why alert other teams of the possible availability of our targets? The signings will come but in the mean time guys chill, just chill.
tonybrum
Serious question. Do we have trouble attracting big names because Birmingham is'nt seen to be as glamerous as London, Manchester and even Liverpool (which is currently european city of culture)?
Mister Mick
And then when we beat Odense, MON will say "Ideally, if we can get through the 3rd qualifying round of the UEFA Cup to the group stages, we'll have a much better chance of attracting the sort of quality we need to take this club forward. Then hopefully we could maybe start thinking about improving the team."
Villan-in-Cyprus
We have the Bull Ring:)
Villan-in-Cyprus
i'm staying out of this one Mister Mick, I moved from Brum to London bloody years ago!
tonybrum
Why setlle for an average RB, lets just win the UEFA cup without one and then we can get a world class one! Oh and lets break top 4 also to get the pull of Champions League.
Tez86
I agree Tez86, as you said yesterday, right backs are overrated anyway. Maybe Martin O' Neill just doesn't like RB's???
Villan-in-Cyprus
i moved to leeds from brum in feb and iv had the best 5 months of my life for a long long time, i used to think i loved brum till i left (its a sad shame i know) but any whoo villan-in-cyprus i love the bull ring (partly because i was contracted to put the roof on it :)
Astonian Villan
Maybe the mystery RB (Miguel??) has only agreed to join when we qualify for UEFA. If one of the Top 4 had won FA Cup & Carling Cup, then we would of auto qualified and had our RB already. All players MON has brought in so far (incl last season) have been good additions plus there is a good crop of youngsters coming through. Look at Manure all those seasons ago when Giggs, Scholes, Beckham & the Chuckle Bro's broke into the team, they went onto big things. MON knows what he is doing - it takes time!!
Mutley73
Very true V-i-C they are overrated, Big Marlon can play RB...remember his tackle at White Hart Lane thats the commitment you want when going into challenges. We will see Laursen up front before the end of the season because he scores alot of headers....we dont need to buy anyone boys just shuffle the team and be unpredictable!
Tez86
ha ha that would be unpredictable Tez86. Yeah that was certainly a whole hearted tackle from Marls, but i'm sure it was at that point we let in 3 goals in about 3 minutes? Astonian Villan, so it was you who put the roof on?? I hate to be the one to tell you this, but it's crooked and sort of slopes to one side.
Villan-in-Cyprus
H
Tez86
H?
Villan-in-Cyprus
He gave away a penalty, looked as if he tried to climb on top of the foward... I'm glad we can have laugh Cyprus is helping get through this depressing transfer window lol
Tez86
Whoops not sure what happened there...fat fingers I guess!
Tez86
Ahh right, I though 'H' was some sort of enigma code. Yes, we must keep laughing, it's important to keep up morale:D I reckon the suicide rate will be going up in Birmingham this year. What with our 'transfer' window and the sh it being relegated AGAIN. Not to mention the tax increase on beer, you can't even drown your sorrows anymore! God bless cheap Cypriot 'Keo' beer.
Villan-in-Cyprus
I love craig.
PTP
He's not really my type PTP. He's a typically commited Villa fan though. Gardner is happy to play RB because that's the most likely way he'll get in the team. Can't say I blame him, but no - i'd prefer an actual right back please . . .
Villan-in-Cyprus
Future Villa captain is Craig, he needs to play in the centre of the park though!
Tez86
I'm loving the shuffling of the squad idea, that could be a mastercalss. We've all seen how great Big John is in the slide tackle :D I work with Craig Gardners cousin and he has said to me numerous times that Craigs told O'Neill he doesn't wanna play at RB.Oh...waitwaitwait, I forgot, his cousin is a used car salesman though, so therefore prone to talking out of his ar se.
Mayo_12
*No offence intended to any other used car sales people on here*
Mayo_12
Craig is lovely, obviously I'd rather have a propper right back. Right back right back. just one or two. Craigs a Central midfielder though and when he gets his run of games there he's gonna eclipse Barry's meaning to this club. The Villa fan, that can play. Remember that goal? Bolton I think it was, ooooooohh. Just perfect.
PTP
He wouldn't leave us would he? Ahh he probably will eventually, that will be a sad, sad day.
PTP
Gardners ok as a back-up to a back-up RB, but he really isn't the kind of RB a club pushing for the top 4 needs!!! Anyway, good news that we're gonna be signing 2 or 3 more players in the next 12 months! lol
romanianvillain
'Signing two or three players in the next 12 months' *subnote: while five others leave, lol...
Mayo_12
The rumours have all but dried up. Where's Eircol when you need him, the man who proves, if proof were ever needed, that bull***** baffles brains.
glensider
According to a business collegue I deal with who is involved with work at Bodymoor Heath...after speaking this morning just after he left bodymoor heath the rumours there are that SWP could be an incoming signing. I hate that kind of statement because I always wonder if its bull**** if someone else says it, but thought you might be interested all the same about a funky rumour!
Villa4Europe
Great news we will eventually sign 2 or 3 players, have the media liked them to us 100 time already!!!! friedel who now should be confirmed and be at the game on sat hopefully and i'm open minded on kaboul, is really that good, i'm sure MON can get the better out of him. does that mean a fututre partnership at CB with Davis and Kaboul and laursen moving to RB before he moves on!!!!
pksandell
I would take friedal over robinson hands down. I would love to have a quality english keeper but then i would prefer to have the best available. Friedal is first rate. one of ther best keepers in the league. can't say the same for robinson
UTV
it seems man city are in for friedal, i can see it now he changes his mind and goes to city and robinson moves to blackburn, and once again we're in the *****!
eltoro
*Friedel
eltoro
I thought they started destroying Birmingham when they knocked down all the old, empty, decaying, yet somehow eerliy and hauntingly monolithic factories I'd traverse coming into Brum on the train from Lichfield... I liked the old Bullring & Rag Market better. And where have all the great record shops gone?
