Uefa Critical To Villa Attracting Top Names

Martin O'Neill has indicated just how crucial the Intertoto Cup games against Odense BK at Villa Park on Saturday is by stressing how much easier it will be for him to attract the right players to Villa if we are in the UEFA Cup.

Our last poll asked 'what are Villa most likely to make most of their signings' and 59% agreed with the Villa boss saying once Uefa qualification is confirmed. So there, we aren't just pretty faces us lot are we?!

O'Neill told the official site: 'I think that players, particularly players coming from abroad, want to play in the Premier League and there's only so many teams who can be in Europe each year. But if we could say to prospective signings that we were in the UEFA Cup it certainly wouldn't hinder our chances.'

He also says he is looking forward to the game and thinks the 2-2 draw gave the Villa a great chance adding, 'This is what we played for all last season. We finished sixth in the league and normally that would be good enough to go into the UEFA Cup automatically. It wasn't and we ended up taking this route, so we have to get on with it.'

Full poll results:

When are Villa most likely to make most of their signings? (Suggested by: pksandell)

Once Uefa qualification is confirmed (59%)
Just before the transfer window closes (28%)
Within the next 2 weeks (7%)
After the start of the season (6%)

Our latest poll asks if you think we'll win, lose or draw (but still go through on away goals) or draw (and go out on away goals) v Odense BK.

Just so much is weighing on this one match isn't there? We've lost some good players not yet replaced, we're not in terrific form... Just nerve racking isn't it?

Forgive the cynicism but it could be looked at as a pre prepared excuse for no exciting signings. I really must lighten up and become optimistic.

Even though I'm confident about tomorrow, I think we've gambled far too much with this game by having so few positions unfilled and un-backed-up. Still, we win it, and then maybe, just maybe, we'll see a quick influx of quality signings. Please!!!!!

So, according to St Mart, its see off Odense tomorrow, and we can expect the influx of signings that we've been working on for the last few weeks, whereas lose tomorrow, and the status quo remains. I am not holding my breath for the former, even though I expect to see us progress through this Inter-Toto tie.
