Blackburn Fans 'Gutted' At Brad Friedel Departure

Blackburn Fans 'Gutted' At Brad Friedel Departure

1) As a fans favourite, are you surprised that Brad Friedel appears to be Villa bound?

I was gutted when I heard news that he had requested to leave Rovers, couldn't believe it as I didn't see it coming at all. Having said that as soon as Paul Ince took over there was speculation that Ince was “looking at other goalkeepers”. I'm not surprised now, but at first I was maybe surprised that Aston Villa would be his destination, as if he went anywhere I thought it would be to work with Mark Hughes again at Manchester City, but he will be the undisputed number one at Villa Park.

2) Do you think he'll regret moving from the club where he appears to be worshipped by the fans or was it time for him to go?

Definitely NOT time for him to go!!! He still has a good two or three-years left in him yet. Villa fans probably do not appreciate just how good he is, so for his sake I hope he doesn't see things go wrong. But I feel you'll see the best of him as we have anyway.

3) What is the fans reaction to not only his departure but also the fact he apparently said he wanted to leave and put in a transfer request?

We were shocked, most, like myself were gutted!!! But maybe there was more to the talk that Ince was looking at other goalkeepers than at first appeared?!?! David Bentley going was always likely to happen, but the only time we really thought Brad would leave Rovers would be when he retired.

4) What reception will he get if he does return to Ewood Park this season in a Villa shirt?

He'll get a superb reception, as he's been a great servant to the club. If ANYONE gave him a bad reception I would expect them to be shown the door by those around them!!!

5) Who do you expect will replace him at Rovers?

I'd not mind Jason Brown given a crack, people will say he isn't ready for it but he is a Welsh International and isn't exactly a youngster, not that he's old either. If he doesn't get a chance now I don't think he ever will with Rovers. However, despite the criticism he gets I think Paul Robinson is a very good goalkeeper and will become our new goalkeeper. A move to Ewood would rejuvenate his career so I think it will probably be him as part of the David Bentley to Tottenham Hotspur deal.

6) In a nutshell, what are we getting, a top keeper who'll do a great job or an old keeper looking for one final pay day?

You're getting a great goalkeeper who I personally believe is ONLY bettered by Petr Cech in the Premier League (although others on Vital Blackburn disagree, they think he is better than Cech!)

Good luck Bradders, I (and ALL Rovers fans) are gutted you're going but we wish you well.

With thanks to Walker from Vital Blackburn

I must say that the Blackburn fans here have shown themselfs to be proper good fans, I have not seen 1 insult of Brad or Villa, not 1 boo or remark of Judas, It shows that real fans do show the same loyalty and support to the players that they demand from the players. Blackburn must have the 2nd best fans in the PL (behind Villa of course). Well done Blackburn fans and good luck this season. And dont worry Brad will be as well looked after by us Villa fans as he was by you.

He will certainly be appreciated by the Villa faithfull, simdohquo. The main reason we want Brad instead of Robinson is that Robo is very much low on confidence. Very similar to what Carson was suffering from last season. Although both of these would be a better long term solution as they will get better, Scott was making far too many mistakes. Bottom line is, we need someone who can do the job today, not in 2 seasons time. For that, Brad is the man. And we should have the young american, Brad Guzan, as his understudy. Hope that answered your question. He'll be well looked after. Good luck for next season.

1) I'm glad Brad is going somewhere where he'll be appreciated by real footie fans. He has been a great servant for our club and hopefully he'll get a good reception on his return. He will be missed. 2) However, why has MO'N gone for Brad when he could have got the younger Robinson? Skillwise they are probably on a level. Robbo has always played well at Ewood, even when in the middle of a "slump" in form. Brad has made soem mistakes recently... and to be honest, I think we have had the bets of him.

From what Walker says, it must be one hell of a wrench for Friedel to decide to move away from Ewood Park. When supporters rate you so very highly, you're really in a comfort zone I expect.

Brads a brilliant keeper........stats shown on SSN seem to suggest that his age will not be a problem. Hope the deal gets done quick though.

"Were gonna score one more than you" Get some cricket scores on the go, I have to say I did enjoy the 4-4s last year if we had a complete defense that mighjt not have happened.
24/07/2008 15:42:00
Absolutely, who needs defenders? Seeing as attack is the best form of defence, I think it would be beneficial to scrap all the midfielders, our 1 goal keeper and our 2 defenders and just play 11 strikers. The opposition wouldn't know what had hit them.

You and me are on the same page Villan-in-Cyprus the rest of the football world dont know how to conduct business. My mate is a Norwich City fan they got rid of about 9 players at the end of the season and much like us they have very little defenders...I did the right thing took after MON and told him defenders are overrated anyway your much better with centre midfielders as full backs, who needs a right back anyway!
24/07/2008 13:40:00
We'll give him a good home Walker, have no fears about that. Good piece of business by MON me thinks. Looks like we might just have ourselves a decent keeper at Villa Park again.
24/07/2008 12:27:00
If we had him last summer, we could quite realistically be talking about playing Barcelona this season, instead of Odense.
