Blackburn To Lose Friedel

Blackburn have accepted an offer believed to be around 2 million from Villa for goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

It seems the educated guesses on why Martin O'Neill turned up late to the Walsall friendly may have been correct, with whispers saying he was meeting the American goalkeeper at Bodymoor Heath during the first half.

But this news will come as a shock to Blackburn fans who were under the impression the experienced Friedel (how else do you describe a 37 year old) would not be allowed to leave until a suitable replacement was found.

This puts the speculation linking Paul Robinson with us to bed, but opens the door for the former England No 1 to join Blackburn as the replacement.

There's no doubts who gets the better goalkeeper here in my mind, the age is an issue BUT with Guzan likely to be coming in, Friedel will serve as an excellent tutor for the other American goalkeeper.

The deal is believed to be 2 million upfront with a further 500,000 to be paid based on appearances.

The Blackburn Rovers OS states that a bid has been accepted but Villa aren't mentioned (not saying it isn't us) but then goes on to say, "The transfer is conditional on Rovers having a bid for a goalkeeper at another club accepted."

Despite being him being 52 I think this is a good capture for us. He's an experienced GK who will definately control his area, something all of our recent GKs didn't do. If he tutors Guzan into the Premiership fold aswell alls good, not many better people out there to teach you the ropes. One down, seven more signings to go :)

im happy enough with this, who knows a right back next. but seriously i do trust martin but i can get a little frustrating, it is nice to have a manager with the clubs best interests at heart and i understand his transfer policy...i think its just hard when i check about 10 times a day to see if we have signed anyone, makes for a long day.

Finally some good news in the transfer market. Agree with Mayo_12 Friedel "will definately control his area, something all of our recent GKs didn't do". Was watching the season review dvd and cant help thinking Carson should have done better on a lot more goals than i remembered. UTV

Just a shame we can't use him Saturday!!! I always thought Taylor deserved a chance until I saw his pathetic flap at a cross last weekend, hopefully he will be back to his self this weekend with the home crowd behind him!

Great news! My first choice keeper. More like this and all the stress and frustration will have been worth it. I do hope blackburn find a replacement and sharpish, don't want the wheels to fall off this thing.

Pleased with this, always looks a top keeper whenever i've seen him play, and it should rub off on the defence, knowing if they do make a gaffe (zat) that it's not going to be easy to get past our keeper. similar to Schmeichel in one on one situations, doesn't commit too early and make it easy for the opposing striker to score, they always have to work for it. Proven at this level for a number of years is also a major plus point.

One waiting for workpremit one waiting till his team get a new keeper. will one of them behere to start the season. let face it if blackburn take as long as we have to find a RB then we will get him when he as no hair atall

He will be a good addition to the team, he is so sound in all aspects of his job. Now when are we going to get those right sided players, particularly at least one RB and a winger and then the good central defender we badly need until Davies is back.

kind of a weird signing due to his age. friedel is still an excellent keeper, though. i'd give him another three years, which would surely be worth the expense.

The fact that he is 37 doesn't matter; he's fit and more than capable. Good business at 2 mil.

What a great keeper. What a great guy. Worth 15 points per season to any team. Probably Rovers best-ever signing. What a sad day for my team. If he were 10 years younger, money wouldn't buy him. Good luck Brad. All the best.

An excellent piece of business by MON, if we can indeed wrap this deal up. Arguably one of the top three keepers in the premiership last season, a model of consistency, we certainly couldn't have landed much better. If I were a Rovers fan, I'd be bitterly disappointed at losing Brad Friedel, while picking up Paul Robinson as a replacement.

So thats hopefully one problem position sorted, now MON can turn his immediate attention to resolving our other issues, certainly continuing to address our leaky defence.
