'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Bentley Wanted By 21% & Would Cost A Packet!

According to the Daily Mail, amongst other reports, Blackburn would sell their winger David Bentley but only for a top price.

Rovers club chairman John Williams said of the 23-year-old England midfielder:

'We have received two bids but neither have come anywhere close to our valuation which is based in line with how we see the market. We don't want to lose David but if we do get a bid that meets our valuation then ultimately it comes down to a football decision by Paul. David is one year into a four-year contract but he told us when Mark Hughes was here that he wanted a move so this doesn't come as a shock to us.'

It has been confirmed that Villa made a bid and is thought that Spurs are the other team interested. It has also been rumoured that Bentley is only interested in a London move, so it might not matter what we bid!

Whilst on the subject, our last poll, suggested by John.Carews.Crew, asked:

Which winger would you like to see at Villa Park?

Chelsea's Shaun Wright-Phillips came out top with 34%
David Bentley was next up with 21% closely followed by the option to give Maloney a chance, at 18%

That left 14% wanting Newcastle midfielder James Milner, 10% wanting our very own Wayne Routledge a go and just 3% for Spurs winger Aaron Lennon. Love votes for him possibly to do with the fact he shaves his eyebrow in that silly way... or is that just me?!

Wonder if the outcome would have been any different, if M'ON was still after Bentley!
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
but why the hell is he not still after bentley? make one bid and then leave it?? there is no way on earth we would get him for only 10m.
ric112
10mill does seem a silly bid in today's climate. Last year he was prepared to pay 10mill (or thereabouts) for three unproven young players - Young, Davies and Carson. Perhaps 10mill is Lerner's spending limit for transfers ? eh-ho wait for the rebuttal from the "General" again!
villacross
I'd rather have SWP if Harry doesn't nab him for Portsmouth first. He'll be a hell of a lot cheaper and maybe we could afford a right back then too.
tonybrum
I dont rate SWP, I cant see what all the fuss about him is. He is quick but his final ball isnt all that and he hasnt played much football in the last 2 years. I would easily prefer Milner or Bentley both are younger players and are at times easily the best players at thier current club. Can I just add I saw the goals from Pompys friendly on Sky sports this morning Defoe and Crouch look very sharp and I think they will work well together, it could be something we have missed out on...
Tez86
The press said 10m, that was NOT the bid we put in. Some were saying 12m as well.
The Fear
Did nobody see the part saying 'he only wants to go to a London club'? I doubt it would metter what we paid for him, he doesn't want to come to sunny Brummieland...I'm all for Milner, get him back at Villa Park MON.
Mayo_12
Tez- I'd leave the Defoe thing in the past. Some players just don't wan't the bright lights of the Bull ring I'm afraid. I'm disappointed that we weren't in for Yakubu and Hutton, but life isn't that straight forward in todays football.
tarzan
It seems that any potential to get Bentley has gone, and as second choice I'd take Lennon, I love his trickery and just think that MON could turn him into a fantastic top player!!
romanianvillain
We've got near enough a clone of Lennon in the Rout. If he keeps his confidence up he could be the key to our RW problem if we don't buy anyone.
Mayo_12
I don't recall being so impressed with Wright-Phillips crossing or shooting over the last couple of years. I thought Bentley looked better for England. I am worried that both of them are more interested in money than being good team members. But can Maloney or Routledge come good - only MON knows I suspect.
Winsforvilla
18m seems steep for Bentley. That's 2 Ashley Youngs! There must be better value out there. I'd like to see Routledge given a chance or even half a chance. But saying that we'd probably get to september when I'd be kicking myself that we hadn't bought Bentley. Not convinced about Lennon though, think he's a bit of a speedy one trick poney. And hasn't he said he wants to stay at spurs?
tonybrum
I'd have David Bentley over little Shaun Wright-Phillips any day of the week. I still think that out of the three I'd prefer James Milner, but I've come to terms with the fact that we have very little chance of landing any of them. Very disillusioned right now over our lack of transfer dealings. Looks to me very much a case of same old, same old.
glensider
Routledge has been unlucky so far this pre-season. Our best player on the night at Lincoln, left on the bench in Denmark. I'd have given him another outing against Odense. We're never going to see just what this lad might be capable of.
glensider
glensider spot on, give him a start from the whistle and let the manager tell him to take his chance. Jesus the bloke must be dying to run out onto the pitch to start a game.

MON need to show more balls in the transfer market, never mind he thinks players are too pricey or their wages too high, every one else plays the piper time Villa stepped up to the plate and showed some ambition.
