'If It's Football, It's Vital'

O'Neill Says Intertoto Set Up Nicely For Villa

Martin O'Neill said after the 2-2 draw in the Inter that the result sets Villa up for next week at home.

The Villa boss told the official site:

'We've drawn the game and scored two goals away from home. Considering the circumstances I'm reasonably satisfied. By the time we play them again next week we should be much fitter.'

Yup, another week of training and a few new arrivals and off we go!

He added, that he felt we started well and the own goal by new boy Steve Sidwell was unavoidable and admitted Villa started to look tired in the second half adding:

'It was just disappointing that we conceded so late in the game. But it's all set up now for Villa Park next week. I would expect that by this time next week we'd be much, much fitter again and that's important. We've been at it for just over a fortnight now and it was so important for us tonight to stay in the competition. We've scored the two goals and we'll be better for next week.'

What a great bunch of lads MON is
I AM IN ENGLAND FOR A MONTH and I'm going to the second leg at Villa Park to sing my heart out for the lads. Therefore we will win. Not impressed with tonight's performance but we are not looking match fit, and we missed Barry, dare I say it. It looks like the writing's on the wall for the new regime - spend now or face the consequences. We have no chance of repeating 6th place let alone pushing on based on what we've seen tonight.
Our first competitive game of the new season and we didnt perform very well and people will question the teams ability for next season. Lets just wait and see how things develop come the Man City game!
What circumstances should we be considering?
Its early in the season yet, the lads aren't up and running things will be fine, there was glimps's of the Villa of last season in ashley, laursen, carew and the dangerous set plays. Thats not a bad result tonight considering. I'm looking forward to Saturday. come on the lads.
Yea the lads need time to get into the mix of things again. Come next Saturday and i expect to see a different attitude from the players and a different game to what we witnessed today!
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW look at Laursen face its the funniest I've ever seen
It takes a while for all the new players to settle into the side :-(
"Yup, another week of training and a few new arrivals and off we go!" Comedy aint your strong point Fear :-)
jonah LOL, thats so funny
Great picture!
I do my best jonah! lol. Must admit the prepared photo I use for the transfer rumours is starting to look a bit sarcastic as well !
The Fear
at least we have the two away goals, they weren't fit but will be fitter next week, should see us through nicely and at the end of the day (great football phrase!) it is only the result that matters!
The Fear
Why do you all want new signings? they only score own goals anyway!!
I for one am happy with 2-2 result away from home in a competive match with less than 100% players...........stop your whining and cheer on the boys......
100% fit
Knight isn't going to get any better, neither is Nige's (the winger?)passing, Sidwell can only pass back or sideways and we have already got Petrov for that job. Gabby was the biggest disappointment for me. He still just runs in a straight line and without that extra yard of pace, he has no tricks and is an average player at best. Sidwell can get much better but the others mentioned are just squad players and we need some consistent quality. Hopefully we will scrape through and buy 10 decent players. It can get a lot better than this, we made the Djemba twins look good.
Good picture sdler82! Well I hope that was the short sharp shock we were talking about yesterday and that there aren't anymore to come. Unless we bring in some decent players this week, I think we should play defensively in the 2nd leg and protect our away goal advantage. When you're as bare at the back as we are, attack is not the best form of defence. Stopping them from scoring must be our priority, we'll catch them on the counter and use our deadly free kicks to increase the defecit. 2-0 win at VP (4-2 Agg).
Villan444. Saying Sidwell can only pass side ways is ridiculous. Is this on the back of his 1 game for villa? Do you think perhaps on a competitive debut he was more inclined to try fit into the team? When he signed someone posted a link of a couple of nice threaded through balls which put through Lita for Reading goals. Check them out. Presumably Sidwell will settle better at villa if fans show some patience instead of placing too much pressure on him too soon. Also zero chance of us signing 10 players. Great pic of Laursen in the Guardian sdler82.
I agree dont get on sidwells back, we should cherish him he is after all our one and only signing I think because of that we expect too much from him, He did ok and I think long term he'll be a legend for us.
Sidwell be prove to be a tremendous acquisition, no doubt about that. A few more like him and we wont be in too bad a shape.
Wonder if Eric Djemba-Djemba will be greeted by the odd dissenting voice when he takes to the field next Saturday?
Sidwell is a good player & will get better with time.
I have no real worries about Sidwell, I think he is a fntastic signign, and I just hope we see more of his calibre coming on board over the next few weeks.
