'Get Over The Bentley Bid - It's Over'

AstonBurrito has been discussing the David Bentley situation in our forum thread: Click Here and following the quotes from Martin O'Neill confirming we had a bid rejected and he is now moving on to other targets, the Vital Villan member said:

You me, and the rest of the Villa faithful have to let it go it's over.

It is true that we need players, and we need players on the right hand side of the pitch, there is absolutely no dispute about that.

There is no questioning Bentley's ability, he came to the fore last year and is an outstanding talent in the game, still with potential to develop. I really think the fact that Spurs have come in with a low bid though signals the crux of the situation, and that is that he has a preference to go there, as there seems to be no interest in him from the top 4.

How much would we have had to pay for Bentley in a real world? £15m, £20m? No one knows what the offer was on the table, but i'm sure it was substantial, but if the player does not want to join, then there is nothing that can be done.

What we do know is that players who join Villa do so because MON doesn't pursue players who have an agenda to fulfil outside of football. He could well have seen something in Bentley which has made him believe that he's not suitable for the club or the dressing room, and certainly not worth the £17m that it would take to bring him here.

There is also a myth that MON is not willing to pay over the odds, despite the fact that he did so (admitting it himself) for both Ashley Young and Curtis Davis. But I also remember him commenting on both players attitudes to the game, praising them for this aspect of this, and that is more the reason why he chose to go the extra mile and sign them.

If a players heart is not in the club 100% i'm sorry, but I wouldn't want us to spunk £20m on them just to prove a point or make a statement to the rest of the league. In the long term policies like that serve no purpose whatsoever to the club, and it's just a pointless route to go down.

I also think this situation has been made worse with the several purported 'in the knows' who have added fuel to the fire with no substance or evidence whatsoever, and to be fair it's not just Eircol who has done that, I think every Villa site has one person who claims to have had insider knowledge on this 'deal' and all of them have been exposed as complete muppets.

So in short, there is no interest in Bentley and life goes on. There will be others though, some we will sign, and others we won't. To be completely frank, we have a massive game tomorrow, and all of the players and management should be concentrating on that rather than a player with the ego the size of Birmingham.

At Vital Villa the only person we have on the inside is the General and he knows nothing about transfers (cough splutter) Good artical dude, Bentley like Barry is not the be all and end all of Aston Villa football club.

Same thing happended with Sneijder last year and we ended up fine. We'll sign players who can do a job for us and more than likely they wont be superstars.

Good article. You could have mentioned that there is far too much hype during all of these windows and the sooner they are gone, the better. All thy do is create a false market and high prices. The growth in pathetic internet sites (not this one Fear) doesn't help either as each tries to outdo the headlines of the next one, with both simply reporting what has has been made up in the Sun.

Mon refusing to raise his offer for bentley is a good signal to other clubs who have players we may bid for. Mon certainly will not be held to ransom buying or selling and thats exactly what we need in these strange times. So many villa fans say buy bentley, boruc, miguel etc etc without realising that these players alone would probably cost 35 mill or more. sidwell for 5 mill is a bargain in this current climate so expect more bargains rather than superstars

MON has made some qood signings in these windows (young, davis, reo-coker,sidwell even harewood) but they've always been outweighed by the departures. That's the bit that has to change. All the guy's that have gone this year we all knew we're going. It's Mr Gareth Barry that has let us down this year. If he was staying and we went into the season with a Sidwell Barry midfield we'd be happy. All we'd be looking for now is a RB. Well GB is going, he's not put in a transfer request, he stabbed MON in the back and he can truly go f*** himself! But only for 18m. Tough titties Barry.

It woukld be nice if we could sign these plentiful other options sooner rather than later. I am getting ever so slightly anxious at this spoint. Hopefully thre will be a major flurry of activity over the next 2 weeks. UP THE VILLA

Good article, I totally agree Bentley either said he wanted to go to Spuds or MON didn't like him or his attitude and therefore thought he wouldn't suit our dressing room, forget bentley and barry.

I totally agree, the whingers can't accept players don't want to join over Spurs or anyone else.

I agree. Baby bentley would probably just want to leave if we didnt finish in the top 4 neway. Same old same old. SWP has to be our man if he wants to leave chelski and play regular

SWP would be a good shout, however i reckon M'ON may use the money he would have spent on Bentley on other areas which need improving, and will give Routledge his chance! I would also love Maloney to up his game, and deliver the quality football we no he can and really become a hit in the Premiership! Guess tonight we may just get to see how Routledge does as id be expecting him to be starting!

I'm so glad the Bentley deal is off. I said in previous threads that Bentley is a ponce and would love nothing more than going out on the tiles in London with all his Bling he wears! I could think of better signings for £17million quid than Bentley like a bloody RB for starters! SWP from Chelsea would be a better buy at around £10-£12Million. A big win tonight could see some signings materialise next week........players want European Villa don't F++k it up!!!!!!!!

How about instead going all out for a RW we should go for someone like Downing on the left and let Ashley move over to the right (which he'd prefer) and Routlidge as cover for him? still doesn't solve the GK, RB, CM, CB and striker issues though!! I'm still working on that one!

Now that we have pulled out of the race for bentley. I reckon it might be between SWP and James Milner to play on the right of midfield. I would choose Milner out of the two, as i think he is better than SWP. I would of even went for Milner over bentley.

We have no choice but to get over it, for one reason or another the deal is now dead in the water, but personally I cant pretend that it isn't a huge disappointment. Would question JOHN.CAREWS.CREW's comment about these plenty of other options out there. Who? Where? Newcastle are absolutely adamant that Milner is going nowhere, while if we'd have wanted SWP surely a move would have been made before now? Apart from those two, I struggle to come up with another viable alternative.
