Brad Friedel to Depart: Didn't Grow on a Tree

Blackburn Rovers Chairman John Williams admits their #1 goalkeeper didn't grow on a tree, as Brad Friedel shocks the club by requesting a transfer.

News coming from the Lancashire Telegraph suggests that despite Rovers` insistence that the former USA International is going nowhere, that the player himself now wishes to move onto pastures new, after a 7 seasons at Ewood Park.

Blackburn`s chairman admits that he has received two formal bids from clubs looking to acquire the services of a player who has undoubtedly been one of the greatest goalkeepers in the league, following his somewhat disastrous spell at Liverpool.

"We`ve had two bids for Brad, despite my insistence to the clubs concerned we didn`t want them. They`ve been rejected." John Williams told the LT.
"When Brad told us he wanted to leave, it was a bolt out of the blue - he had only signed his latest contract back in February, and a replacement keeper has not even been on our radar."

It is believed that Manchester City may well be the other club, with a two-way fight brewing between Friedel`s previous manager Mark Hughes, and the American-Connection we have steadily building at Villa Park, soon to be added to with rising American GK star Brad Guzan subject to Home Office approval.

Is Friedel set to join Guzan in becoming "AVFC Team Brad GK?" Only time will tell.

After all to quote Mr Williams: "Brad Friedel`s don`t grow on trees."

Belgium? Why would we send him to Belgium, whilst the rest of the team are in Denmark?

"Blackburn Rovers Chairman John Williams admits their #1 goalkeeper didn't grow on a tree, as Brad Friedel shocks the club by requesting a transfer. " - but not as shocked as Villa would be if GB did the same.

Blackburn fan here. This is gutting news for all at Ewood. I would hope he comes to you lot, and not Citeh.

Must admit I was hoping for Green from west spam but if Guzan turns out to be as good as MON thinks then this will be an excellent signing with Brad jnr learning his prem trade from one of the best. And anythings better than another loned GK. (still fuming at that p*** the chubby spanaird. Carson 10m to villa, peanuts and pork scratchings to anyone else. What a C**K!

I agree with the majority in saying he'll be a good capture. As long as he can keep the arthritis away for a few more years and he nurtures Guzan into his role he'll be worth the reported 2.5m. I'd be interested to know how much he's earning at Blackburn though since we're supposedly doubling his wages.....

Hopefully the United States will embrace the Aston Villa culture. God bless the United Kingdom, and God bless America. And Mr O'Neill.

Thank you for the positive comments from Decimus Poole and sasman. Indeed the deal's not done yet, but he'll be in good hands with Martin O'Neill. Arguably, Rovers have had the very best of Brad Friedel so i'm sure their supporters understand.

A player handing in a transfer request? What's that all about?? Is that what you do when you want to leave a club. I thought you went blarting to a redtop rag. Should be a good signing for us. Think I would prefer Green as well Mister Mick, more for the long term.

I would rather have Friedel than Green, he's a far more complete keeper, and if we get Gizan as his understudy, I will be a happy man - at least, happy regarding our GK situation.

I agree. I prefer Friedel anyday, he's the finished article. We need someone who can do the job tomorrow (Literally!!!) Not someone who'll take 2 years.

Would happily have Friedel teaching Guzan the ropes for a couple of years. Reading between the lines though this will drag on. Blackburn have already let Enkleman (WHO??) go and will not be keen to let Friedel go without first replacing him. As for Carson going to the yawnthorns, I think Mowbray has made his first mistake. I expected the third biggest supported club in the Black Country (Villa 1st, Dogheads 2nd) to finish nearly halfway this season. This signing will cost them as many points as he cost us and will be the difference between mid table and a relegation scrap.

Well I'd much rather have Friedel here than I ever would Carson or Robinson, but at 37 years of age its clearly a short term thing. Hopefully Guzan turns out to be the prospect MON and co believe him to be.
