The Villa Transfer Thread - Part 6

Thread six on summer transfers, so over 1800 comments so far and no signings!

Not to mention 92 pages in the forum! Click Here

I can't keep talking about being the optimist and by the end of this thread we'll have more, so I'll go all miserable and maybe that will get the players flying in!

We also have Martin Laursen, who is surely at the top of list of candidates to become Villa captain, saying he believes Martin O'Neill will bring in the right quality players for the new season. 'Obviously we need a lot of new players because we've lost a few this summer. We definitely need some quantity and a lot of quality as well. I'm sure that the manager will bring in good players, so I'm not worried about that. It would be nice to get them as soon as possible so that we can build up a team but I understand it's not that easy. We want to try and take the best players. We want quality and quality players are not easy to get and you need to work a lot for them.'

6-2 to Vital Villa boys.
evoflash
We go further ahead again after MON had pulled one back. I think this could be a rout
notthedougellisstand
Lol lets hope this is the one where MON will pull back some points to take the lead!
Tez86
BENTLEY will sign for villa if fee is agreed, please dont have ago at me yet, lets wait and see... Only want to share great news with you all.
Eircol
I'm going to ask how you know this ? Eircol. Please enlighten us.
notthedougellisstand
Wait and see all i will say is that he will sign for us if the clubs can agree money, spurs wont be an issue.
Eircol
Get Shorey he's good and available. ooh my
chris the villan
friedel, bentley a solid right back and keeping barry imo will be a sucsessful offseason in addition to the sidwell and guzman transfers, hopefully a couple of the youth players will step up and add additional depth which is well needed....terrified by the new poll question by the way, answered dont make me think about it.
1982benny
Do you have an approximate date this is likely to happen then Ericol?
Tez86
Just depends on when the fee is agreed.
Eircol
Isn't it 17m? The offer for Barry is 15m over 3 years - I reckon that's holding it up too.
tarzan
The Bentley fee signals the truth of the Lerner reign. Some say he's bought the club and is happy to patiently wait for a highly profitable offer to come in. Others (like me) believe he's the son of God, come down to make Villa holy once more. The Bentley fee will banish one of these beliefs to the chest of lies. I hope and pray we see Mr Bentley in a Villa shirt.
evoflash
The barry deal is not holding any deal up, although it would be handy.
Eircol
Sorry Eircol don't believe you on this one. Bentley won't go until the end of the window. Blackburn are holding out for the best price and a bidding war. Also Bentley wants to keep his options open.
tarzan
I did not state when he will sign, just that he would sign for us if money agreed.
Eircol
Unfortunatley that's what everyone wants to know on these threads!
tarzan
I think Eircol is right, we just need to agree and go for him, Ramos is more interested in Capel, the player stated they met a few times already!!!! just offer the cash and get him in , would be an awesome signing, really cannot believe Barry still wants to leave after all this!!!! Look at that player Bodde from Swansea, ok Smaller scale but he has appologised to all the players, Manager and FANS and signed a new contract, what are the odds on Barry doing the same? Mind you I think it will take some mighty grovelling for that to happen!!!!
erv2005
erv even tho im a Spurs fan and want Bentley to sign for Villa( £17 mil would be nice), Capel is a left sided midfielder/winger so even if we was to buy Capel , dont mean we would want Bentley as he's a right sided midfielder/winger.............good to see Eircol back afta he got the Sidwell transfer correct..............lol
Ossie
bloody obvious if you ask me. If Villa agree a fee with Blackburn then Bentley joins Villa. Hardly world-shattering inside info, especially taking into account Spurs havent even made a bid for him. Nice one Eircol. lol
romanianvillain
Ossie, if we sign Bentley, we too won't have a right left sided MF...Ash is right footed. Bring on Bentley please.
koolbill
Romanianvillain - Its not bloody obvious, just because we agree a fee does not mean he will want to join.. He could say no. I stated that he wants to come...
Eircol
we are discussing this in the forum anyway, read my final comment..
Eircol
Lets just wait till M'ON is asked about Bentley in a interview!
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
I would be very surprised if bentley came to villa. I think the lure of the London showbiz seen would be more to his liking. He is overated and a real ponce. I would rather have SWP from chelsea. He would be cheaper too!!!
bellywipes
i meant to say scene! LOL
bellywipes
He may feel that way before speaking to Oneil, but if Oneil is given the chance to speak to Bentley then i would be confident that he can be pursuaded to join Villa.
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
FFS BUY SOME PLAYERS.
ASPINALL
keep up the good work eircol, you made my day! (even if its not written in stone)
azton villain
Looking or any kind a comment linking us to a signing is killing me. On holiday for a week so will have to cold turkey Vital Villa for a while. Hopefully I'll dry out and come back a better person. Alternatively you can imagine me waiting outside foreign gift shops paying £2.00 for a day old Daily Mirror. The highs and lows of being a Villa fan!
Gazvilla
Could be worse Gaz, you could be on holiday for 2 weeks!!
johnmurphy3112
it isn't written in stone azton, it is bloody obvious. Barry deal isn't holding up any signings, the club does not need to sell to buy and the money is there for the manager (if it wasn't he'd have told us and in fact he has said the opposite). If clubs agree fees then players talk over moves. He might choose us, if Spurs bid he might choose them. Not rocket science, just wrong passing it off as gospel or inside info, we had a similar poster last year getting some posters excited. People that know anything don't repeat confidences because if they did, they'd soon find people no longer share confidences with them. Bentley would talk to both clubs and managers and make his decision, I have a sneaky feeling we might just be lucky but then again, I've been known to be over optimistic !
The Fear
IMO I cant see Friedel doing a job at RB! LOL. Still desperate times need desperate measures. Fear, how big is a desperate measure?
holte ender 1969
Well said Fear. Not to discourage any of Eircol's believers, whatever gets you through the pains of the transfer window. But for me, it's more like religion - just gives you a false sense of hope! On another note, all of the teams from Denmark won today, rather convincingly, in their UEFA cup 1st qualifying rounds...
los_angeles_villan
What's happeneing today Eircol? It appears that Barry could be on the move. Pool going for Keane has done the trick. Why haven't we signed Friedel yet? The full back links have totally dried up. No one is talking about SWP but we enquired in previous windows.
tarzan
Well this is it today boys the final chance to get some much needed back ups before our big games tomorrow! I dont think we will sign anyone in time though roll on till the last day of the window then at least we get 2 panic buys at the last minute!
Tez86
I agree Tez, signing dcent players seems a very slow business. Anyone in the know about the SWP situation? It seems accepted that he'll go to Pompey.
tarzan
I'm as worried as everyone else, I cant understand what takes so long in transfers for instance if we are after Miguel and Valencia want £11 mill and we agree that and the player wants £45,000 a week and we agree that where's the problem, the best players cost more money thats obvious, if we want to improve we need the best players available and we're going to have to pay for them, so I'm a little concerned that we haven't got as much funds as we think. I certainly don't want to do a Leeds but I do want to see some acton.
johnmurphy3112
Looks like things are about to start getting serious with Blackburn, Friedel has told them that he does want to leave and they've confirmed they've turned down bids from TWO clubs for Friedel (us and Man Citeh) and also that they've turned down a straight cash bid for Bentley from Spurs (believed to be less than ours), come on MON lets just pay them what they want (like we're asking Rafa to do) and get them on board.
Jaytee247
Yea I like Rovers we dont need to screw them over to get their players just give them what they want as we are desperate to get new faces in to our threadbare squad.
Tez86
i'm upset it's rovers to be honest. we need to just get the business done discreetly. a straght swap gb for bentlet would be majestic
tarzan
I was encouraged to read that our original Bentley bid went in whilst Mark Hughes was still manager. I wonder how many more bids we've placed and kept quiet about. That's how you do it Rafa, Sralex, Jose etc etc
Silver Fox
Hi all, have been watching all the posts with great interests over the past few weeks and have decided to get involved so here i am. I have just notice on the Blackburn Vital site that Brad Freidel has requested a move this morning, looks like another yank will be joining the ranks sooner rather than later! http://www.blackburn.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=116057
AVFC-BrightFuture
Eircol, i have come up with a theory, you are the Vital version of Top Gears 'The Stig', no-one knows who you are, but like the stig, there are people who think you are someone who is a bit more 'in the know' than they let on, i.e. is the stig tiff needel? damon hill? are you related to someone high up at the club? or are you someone who works at the club? is that you Randy? i think its time we made everyone declare themselves. i'm brian and so's my wife.
bobbyfett
SSN have breaking news saying Spurs have had a bid rejected for Bentley! Not good! I can see this deal slipping away! We should have just paid what they wanted at the start!
In MON we trust!
I dont think its as easy as that.. i'd say blackburn held off in giving a value until another club came in (i.e. spurs) and a bidding war could start. Thought the Freidel deal would have sneaked in by now. 2.5 mil is a gr8 offer for someone who is 37 - but with freidel having to request a transfer I'm losing confidence that it will happen before 7 tonight.
azton villain
"O’Neill issues Intertoto clash warning"...reads a headline on NewsNow. "Villa fans issue Intertoto clash warning for O'Neill - if we lose it's all your fault for not buying any cocking players".
olafthegreat
I think that last weeks games with Zurich and Lincoln were an elaborate bluff to make Odense think 'We Suck'. A convincing bluff I grant you!!! But we will really come out of the blocks on fire and totally destroy those 'Danish Bacon Boys'
fredchuff
I suppose FRY THEM would be more appropriate. Come on lads KEEP THE FAITH. It always seems darkest before dawn.
fredchuff
Mr O'Neill needs a result 2moro, a big win will keep us off his back for a few more weeks while he brings players in. If we do lose however his urgency and transfer dealings are going to come under a lot of scrutiny, I for one think we should have a had a RB and a GK at least...
Tez86
A big win tomorrow might just tip Bentley towards us. A showcase of our ambition and ability. Failure is definately NOT an option.
fredchuff
perhaps that is the hold up bentley may want to see if we make it to europe before signing, unlikely but a possibility could also be the same with other players as MON claims he is working on various deals
1982benny
I don't think thats unlikely its highly possible, the bigger players bently miguel etc won't want to move to a club not in europe. if we were to win comfortably tomorrow I think there would be alot move movement next week. so tomorrow is a must win for me.
johnmurphy3112
A player mostly wants to go to a team that can increase his value/wages but the club want the most money for their 'asset'. Can someone answer me this question? who has the final say? For example if Liverpool offer 16 mil plus Finnan for GB but Arsenal offer 18 mil plus Hoyte (just for example) the club will want to sell to Arsenal but Barry will still want to go to the puddle. How does that work?
fredchuff
back in the day it would be the clubs choice but now who bloody knows it should be up to us though
1982benny
MON has come out tonight and said that he abandoned Bentley after our bid was rejected and that he has moved on to other targets. So much for all the insider information eh!!
Jon.H
I've sat here all day scouring the net for news, I go down to the bar for a pint, come back and find O'Neill quotes on the OS about giving up on Bentley. It's something at least...strange though that he's talking public about it, is that mainly just to appease us lot do you think? Yes Martin, move onto other targets please...like a right back. Please.
olafthegreat
well that end's that little saga then! still i would have liked us to have offered 19mil for both friediel and bentley and see what happens from there on in. wonder who we are in for next??
Villa-in-my-Blood
How gutted I feel is indescribable. I was really hoping we'd sign that Bentley kid. He's great. Such a crying shame.
evoflash
Can someone explain this transfer deal thing to MON ? If the bid gets rejected he gives up ????????? Jesus Christ what planet is he on.
ASPINALL
Has anyone thought it could be down to getting Friedel, that the Bentley bid has failed and MONhas given up. Rovers might be prepared to part with friedel to Villa but not Bentley also. A keeper is a far more pressing issue than a winger! Young, Gabby, Routledge,Gardner, Petrov. can all play down the right. But Keepers we need!
gappy65
Spurs have reported Liverpool and Man Utd to the Premier league for tapping up their players (Berbatov and Keane). Villa should have done this ages ago re Barry!!
AMS78
guys seriously anyone else thinking MON does not have the hang of this transfer business? pool qoute 10 for carson, mon says no end off. same with crouch i believe pool qoute 16 MON backs off again, now he's put a 10 mill bid in for bentley, it's rejected and MON disappears. i believe it's called Haggling, why won't he haggle? at least he consistant i suppose the Barry thing 18 and no room for haggling.
Ronin2009
have it on very good authority (my neighbours milkman's cousin) that we'll be signing someone in the next year.
The Fear
Eircol - MON bailed on Bentley - so much for your bull***** gospel.
los_angeles_villan
mon cant deal with the modern transfer windows he just cant cope with it..only carew, routlege and salifou came from nowhere there seems to be some illusion that he pulls rabbits from hats and nobody saw them coming....wrong look at the signings, nrc, young, davies, sidwell these were 'done deals' for weeks and weeks everyone knew they were coming and it still took forever, sidwell even commented on how drawn out his transfer was
avflell
we will probably get friedel but not for about 3 weeks prob get milner, again last day panic help is needed randy the manager is one of the best tactitions/motivators but he is no harry redknapp in the transfer wheeler dealing game
avflell
MON can only get players that other teams dont want. Barring Ashley young who was at a team who was going down and the price he paid was considered a very large amount of money at the time. I genuinely dont think we will be seeing many exciting transfers while MON is in firm contol of them....
Tez86
probably get 3 more signings this window guzan, friedel and milner then we'll all be back on here in january still believing van de vaart, swp, bent, arshavin and some other big names are on the way its not going to happen never does with mon...
avflell
Guys you should chill, the top 4 take their pick and the rest follow. Ourselves, Spurs and Blackburn are pushing back so lets see what happens. The dippers will be *****ed if they can't land Keane or Barry. Also Manure are depending on Berbatov, ha, ha
tarzan
manure tapping up berbatov after all the fuss about ronaldo?? you couldnt make it up could you.
avflell
No way am I giving up on MON. He is the chosen one. We will get though it. UTV
ThirtyOne
It would have been good to have Bentley, however im not that dissapointed. The reported 17mil they want can be spent elsewhere and on more than one player. As good as it would be to see M'ON splashing the cash, he also has to be sensible with it. He doesnt seem affraid to pay big money, so im not worried about his signings as i belive and trust he will bring the right calibre of players in to help drive Villa to the next stage!
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
If we dont pay the going price for players then who the fudge are we gonna get! We will end up again with loanee after loanee just to bolster the squad. Our so called top targets demand top money. If we are serious about all cup fronts this term then we have to spend bigger than we would normally. I am not saying we do a Leeds as MON + Randy are better than that, but we do have to step up a gear and show our intent with some signings that will add more quality to the team and ofcourse quantity. This will involve upping our bids from time to time MON! Haggle as Ronin2009 said and we all say.
holte ender 1969
does anybody else think that we should be broaden our horizons with regards to transfer targets, if martin oneill is not prepared to pay the inflated prices in the british transfer market shouldnt we be looking elsewhere. I know our philosophy of late has been buy up and coming british talent and i like the fact that we have a strong base of homegrown talent and are one of the few clubs in the premiership to have a english spine to the team. Having said that i dont know whats going on behind the scenes and i know we have been linked to foriegn talent but i dont know how much of that is paper talk. i think its about time the scouting network pulled their finger out, as a few compartivley cheap signings and a bigger squad would strengthen our bargaining posistion when it comes to negotiating prices with english clubs as our lack of numbers make signings a neccesity and this is reflected in the prices we have been quoted.
Tony Daley
You don't always have to spend vast amounts of money on individual players, as demonstrated by Everton, its about the right players. Yea Bentley would have been a good signing, but it doesnt just end at him. There are other players out there and on M'ON's target list who can do a similar job to what Bentley does. A player alone will not win us games, its how the team performs together! I actually think, M'ON may even use the money he was going to use for Bentley and use it for other positons which needs strengthening in the team! I reckon Routledge will be given his chance on the right wing.
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
Agree with you on that Tony Daley! As good as it is to see the core of the team is of homegrown talent, players from Europe, South America, Africa who are relatively unknown do seem to come at a cheaper price and have bags of talent!
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
yeah wenger has said it for years, just look at arsenal for proof that you dont have to spend crazy money to get good young players at a reasonable price.im all for this buy british policy villa has but you have to be prepared to pay the prices. i think alot of us are just frustrated and dont wanna see another transfer window where martin oneill plays the waiting until last week of august.
Tony Daley
There also seems to be a lot of negativity regarding the Odense game, well the team which is most likely to start 2moro's game, with the exception of 3 players is similar to last season, and did a fantastic job so why cant they continue that? Likely line up for 2moro - TAYLOR, Gardner, Laursen, Knight, Bouma, ROUTLEDGE, SIDWELL, Reo-Coker, Young, Agobonlahor, Carew. The players in caps are the player who have changed compared to last season, Taylor - there seems to be a fair few who would like to see him given a chance and when called upon last season did well, Sidwell a quality player who the majority of fans were thrilled to have at the club, and Routledge another player still young, with bags of potential and with a bit of confidence flowing could be a massive asset to the team! So if you look at it, a team slightky different to last season but still bags of quality - so why can't they up their game against Odense?? The FC Zurich and Lincoln defeat will have no bearings on the performace 2moro. No doubt M'ON will have the lads geared up and raring to get going on the night
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
He has payed over the odd for British player, Young (£9m - seems a bargain now but at the time was questioned over the high fee paid) NRC (£7.5- 8m, which also if i remember correctly raised eyebrows) and Davies (between £8-10m - also raised eyebrows, as many fans would have liked Cahill to been given the chance)
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
yeah im positive about the odense game, your right jcc on paper we should have enough quality to beat them over the two legs. although i still have my reservations about oneills movement in the transfer window i think sidwell is a snip at 5.5mil and i was delighted we finally sealed that, if he can regain the his reading form i think he will be an absoloute bargain, and if martin oneill can weave his magical mind motivation routledge he prove alot of people wrong. last year was a really good season and i wanna see us kick on, if all goes to plan it will be great to have european football back at villa park and certainly wont do us any harm when it comes to signing players. but we have already lost one main stay of our defence in olly and we look set to lose barry who is arguabley our best player. and i know i dont have to remind anyone but we had a very small squad last year to be competing in three competitions let alone four with a short close season and intertoto cup fatigue could set in next Feb
Tony Daley
Point taken on Young, i must admit i was surprised at the time and it has proved successful but i think reo coker and davies are average and in the current market an average british premiership footballer or in some cases below average costs between 5-10mil e.g barton, richardson, bellamy, alan smith, scott parker, dyer. im not saying we should be buying any of these players but it seems we have put a 10 million ceiling on our ambitions as the bentley bid demonstrates. and if we want quality we are gonna have to up our spending when you consider we are demanding 18 mil for barry and other england internationals the likes of carrick and hargreaves went for 15 mill plus. if money isnt a problem i think we should be setting our sights a little higher and stating our intentions.
Tony Daley
i just do not understand why there isn't a rightback yet?? its not a moan either, i really just don't get it. there has gotta be a few out there, doesn't there??? i always thought the main priorities were the GK and the RB.
leftfoot
There has to be something fundamentally wrong with our transfer dealings/actions,we can`t just put it all down to one man - MON. There needs to be an infrastructure around him and a bleeping half decent scouting network needs sorting as we are amateurish at best and i`m basing that judgement on every transfer window he`s been involved with.
ASPINALL
i agree aspinall, and also do not blame MON. i'm not sure i blame anybody, at the moment i'm just scratching my head. we play the intertoto today without a RB and with 1 GK! and the season starts in a month. sure i have faith in players arriving, but the preparation appears a little loose. i just read something about 2 players from River Plate! linked. 15million euro for the 2. none of them is a RB.
leftfoot
Chimbonda in Sunderland for talks. I know we may not be in for him but I do think he is a very good right back and would be a good signing for us. I am beginning to feel frustrated with the lack of activity in this window. Our season starts today and we still have an extremely limited squad with no first choice GK, RB or RM. We still need at least a CB. cover at RB/LB and another Striker. Normally I would be happy to wait til August but we haven't got that luxury this time. After the signings last week, I expected us to bring in at least another 2 this week. I believe MON is doing his best but I am beginning to worry.
notthedougellisstand
I thought Chimbonda was a shoe in for us to be honest, we need a top class right back and plonker or not, he is a top class right back who also provides cover in other areas.
The Fear
I still have my fingers crossed for Miguel.
Pking
Very disappointing so far chaps. Is it going to be a case of same old, same old? Starting to look that way me thinks.
glensider
Seb Larsson from Birmingham City anyone? Agree on Pascal Chimbonda JF. If we miss out on him, who else is there out there?
glensider
Seb Larsson would be a good shout, think he is a talented player and will only get better! In regards to Chimbonda - he is a quality RB and would do fantastically at Villa, however the list of RB do not stop at him, if he is on M'ON's shortlist, no doubt he will put a bid in for him!
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
he tried to loan Chimbonda didn't he? so it would make sense that he'd go for him now? who knows? MON seems to enjoy leaving everyone second guessing.
leftfoot
Yeah i'll take Seb. Plus Shorey. Plus Bent. Plus Bentley. Plus Hoyte. Plus Green. Plus Ferdinand.
koolbill
Plus M Petrov.
koolbill
Guys, as you know I'm well connnected (I know doris the tea lady). Got to keep this in confidence between us but I've just had it on very good authority that we will be signing at least one player in the next 12 months.

I can't give you a name but I can tell you he is a footballer who has two legs.

You heard it hear first.
The Fear
whoops, here not hear, and certainly not hear hear
The Fear
Sounds promising Mr Fear - keep it coming!
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
do you think our great leader has a phobia about full backs?maybe he was bitten by one as a small child?
avflell
DJ-Twins is on lol!
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
Very Poor from Villa today, but Laursen just put us ahead. Come on Villa push on now!
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
anyone know whos doing the commentry?
avflell
on setanta - dean saunders and someone else! 2-2, dissapointing but Odense played very well! Thought Laursen might of just won it, almost scored a second few minutes before they equalized!
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
so, anyone think we need a right back then?
tonybrum
Lol, its een obvious we have always needed a RB. Hopefully a couple of deals can be pushed through in time for the next Saturday!
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
Did anyone notice DJDJ performance??? Thought he did quite well, for someone who hasn't played for a while - he looked good. Seemed he did more that Petrov and Sidwell.
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
Think we need about three right backs!! it wasn't brilliant but a draw and 2 away goals is ok, thought their keeper was man of the match, we'll be ok at home but dare I say it......hopefully with a few additions!
johnmurphy3112
i have to admit i really didn't enjoy that game, missed the first 20 odd as didn't realise it was a 7pm ko and was subscribing to Satanta. Tuned in to see us 1 nil up for a few minutes and then came Sidwell's og. The rest of the first half was traumatic to watch as was the majority of the second half. I know they are not all match fit yet but god that was frightening. Gardner ran his socks off but that is obviously not his natural position and it doesn't look like it ever will be. But Young looked good though and thank god for Laurson and Freddie. Would have liked to see the Hare come on for the last 10 mins, but anyway, about that right back.......
tonybrum
ill take 2-2, pity we couldnt of held out. i streamed a danish tv feed of the match and the commentators were creaming themselves about djemba x2 performance. thomas sorensen was pitch side for a half time interview, it seems no one at villa has had the heart to explain the meaning of P45.
Tony Daley
I am so glad that we should be signing Brad Friedel early next week, because i personally do not think we would last very long in the UEFA ( if we make it ) with Stuart Taylor goal. He had a bit of trouble holding onto the ball against Odense. Also how long does it normally take to get work permits because nothing else has been said about Brad Guzan. He is still coming isnt he.
villa for ever
do we really have faith MON, or are we all a little bit blinded by the name, i have a feeling we are!
eltoro
i think its two weeks to get a berdict of a work permit...but im nt 100% sure, should hope we hear some clarification on Guzan's transfer this week!
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
It should not really come as a surprise that we conceded in the last minute, it happens all the time anyway with us. As the game was at their ground i did predict a draw, Now Villa should be solid favorites at Villa Park. Villa Park prediction 3-2.
villa for ever
I thought the Ashley Young set piece display was phenomenal. We weren't very strong in midfield, but we have to give Sidwell a chance to bed in. Gardner tried his best, but he is not a Full-Back (Think he could still be a good midfielder for us though). Overall, we weren't great, but we showed a few glimpses of why we are so dangerous. Got a feeling we are going to score a lot of goals this season, so enter if you will , Brad Friedel, were going to need him.
ThirtyOne
M'ON needs to either give Maloney/Routledge a chance on the wing or bring in another winger. It will give the team more balance, as most of the attacking will come down which ever side Young is on. With someone who can do exactly what Young is doing but on the opposite wing, it will give Villa a new dimension to ther game. Young will be doubled up on this coming season and we cant rely too heavily on him next season!
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
I'm a fan of Maloney, I'll admit. But he really just doesn't have his heart in it for Villa. Simple as that. We need flair down the right as well and he just doesn't offer it. SWP or Bentley do. I personally rather have SWP.
los_angeles_villan
I should think last nights result has said more about the manager than it did about the players. Lacklustre.
col8
Reports say were in for Nikola Zigic from valencia, only need 6 more players to have at least a minimalist squad if this goes through!
HuntysVilla
Bent 9m, Milner 7m, Shorey 4m, Green 5m - all very buyable for Villa along with the excellent Scharner 4.5m. Hoyte 4.5m would be a coup. Finnan in part-ex for Barry and we've solved our problems. All for £34m! Take off the Barry 16m and it would be a net outlay of £18m, plus the 5m for Sidders and 8m for Davies leaves £33m outlay and everyone of those players would enhance our side. Who needs Bentley / Barry? Still thnk we should go to Man City and get Petrov off them though. Any takers?
koolbill
Petrov would be fantastic, if only Hughes would let him go!
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
I have it on good authority that we pulled out of the Bentley deal because MON refused to play him at right mid. He wanted to put him at cenre half with Knight as our right midfielder. I know this because MON has also approached me about playing right back, I'm still considering the offer. Not sure I want to be given a slaves wage. I also know we're going for Sidwell. We've offered Arsenal Barry and a balti pie, althought Reading are also in for him. You heard it here first lads. ps Wheres Eircol? He's my hero.
PBAVFC
koolbill how i wish you were in charge of our transfers....
avflell
OK we all know about our managers fondness of Aug 31st transfers between 2345 and 2359. So with that said REALISTICALLY what do you think our line-up will be come Mon 15th Sept v Spurs - I will go with FRIEDEL, MIGUEL (has to be if we aren't in running for Chimbonda - waiting for UEFA football perhaps!! - if not Finnan), BOUMA, LAURSEN, KNIGHT (hope not but think so!!), MILNER (Newcastle need the money!!), YOUNG, SIDWELL, REO-COKER, CAREW, AGBONLAHOR. SUBS- GUZAN, GARDENER, ROUTLEDGE, MALONEY, ZIGIC.
deano.avfc
don't disagree too much there except for knight, I'm going to be a bit controversial here so I apologise now as I love and breathe everything villa, but......gabby isn't and hasn't done it for me lately I'm sorry but if we had someone a bit more lethal we may more a bit further forward.
johnmurphy3112
Agree with you on that johnmurphy! He needs to add to his game, and start getting into better positions more often and become more clinical. He has such as big asset with his pace, would be really good to see him use it to his advantage! Still young though, so can still improve, but definately needs some competition because he is pretty much guarenteed a starting positon at the moment! With Luke Moore leaving, i do think M'ON may be in for another clinical pacey striker to play of JC and give Gabby a break.
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
john carew has been the best thing about pre season he looks like he means business martin laursen too do you think the older guys have learned to look after themselves better in the summer because gabby, sidwell and knight look tired already,
avflell
zat knight is awful and what he is doing here is unknown. gabby needs to lift. sidwell will find himself, he hasn't played much. now this week will we please buy a RIGHTBACK!!! or two.....
leftfoot
Carew definitely looks like he's going to have some season ahead of him..maybe it's the new hair?
los_angeles_villan
I feel like Zat Knight sold himself to Villa rather than MON selling the club to him. I feel like we bought him as a favor because he is a lifelong Villa supporter.
los_angeles_villan
whispers about a Man Utd player and a Barcelona player both heading to Villa Park. my guessing says Nani, who Fergie is annoyed with but would cost 12-15mil, and Gudjohnsen, who could be taking a medical tomorrow! well, who knows?? you gotta laugh!
leftfoot
Rumours? where from?
The Usual Suspect
Where's public enemy number 1 Eircol? He's been good value this window. I assume you mean Joey Gudjohnsson! The other one wants London lappies like our friend Bentley
tarzan
Don't believe the gudjohnson link he's already dismissed us and apparently we've got a bid in for zigic. as for nani no thanks.
johnmurphy3112
Zigic looks quite a player to be fair and his stats pre Valencia are impressive. He's a better option than Marlon in my view and its no disgrace not being able to get a game because a certain David Villa has the starting berth!
Jaytee247
I know video's aren't always the best way to judge a player and that we haven't had great success in the past with Serbian imports but Zigic looks like he knows how to find the net and for such a big guy looks far more mobile then JC or Crouch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCQiITBFpGY
Jaytee247
He looks decent, left foot, right foot, headers, tap ins, 30 yarders. don't know what the bid is but may be worth a bit of a gamble at the right price....I wonder if he can play right back!!!
johnmurphy3112
or if Miguel is part of the deal!?
leftfoot
Spanish media are reporting (http://www.diariovasco.com/20080721/deportes/beti-erreala/real-vuelve-trabajo-20080721.html) that we've made an approach for Spanish goalkeeper Asier Riesgo, currently plying his trade for Real Sociedad. My Spanish isn't great and the Google Translate function also doesn't appear to be spectacular when it comes to Spanish but from what I've gathered no prices have been quoted and it's all coming from 'sources' close to the player, although it does look like there could be some official comment. What would this mean for Freidel? Maybe Blackburn have turned down our offer, so we have pulled out and turned our attentions else where, a case of DAJA VU!!
AVFC-BrightFuture
DEJA VU even
AVFC-BrightFuture
No fee has been agreed for friedel yet, oneill has a few irons in the fire regards the keeper position, well regards all positions actually..
Eircol
Rumours about Danny Simpson seem to be doing the rounds today. We've been linked with a couple of Man Utd youngsters and maybe some of our scouts have been spotted at Reserve games, if we have any active scouts that is? Anyone that comes through the United Academy has had a decent education and is probably worth a punt, although I don't remember Bardsley being all that good when he was on loan. Any RB would be welcome lets face it, my nan could get a game at the minute, think she'd turned down a lucrative contract tho as she is concentrating on knitting me a new xmas jumper!
AVFC-BrightFuture
Eircol, looking into your mystic balls who will be the next signing. If you don't want to say or ur balls have sworn you to secrecy which position will be filled, RB, GK, CB, RW?
AVFC-BrightFuture
thanks for the zigic link jaytee he looks like he knows where the net is i wonder if there is any truth that we have tabled a bid ? I dont see how Valencia had such a poor season with the players that they have david villa ,miguel etc etc
scoops
Eircol - seems as though I was right about the Barry transfer holding stuff up (unwanted sideshow). But it does appear Bentley doesn't want to come to us? Is it realistic to think that players are waiting on a resulkt from the Inter two Bob?
tarzan
AVFC-BrightFuture, are you AVFCBLOG.com? Because your comments seem startlingly similar.
AstonMartinOneill
Cut & paste is a great tool!
AVFC-BrightFuture
What about Seb Larsson of Styville?
tarzan
We need a right back that's for sure, that is doing my head in
tarzan
I really fancy Hoyte from arsenal, right age and would be a great signing, don't see any reason why he wouldn't jump at the chance to come to the mighty villa, 1st team football ect. Seb Larsson is a good player but not sure I could get past his small heath history!
AVFC-BrightFuture
Like Eircol has said, MON has a number options but nothing tangible.
tarzan
Cut and paste is indeed a great tool, but i'd watch Damo doesn't try and sue you...he's a big guy i hear
AstonMartinOneill
We know we went for SWP and Chimbonda before and they haven't turned into bad players since then and they seem to be available, so does the fact we don't seem to be back in for either mean that we've got better lined up such as Miguel & Bentley (Yes I know MON has said he's ended his interest but we all know he keeps his cards close to his chest)? Hopefully so and they're just waiting to see if we get through this weekend.
Jaytee247
Why are we bidding for a tall lanky striker when we have Carew and Harewood? I don't get it. We have no RB or GK or GB replacement.
tarzan
I did say the bentley thing is not dead and buried just yet, villa are playing hard ball, i think it could be working as blackburn have now come out and said they will sell for the right money, sounds as if they are inviting us back to the table, oneill wont be drawn into a bidding war though..
Eircol
JT optimism! love your vibe, a rare treat on this thread. Chimbonda is going to Sunderland
tarzan
Why Eircol? He should just offer more!
tarzan
AstonMartinOneill (AKA Damo??), I'm new to this game, sorry if this is a cardial sin, no offence intended. Just thought the blog was worth spreading. On the topic of an available RB if miguel is a none starter, Valon Behrami? maybe on his way to West Ham, surely AVFC would be seen as a better proposition?
AVFC-BrightFuture
Yes I'd heard that tarzan and surely he'd come to us over them and surely his agent would have contacted us to see if we were still interested, which begs the question have said no as we've got better lined up then? I really hope so. On another point I know Friedel has been class for the last few years and I know everyone will point to DJ as still being the best keeper in the Prem at the age of 93 etc but can't help feeling that a 3 year deal on a wage that is making him want to leave Blackburn is a lot, Don't get me wrong I'd take him for next year but for 3? It smells a little of the Schmeichel deal which wasn't exactly a great success for us.
Jaytee247
Tarzan, we have got JC and the hare but who's to say this new fella isn't better than both of them? I understand what you mean though as we have more important priorities.
johnmurphy3112
Na man I'd still take Friedel. He's not that old for a keeper.
The Usual Suspect
Chimbonda wiil come to us over Sunderland then would he Jaytee247?????? It didn't quite work like that re Gordon did it? Still think we will get Miguel and this is not a prediction aka Eircol just a blind optimistic hunch, well I can dream can't I?
happyvillan
I just want bentley and thats that!!!!! We need to bid and bid quick, get him in before Spuds geta decent offer on the table!!!! And we really need the RB by sat, I just wanted to hold Gardner and tell him everything is ok after the torment he had on Sat!!!!!
erv2005
Mate, i only wish i was Damo, but i was checking whether you were, or whether you were just passing his comments off as your own. Anyway, Friedel will do nicely, and the thought of the spanish guy, without even seeing him, doesn't fill me with confidence...i know we all like foreign unknown signings as they have the mystery around them, but I've never heard of him and he's only 24, which strikes me as too inexperienced...at a time when we could do with a sturdy goalkeeper with a firm head on him. Right back, i have no idea, because there's been no sustained rumour, the Miguel one seems to die every 2 weeks only to be returfed by some lazy hack. Zigic is a good player, but i can again share the concerns of many that we have Carew and the Hare who are both brutal big players, and we've only got one speedy one in Gabby, and Gabby is the one of the two who needs a kick up the arse with some good competition in the shape of Bent perhaps. But right now just as big a concern in Centre Back, because i had a horrible dream the other night that Laursen was injured for 6 months, leaving only Zat Knight at the back! i.e. the worst scenario ever. If we can get a good RB who also is very competent at CB we would be quite clever...I suppose this is why anton has been banded about. Don't expect anything to happen this week though, can't see it myself.
AstonMartinOneill
eircol I thought you said on the forum that Bentley wanted to come to Villa it was all down to the fee....still sticking with that?I might go against many peoples views but i think Bentley is Very overated... one good season last year, what I have seen of him he seems one paced.... but can deliver a good ball. Tbh I cannot think of many people Arsene has released who have gone on to be a real miss for the Gunners..... Bentley could possibly be counted as one, and possibly Campbell (who did himself no favours leaving at half time against Wham a few years ago)
fatloser
dont know if this is a new one or not i just read on sportinglife that harry redknapp claims younis kaboul wants to sign for pompey but is coming to villa www.sportinglife.com/football/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=soccer/08/07/21/SOCCER_Portsmouth_Nightlead.html have no idea if this is true but its another example of managers opening their mouth when they shouldn't and our very own MON has also been guilty of this.
1982benny
Sunderland have held taks with him as well, don't really no much about him mind you, so wouldnt no if he would be any good!
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
Kaboul story has appeared on Setanta now.
simonbigron
Don't rate him, there's better players out there I'll be disappointed if thats the standard of player we'll be going for.
johnmurphy3112
Kaboul would be a very good signing!! I would actually really like that £23m deal Keano is after - Chimbona, Kaboul, Tainio and Malbranque. Actually make it £35m and throw in Bent (but that look unlikely if Keane and Berbatov are away!)
deano.avfc
dont know too much about him but as far as i know he has 2 legs and we need some depth if nothing else, i wouldnt be thrilled with it but its a start especially if we want to compete on multiple fronts.
1982benny
Friedel, SWP, Seb Laarson, Miguel and Zigic. Finnan in the Barry deal. Milner? and Alan Smith. let's see............
leftfoot
Alan Smith - no thanks - don't think he is any good, never really rated him as well. Zigic - don't see why we would need him as we have Carew and Harewood, but ill take the rest with a few more!
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
swap Smith for Bent and sounds good to me. How come spurs are linked with so many big name players? Arshavin, pavyluchenko now too.
los_angeles_villan
Did anyone see Pompys goals on SSN this morning. The crouch Defoe parnership looked sharp and they got 3 goals between them, I know it was only Hartlepool or someone like that but I think those 2 will do well and Pompy will be a very good side next year. I cant help thinking those 2 players (since they were both heavily linked) are players we should have pushed and pushed to get....
Tez86
yeah crouch and defoe seem to have a good understanding.. its a pity we dont see the same from carew n gabby!!! I actually think Kaboul would be a decent signing. Cheaper and more potential than AF. He was v. unfortunate with injuries etc last season.
azton villain
Smith is rubbish. MON would never buy him. Spurs are going ton need a couple of top strikers soon, thats why they are linked with top ones.
ThirtyOne
Would also love to see Milner in a villa jersey again, but it appears the scouse are lurking around him 2.
azton villain
The Scouse have no dough. They admit it too.
tarzan
Is us qualifying for the UEFA that big a deal? Personally I don't think it is. It's so early in the season, and I think most players want Champions League.
tarzan
M'ON has denied any interest in Zigic on the OS
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
Thats a shame Zigic looked decent, and tarzan qualifying for europe would be a good thing for one it gives us a higher profile and there is also financial benifits.
johnmurphy3112
Cant believe the Zigic rumour was false!!! So MON has denied moves for Bentley and Zigic - two players who would get into our starting line-up and be key men for us, ambitious signings who would show our ambition!! Gutted!!!! Lets now hear him deny that any moves made for Friedel and Kaboul and how Savage and Heskey were 'always his first targets, players with a point to prove'. SO FRUSTRATING!!
deano.avfc
What is MON doing all day if he is not making bids for players, all I hear he is workin hard ion improving the squad but actions speak louder than words!!!
Tez86
It's like pulling teeth. I think Milner, Ferdinand and I'm praying for RB are the links. Not sure what the hells going on with Friedel, but Blackburn are probably getting a replacement lined up first. You can probably see their logic there.
tarzan
sterting to get really p***ed off with mon now. wtf is he doing. we were s**te on saturday to top it aswell. i wouldnt be suprised if odense were lucky enough to roll us over at home aswell.
Stig
As someone posted on the forum, any player signed now will not be able to play on Saturday, so it doesnt make a difference to our team against Odense. The right hand side was weak, but there is quality in the team, and the team that featured against Odense is not to different to the team which we had last season, im very confident that the lads can come to VP and finish the job!
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
Hear Hear JCC you tell them. This site steeps into negativity too often. How can MON be blamed for dismissing a BS link he was never interested in? Dismissing a bogus link doesn't mean that he isn't looking to bring in someone else. 95% of the transfer rumours in the press at this time of the year are rubbish, why is this any different?
The Usual Suspect
I have to disagree slightly with you there JOHN.CAREWS.CREW our right side was awful and much worse than last season in that Mellberg was at RB. Now he was not suited to that position but here me out - Having a poor right side means alot more than a poor right side - it means having a poor middle too. Petrov, NRC, Sidwell, Gabby, Laursen and Knight all had to move across and help out there when Odense attacked down that flank. When our other three defenders tried to play offside Gardner could not do so effectively. If I was to ask you who was man of the match v Odense most would say Bouma or Young - our two left-sided players who did not have as much pressure to cover for our weak right side!! The rest of the team would have been much more settled and confident in an experienced Mellberg than a young attack-minded centre-midfielder playing RB. In other words while we have no RB or RM the rest of the team have to keep one eye on that side and it unsettles anyone. Bottom line is we need 2 RB minimum - Chimbonda may not be everyones choice but I tell you this - he could have been signed up weeks ago and we could still have been looking for our 'first choice' be it Miguel or anyone!! If we had a natural RB I would have no doubt we could go an hammer Odense on Saturday!!
deano.avfc
Exactly right Deano, we have all been talking about this for weeks, its not as if the right back problem has suprised us. I was saying in the forums last week that Stephen Carr is on a free and while he not be the quality we need to kick on HE IS A RIGHT back and better than anyone we have at the min at that position, a years contract for him would have been about right because lets face its going to MON that long to get round to getting one.
Tez86
JCC, it that right any player signed now wouldn't be eligable for saturday? why?
johnmurphy3112
I think we are treating the Intertoto as a pre-season warm up. Like it or lump it chaps.
tarzan
I agree with Tarzan. I think Martin will regard it only as a bonus if we qualify for UEFA cup. He seems to be more comitted to the league position at the moment otherwise he would have been more prepared for this opportunity. We can all see we are not prepared for the new season yet let alone a european campaign.
fredchuff
I'm sure we only applied on the proviso that this wouldn't disrupt our preseason preparations, most managers don't like this tournament one bit. I personally think its a joke we didn't qualify from being 6th, but that's irrellevant. Can Kaboul play RB?
tarzan
Martin O'Neills plan was that in 5 years we would be playing champions league football. I believe he is trying to "build" a team/squad for this and that it was never his intention to "buy" that team. As long suffering as we all are we will need to be patient for a while longer yet and hopefully in 2 years we will not only be competing to break into the top 4 but will be challenging the top 4. Buying a lot off players would only bring short term / limited success, bulding the team will bring longer sustained success and will be all the more satisfying.
mickdub
Maybe the fact that MON hasn't dismissed the Kaboul rumours yet should be taken as a positive - perhaps we are goign to sign someone after all! If we want to know what's going on then ask another team's manager! Blimey!
AVGD
Kaboul****, another Spuz reject to sit on our bench and keep Routledge company so he doesn't have to stare into space listening to his walkman. I know that the prem takes getting used to but why aren't we trying out top class foreign players who haven't tried it yet rather than ones that have failed at other clubs.
Villan444
Looks Like Kaboul could be off to Sunderland - another one bites the dust!
tarzan
good I agree with villan444, don't think he was good enough.
johnmurphy3112
Barry apparently playing tonight....bet he can't wait to be booed by the Villa faithful!!
In MON we trust!
If the majority of the seniors are going to be rested, wonder if he stands of chance if being captain?
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
I think we should all be patient MON knows what he is doing, he has said that he wants to improve on what we have and that takes time. We villa supporters have had a lifetime of rushed signings that have made little or no impact, MON has made big strides in just two years, we all want instant success but that very rarely happens. Lets make sure we supporters do things right also and get behind the manager he is one of the best around and we are very lucky to have him and a board with ambition, he could go and blow 50 million tomorrow but there would be no guarentee of success. He is the right man for the job i am just as eager as everyone else for new signings but our club is going forward.
astonsteve
mon has only said he is TRYING to improve the squad BUT that it is very DIFFICULT to sign players and he is only HOPEFUL of getting some more numbers in....but lets face it if the 11 who start against man city somehow manage to stay fit and not get suspended then they would be played every week,im not critisising but look at last season he only made changes when we had to and even when marlon and co were looking dead certs they still didnt get starts.
avflell
I understand that building a team requires patience but not having a first choice right back for over a year is rediculous. If you can't get the quality you want then at least get someone. Gardner got slaughtered last weekend. I feel sorry for him because he clearly has the heart of a lion and could be a very good player, but he isn't a right back and odense made him look very average. Interesting to see that over 50% of ppl are very dissapointed with the clubs transfers in the past few years.
UTV
Kaboul = a Younger Zat Knight nuff said
fatloser
Another day passes and no signings. I feel sick.
PiperUK
Bit gutted that were not in for Zigic
Pking
Isn't MON a bit anglo-centric? Surely there are great players in Germany, Holland and Russia that would foot the bill. Someone give him a copy of World Soccer for gods sake. Read it. Say "oh, he sounds good." Pick up the phone. Fly him over. Give him a contract. Play him. Team wins matches. Team qualify for the Champions League. Team wins Champions League. Villa fans explode with joy. Simple.
PiperUK
Friedel, SWP and Miguel this week - at least that is what the crystal ball is saying. wonder what eircol thinks of that?
leftfoot
I hope your right leftfoot, I dont really like SWP but I just want to see some action and a GK and RB are something we need sooner rather than later! It worries me that already we are on the 4th day after our poor performance in the intertoto and yet there is no firm links to anyone, even the friedel one has gone quiet. The only firm one MON has come out and tiold us its rubbish!
Tez86
The reason Friedel has gone quiet as they need to line up a replacement.
tarzan
i think spurs will offer 13mil + robinson for bentley, which makes a bit of sense, and in a strange way Villa have assisted that move by going for friedel. but who knows?? SWP is not my cup of tea either tez86 but there is a feeling he might arrive. as far as miguel goes, please get him here MON, he is a class signing for a position we must fill yesterday!!
leftfoot
The thing is, I don't think BBurn want Robinson like we didn't want Carson. Miguel could be holding out to see if we qualify for Europe, but I'm grasping at straws there. It is so prolonged, Portsmouth seem to push the deals through way quicker.
tarzan
SWP is definitely a target IMO. Dodgy 'Arry is pals with Wrighty though.
tarzan
I've just worked out that we need to be unveiling 3 players a day to build a normal Premiership squad....
olafthegreat
FROM TRIBAL FOOTBALL - Aston Villa are swooping for Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips ahead of Portsmouth. The Sun says Villa are ready with an offer of around £8m for SWP after Pompey cooled their interest in the England winger, 26, who has little chance of a starting place at Stamford Bridge. That would be a great signing - in my opinion he is a better player than Bentley, Milner, Lennon and anyone else he have considered for the RW position!!!
deano.avfc
Help settle an argument for me here - it is based on an issue raised here about the poor partnership and link-up of Gabby and Carew as a front two. I was discussing with a mate that Shaun Maloney could be a great player for us but pointing out I thought he was better centrally. I then pointed out that when he played up front with Carew there was good link-up between them. Now - help with this, as my argument I am pretty sure the following happened - please correct me if I am wrong!! - against Chelsea last season when we drew 4-4 we were up 2-0 before Knight got sent off before half-time and went in 2-1 up. Maloney was subbed at half time to bring on a defender. BUT he had scored both of our goals. The second was a long range hit and Cech blunder but the first goal I remember being a cross from Gabby to Carew who looked like he would have headed for goal himself but he instead knocked the ball on for Maloney to score. It was great understnading between the two. I think he should be given his chance up front alongside Carew on Saturday - possiblty at the expense of Gabby. However a 4-4-2 with Gabby and Young on the flanks and Maloney up with Carew could help with Petrov being the one left on the bench. Just a thought!!!
deano.avfc
I'd of left petrov in Denmark, get gardener in center mid and your right about playing gabby on the wing deano, gives the team a better balance.
chris the villan
yeh I agree deano, gabby's not doing it for me up front so a stint on the wing (which he's played alot under MON)and he could use his speed to get back and help gardner, and what harm can it do to give maloney a start, every time I've seen him play he looks a threat and is handy at set plays.
johnmurphy3112
losing the will to live with this transfer window. someone give me some good news.
Stig
The weather's quite nice at the moment stig.
chris the villan
So Chimbonda is having a medical at Sunderland!! Well that must mean that MIGUEL is in the bag. If MON was interested in Chimbonda in January and now is not we must have a better one lined up. Surely of all out RB links only Bosingwa and Miguel were better players than Chimbonda. So Miguel to be our new number 2 within the week...........I know I am delusional but leave me to it!!!
deano.avfc
Deano you are make the wild assumption that Chimbonda would have joined us over them. I think this is where most of our fans are not living on "planet football" as Simon Jordan called it. Chimbonda would have chased the cash. Also Gordon chose them over us too. The weather is majestic isn't it? SWP has always been a target, but it does depend on whether he wants to leave the bright lights for us.
tarzan
Any news on the grape vines Eircol?
tarzan
I swear SWP is constantly saying he's not interested in a move. I know you can't believe everything these people say but he's been saying it for 4 or 5 years and he's kept to his word so far, based on that I'm believing him over the paper talk. I've got a feeling he's having a pretty good time sitting on the bench just earning his cash. He obviously doesn't care about regular football that much.
PTP
PTP, I tend to agree with you on that one, that's why we can't sign anyone decent. He's still a target though.
tarzan
I hope so, he's a great player and would do good for us, I haven't seen him dive which puts him ahead of what we've got in my opinion. Wherever he goes he will be fantastic, he will have so much to prove and hes got the skill to do it.
PTP
He won't come and I don't want him to...his crossing is 2nd Division - it's not even funny it's that poor. SWP....P as in urine as in urine poor! Bentley is still the number one winger in the PL - English that is - bar Ash who plays on left. He has the talent to move inside too. We should do our best to get him but I believe he wants London not Brum. Shame. Lennon is 5hite.
koolbill
SWP is much faster and Bentleys much more of a div, we should sell Ash and buy a winger with some balls. I feel sick watching Villa players dive, Gabby as well. Sack the lot. Give me Milner and Shauny any day.
PTP
PTP you are mad. Sell Ash? NEVER. We don't need a speedy winger who can't cross. Bentley can cross without going past and is better in midfield and younger and has better shinier cleaner hair!
koolbill
Better hair than Jason McAteers!
koolbill
Maybe not sell Ash but MON should sort him out. Until MON came I had never noticed a Villa player dive and I'm blaiming him for it, and Ash, and Gabby. Diving *****ers, we're as bad as the rest of them. Plus I bet we'd get alot for Ash now. Enough for 2 Milners, mmmm. Shiny hair doesn't do much, and I bet Bentley would love tripping over his imagination as well, haven't seen him do it yet but he looks the type.
PTP
The scousers have bought a young right back, does that mean that we are finally going to get their old one?!!
johnmurphy3112
Come on MON get a wriggle on. If we get a few injuries in training we are going to be *****ed. Im still trying to be patient and keeping the faith but its hard.
astonsteve
Friedel bid accepted £2m on Sky! Get in!

I think we must be close to getting Kaboul as well as he hasn't signed on for Sunderland with the others. We were linked with Malbranque as well and he hasn't signed for them either [yet?!]
AVGD
AVGD now you're getting carried away!!.But I hope you're right. If they all signed would they be eligible for Saturday?
happyvillan
Not sure - they only need 24 hours notice to play in an Intertoto tie, but I think it has to be 24 hours before the first leg - so not available for this weekend? May be wrong though?!
AVGD
Good news, will be a huge asset for Villa in goal when the transfer goes throu! Wonder if Man City are still in the running - hopefully not!
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
Valon Berhrami, a very promising right back/Right mid from Lazio with 15 caps for switzerland has signed for West Ham for £5M. Another one passes us by
UTV
Supposedly we're not signing him until blackburn find a replacement. So we could be waiting a while.. unless robinson is on his way! good business if it goes through. one of the most reliable keepers in the premiership.
azton villain
Great news about Friedel a good solid player behind the back 4. When are the rest of the players going to start arriving. Kaboul has never been a footballer, some of his performances last season reminded me of bomsong when he was at Newcastle, but we must trust MON. Its just fustrating knowing we need to add to our small squad and nothing really seems to be happening. Hopefully after saturday the signings will start rolling in or they all will sign at mignight on the last day as the transfer window closes!!
pksandell
happyvillan in response to your question about Friedel being eligible for Saturday if a move is completed Deadlines 17.16 The player lists have to be submitted through the national association to UEFA by 12 June 2007 (24.00 hours CET). 17.17 For the three rounds of the competition, lists may be amended up to 24 hours prior to the match, provided that the club’s national association confirms in writing that the new players are eligible to play at domestic level by the respective qualifying date listed above.
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
Happy Villan:"Break out the bunting". Very funny mate. Good stuff. All we need now is Shorey, Bent, Finnan and Hoyte plus Ferdinand or Scharner - prefer Scharner. oh and BENTLEY! we've on spent 7.5m if Friedel comes - minus 3.5m for Moore and that's 4.5m, possible 8m max for Davies and it's only 12.5m....loads left considering we only got Routledge last window and have moved up places in the league.....will we have a bonus if Eufa cup qualification is gained?
koolbill
With regards to Kaboul, think of him as the French Curtis Davies. He was shaping up to have a stellar career until he signed for Spurs, which may mean that he can't cut it in the EPL, but hopefully just means that Spurs are rubbish at developing young talent, which is often talked about. He may be more than cover, he could be Laursens replacement and long term partner for Davies (in a proffesional sense!)
azreal13
koolbill - you missed the £5m for Cahill
Gordonsleftboot
I think Kaboul would be a very smart signing he seems to be on his way to Sunderland though.
Pking
Yea along with Chimbonda whop funnily enough is a right back we have been linked with!
Tez86
Good spot Gordon - basically we've spent jeff-all! It's time for big money of you ask me.....Bent and Bentley must be targets as we'll never get Trez or Eto'o. Same goes for Shorey, he must be a target. Finnan and Hoyte are no-brainers but it all depends on their willingness to come to us doesn't it.....nothing about MON not bidding or not having money as we have lots of it.
koolbill
Ha talk about dream signings and Sammy Eto'oooo would be one of them for me, quick, clinical and available (although very doubtful for us). I would get a tattoo of MON's face on my chest if he pulled of a signing like that!!!
Tez86
The reason behind Pascal Chimbonda's imminent move to Sunderland has been revealed: the full-back is poised to become the club's highest-paid player. If The Sun is to be believed, 'Black Cats boss Roy Keane will hand the French right-back a £56,000-a- week deal valid for the next four years. 'The contract convinced Chimbonda, 29, to snub Everton and Newcastle - who were also trying to land his signature.'
tarzan
Cut and paste I know but Chimbonda is a proper mercenary. Everyone assumes Bentley is going to Spurs but they've only bid 9m!!!
tarzan
I know, it's PS3 stuff isn't it. I can but dream...to be honest Schweinsteiger or Pavluychenko would be nice and i think we have the ability to get them but Bentley would add a touch of glamour and style and unfortunately that is what some good players look for in respective new clubs...
koolbill
Miguel is meant to be our star signing?
tarzan
Not sure on pavyluchezco or whatever his name is. I never heard of him till this season. Schweinsteiger would be fantastic even if just to have his name on the back of the shirt. Who would be your (semi) realistic dream team for this season then koolbill, if money and attracting players wasnt a massive problem?
Tez86
As Eircol said MON appears to have a few options, the Intertoto pre-pre season circus, has sidetracked the real discussion around building for the future. I think Barry will move when we have his replacement sorted. I don't think MON fancies Finnan as he has better options at this stage. Being too short termist with our transfers is a mistake.
tarzan
I have a semi thinking about Schweinsteiger on my shirt.
tarzan
What about a quick poll about Barry playing on Saturday? I think we should pick him as he showed the other night he can perform no matter what the situation. It may be the last chance he gets to wear a Villa shirt competitively. It will also show Rafa that he is still our player until he stumps up the cash. If we can get the booing over with, perhaps then if the deal falls through, he can stay and play this season [once he has apologised, etc]. At least it will give the fans a chance to show him what we think of him - good or bad!
AVGD
Any rumours today gents?
tarzan
No way after his Wigan performance. He could get injured.
tarzan
If he does play there should be no booing at all as we don't want it to affect the rest of the lads.
johnmurphy3112
Sorry Tarzan - Wigan performance?
AVGD
I'm sure you remember GB's sterling display against Wigan when he was under so much mental anguish around his proposed move to Scouseland.
tarzan
Oh the home game we lost 2-0! I think there was more than him who played poorly that day - but I see what you are saying.
AVGD
Tez, my dream team for this season would be Friedel, Shorey, Laursen, Davies, Warnock, Bentley, Young, Martin Petrov, Sidwell, Bent and Carew. That would see us utilising a midfield of either flat 4 with Bentley coming in to Centre right and M Petrov swapping with Young at will and Bentley too with Young also free to link behind the front two. there you go...controverdsial as Nigel 'born leader but no end pass' Reo Coker would be on the bench with S Petrov and Maloney.
koolbill
Tez, I've still kept it realistic as I'd opt for Eto'o and Trezeguet otherwise....However I think we are overlooking 2 players that would do a tremendous job for us: MORT GAMST PEDERSEN and STEWART DOWNING. Our team balance with either of these two would be amazing...imagine Ash on his natural right side? I wouldn't even entertain the idea of Bentley on the right then.
koolbill
Pedersen would be a hell of a signing not sure about Downing though. You'll obsviously going to have a great bench with Bouma and Gabby to throw into the mix,Koolbill, pity it's all fantasy but we can dream.
happyvillan
Interesting team selection, you have raved about Martin Petrov before, I'm not so sure sometimes he is great other times he is poor, he has shown a lot more promise than our petrov though. I would probably go with Brad Snr, Shorey, Hoyte/Miguel, Laursen, Davies, Young, Sidwell/Barry, Van der Vaart/Diego, Bentley/Milner, Bent/Eto, Carew. I am undecided on a few positions which is why i have given two in some cases, as happy villian said its a shame its only fanstasy :'(
Tez86
Ive heard that we havent actually bid for Friedal yet.
astonsteve
Tez, it is a shame mate. Unless you're Portsmouth and then everyone comes to you regardless of how far you are away from Landan. Got to be a wages issue...? Like the Van der Vaart and Milner choices. I think Martin Petrovs downturn in form coincided with the whole of Svens team sliding away...
koolbill
Aww, you both left out Freddie. Can't have that he's a good player. He scored a goal and all.
PTP
In my heart I think we can attract these players in my head I know we cant. I would be very happy with a Barry/Sidwell partnership in the middle Sidwell is a little more offensive than Gaz Baz so I think it would work well. I am suprised Shorey hasnt moved anywhere yet and still very supirsed we havent sorted out at least 1 RB yet. Strikers I cant think of many that would be realistic, I dont think we will get Bent to come as Spuds are going to lose Keane and Berba and obviously without Champoions league football we are never going to attract the likes of Eto.
Tez86
I personally like offensive sidebacks some who can cross over and put a good ball in. PTP that goal was the funniest goal I have ever seen tho lol
Tez86
i want Barry to stay and I bet i'm far from alone. He's been a complete muppet over this window but we need all the quality we can get and he is undoubtedly quality.
UTV
I want Freddie as our LB to be honest, I think he's deserved his place in our side, people keep going on about how he's not going to take us forward, even suggesting Riise as a replacement. Bouma's done alright by me and as the team stands a LB is the last thing we need.
PTP

The Fear
Kaboul has agreed personal terms with Sunderland according to SSN. So much for Harry Redknapp's words of wisdom.
AMS78
Koolbill you would be happy to have a back 4 with 2 leftbacks (Shorey/Warnock) and I suppose tracking back and protecting the back four would be Sidwell's job alone.... because none of the other three you mention are any good at it particularly Martin Petrov. this is not fantasy football mate.
fatloser
After Friedel I recon SWP and Malbranque. Still leaving us needing a RB of course.
tarzansbrother
fatloser, if you read the thread between Tez and I it clearly was fantasy, no need to get your serious head on. p.s thought warnock was a rb ;-). Anyway, don't care about tracking back so there! And who says Laursen and Davies don't track back, is that what you're suggesting? what's your team then?
koolbill
Malbranque and SWP....I hope not...Bentley and Shorey - yes. Bent - yes. Come the Uefa qualification then our belated players will roll in. Let us just ask ourselves one question: Do we have the right to say that certain players should be here right now? given the fact that 9 out of 10 of them are waiting for us to qualify for Europe then I say we don't. Europe = good players attracted to club. Sod Chimbonda, sod Tainio, sod Kaboul, sod the other guy as well. They will come when we qualify. Mark my words. THEY WILL COME. It's just an awful shame that this is the hoop we have to jump through to ensure they're here...it's also hopefully the hoop Bentley is waiting for us to jump throught too. Bloody hell it'd be nice wouldn't it.
koolbill
It says really early on in this thread that Eircol reckons if Villa can agree the fee then Spurs won't be an issue...surely that's the case if Bentley hasn't signed for them....money and Uefa confirmation and he's ours...?
koolbill
I don`t hear us linked with anyone who will improve us and if Barry goes we`re in deep schmuck,we were supposed to be getting big players come the Randy revolution ( Schneider,Van der Vaart`s etc ) yet they`ve been far from it ( Sidwell,Routledge`s etc ) the reality has been far different from the talk,mid-table mediocrity is the way they want it from what i can see, hope i get proven wrong.
ASPINALL
aspinall - friedel will improve us. sidwell is a good signing. schieder or vandervaart would be immense but they just will not come here at this point, will they? i think 6th is not mid-table mediocrity, and if not for a few dodgy games/halves, 4th wasn't far away. we don't want Kaboul + Tiano either. we will qualify for uefa tomorrow, and wether or not this means better quality comes in or not, what can you do? Villa are solid, even with the Barry mess, we are on the up!
leftfoot
I reckon 2 signings next week if we qualify for UEFA, not including Fridel.
los_angeles_villan
los_angeles_villan, would love that to be the case and pray to the lord (MON) that you are correct. Leftfoot, refreshing to hear after aspinall outburst. Who is everyones choice as RB and GK? We have a good player in GB and I for one hope he gets his head right for sat game and ends up staying with us. Let's get behind the whole team shall we. Get a bid in for SWP now MON as he aparantly wishes to play for you.
holte ender 1969
I'm really puzzled by Spurs going for Bentley, they are getting caught up in the histeria. They need defenders - even the fans can't understand it.
tarzan
Looks like we're back in for Kaboul! http://www.sportinglife.com/football/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=soccer/08/07/25/SOCCER_Sunderland.html&TEAMHD=soccer
AVGD
Kabouls deal has hit a glitch apparently it was family problems according to SSN, he has an extra 24 hours to decide if he wants to go up north. Also did any1 see that MON was 4/1 favourite to be the next United manager :S
Tez86
nope think the glitch is he's signing for us. Well Harry said so it must be true! And MON at Utd, that'd be funny during the transfer window. Could you imagine the mental turmoil he'd be in spending £28m on a single player!
tonybrum
I wouldn't mind Kaboul in all fairness, but i think what is interesting is malbranques stance on going to sunderland...seems to me as if he's waiting for MON to put a bid in. I'd have malbranque in our squad offers something different and has a fair bit of quile - i think the speeling is or guyle.
CPAVFC
sky sports news said we've put in a second undisclosed bid. Sunderland must have put in a higher offer than our first one. Looks like its a bidding war then. Didn't think Martin did bidding wars?
tonybrum
Don't rate Kaboul, but more inportantly why are we putting 'late bids' in for players, late bids are a sign of panic buying and not a sign of structured deliberance, which is the normal MON way.
johnmurphy3112
We did it to Wigan with Marlon...
AMS78
The same happened with Guzan in january when he was going to Celtic too. Sidwell said he had offers from 2 or 3 other clubs, so I don't see the issue. I really thinks it's normal protocol nowadays and depends on the all powerful player an agent deciding where they want to go. Keane wants to join Liverpool, Bentley wants to join Spurs its an open secret.
tarzan
was only having a laugh about the bidding thing, but if you explain it i guess its not funny. Anway, looks like his must be quite imporatnt in MON's transfer plans. Have a few reservations about him myself, but he is promising and hopefully if he does come to villa he'll have a point to prove. He's got to want to come here over sunderland surely. We jsut need to bid a bit more, or give sunderland Zat knight to pull out the bid!
tonybrum
See MON on the official site is saying that if we can get into the Uefa Cup proper then it can help you attract players, especially ones from abroad. Now MON isn't one to give out info just for the sake of it in my view, so is this what he's been told by a few players and agents and so he is waiting to make sure we qualify before we can make the quality signings we need?
Jaytee247
all is quiet rumour wise today, only two links! Anyway, just to firm up what I said recently, and this is just between us, I have a source close to Villa and his cat told me yesterday that Villa are definitely set to sign at least two to three players within the next 12 months. Folks, you heard it here first, Vital Villa, always with our ears to the ground, mostly because people keep pushing us over.
The Fear
We've been given permission to speak to big bad Brad....pity he can't play tomorrow though!!
In MON we trust!
a late bid for Kaboul maybe? surprises me a bit. but he is young and tough and MON must like him so thats good enough for me.
leftfoot
KB just for you Freidel, Finnan (Realistic) Laursen, Davies, Bouma, Milner, Sidwell, Hokey Cokey, Young, Carew, Agbonlahor. Not over exciting, i know but unfortunately realistic I am afraid. And finally KB don't take things so literally!
fatloser
I have just read an aticle detailing the full extent of Valencia'a debt problems and they are in some serious 5hite! 439 million euros in debt plus an extra 350 million euros they have borrowed for a new stadium, thats a whopping 789 million euros of debt! They need to repay 150million euros by December 31st and need to sell assets ASAP to keep out the baliffs. Surely we can take advantage and get hold of Miguel sooner rather than later, maybe even Silva to replace barry & Joaquin on the wing with Young, nice! Maybe I'm living in fantasy land again tho ahy?
AVFC-BrightFuture
Didn't the Spanish waiter come from Valencia? Seems he is good at picking clubs to manage that have no cash and big debts. Anything to do with his poor performance in the transfer market?
Gordonsleftboot
Fatloser, just for you. I love you like a brother! No drama matey, I so thought Warnock was a RB tho. Surely you have a view on a striker mate? Hoyte as well for RB? Like the Milner link, good shot on him but he needs to settle now and produce all season long. I think he'd excel in our team as long as the link with Sidders works. Would still prefer Bentley...just believe he's more interchangable.
koolbill
fatloser, if you were to change finnan for miguel or hoyte it would be a whole lot better.
johnmurphy3112
Bentley's hair and face colour are the only interchangeable things about him. In fact he is so vain he would probably welcome someone making a doll of him which could be dressed in different shell suits and amounts of bling from day to day.
Villan444
koolbill and johnmurphy3112 I agree that Miguel or Hoyte would be better than Finnan (long term) however I cannot understand why Miguel is not signed if he is indeed the target (unless Uefa Cup qualification has to be assured) and with kolo Toure now suffering with Malaria I reckon Hoyte sees his chance of getting regular games improve as he plays CB as well and that leaves the Arse with Senderos and a mentally unstable Gallas and AW will have to buy not sell. As for a striker KB Darren Bent would be my choice but again with Keane and Berba looking likely to leave this is unlikely, so my knowledge of European Footballer is limited (as it appears is MoN's) maybe Podolski or Klose or as a risk Cisse.Wouldn't mind a cheeky bidfor Joe Cole if Barry goes... much better in the middle of the park. Now I am dreaming... I better get back to my usual realistic/pessimistic best.
fatloser
Blackburn have signed Robinson, answer me this how come that deal has been done so quickly, yet villa are still in talks with Friedel? unbelievable really!
johnmurphy3112
JM I believe its because rovers wanted a keeper in place b4 selling friedel
scoops
If Valencia are indeed in the ****** then surely MON should go and cherry pick asap! Miguel and Silva double swoop, oh yes please. Its getting hard to trust MON when it seems he takes so long to place bids and either has too much competition by then or misses the fudging boat altogether. Sorry for the frustration but I can't fudging help it.
holte ender 1969
sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo bored of this now
ric112
Ol' Arry has been talking about his transfer targets again I see. He thinks Kaboul wants to join Pompy and not Villa or Sunderland. How does twitchy kneck get away with talking about his transfer targets so much!!!!!
PBAVFC
Scott Carson seems to think that MON didn't sign him due to the fact that he wanted a keeper with experience. Nothing to do with his 10 mil price tag and that MON wasn't speaking to anyone from Scouseland or the Fact that he was one of the worst keepers ever to put on a Villa shirt and made Enckleman look like a God.
Villan444
I wonder the same thing all the time...he should be done for disturbing players that he can't even afford and can't go to Portsmouth...if he joins us or Sunderland, what are the fans going to think when Harry's been shooting his mouth off about how he wanted to go to Pompey, the guy's a disgrace. And with reference to the Friedel thing, we were given permission to talk to him when Blackburn had a BID accepted, so essentially we could talk to BF when they could talk to Robbo, and the time difference is clear to see...it seems as though Man City are sniffing around now. To me, that wouldn't be the worst thing, as I'd sooner take Joe Hart, the guy is future England no. 1...i know i know...we've heard that before coughCarsoncough but still...anyone, Vincent Kompany? Per Mertersacker? Paulo Ferreira or Belletti? Quaresma? Saviola? Milito? Let's set the bar high MON, let's at least see a few failed bids for these players instead of last ditch bids for Kaboul.
AstonMartinOneill
PBAVFC, first Rednapp was saying that the player was coming to VP, now he has changed his tune. Not sure if he's trying to play mind games with the player or he just can't keep his mouth shut. The media loves him so he could get away with what he wants.
Villan444
Kaboul to pompey now. This entire transfer window has been a complete shambles. We'll still have the smallest squad in the prem come kick off and god forbid a run of injuries through the team. Sort it out!
villain76
I thought Kaboul would be a decent signing when linked to us and would have liked us to get him. But I am really gutted that we may miss out - maybe its wanting what you cant have but I think he would be great for Villa. I just want us to start buying NOW!!! Really starting to lose patience with MON now!! Anyone want to tell me to stop worrying??? I thought we needed 6-8 players minimun - i think we will be lucky to see four in total.
deano.avfc
if kaboul goes to pompey and so does SWP (they sold muntari to inter) then i will start to feel a bit strange about our ability to get players. the only thing i will add is perhaps MON is too patient, or a bit slow? other teams have not been busy, but when targets go astray, you have to wonder..
leftfoot
Deano, why would you be interested in Kaboul? is it because we actually might buy someone or because he is an outstanding player that will improve our team? He is a very average player not my opinion but that of skysports stats, he didn't start too many many games in the last two seasons-so he couldn't establish himself in a team that is was renowned for bad defending last season! I don't know if I'm more annoyed at the lack of tranfer activity (although I believe there will be alot more action after tonight) or the fact that we are putting in late bids for average players.
johnmurphy3112
I thought Cahill should not have been sold - Kaboul is around the same age and similar potential. He is also better than Knight - so would be our third choice centre-back (also more flexible in that he can play along the back four) - and would only cost £3m - so why not???
deano.avfc
I agree about cahill, so why not try to buy him back? Im tring to be open minded about Kaboul but don't like him, I think there's better defenders out there, not sure who may be available but-O'shea, Distin, steven taylor, mcshane, scharner, and we should've made a massive effort to get richard dunne but too late now.
johnmurphy3112
Yeah, I didnt like the way Carson had to have a little dig. Enjoy your 1 season in the Prem! I agree with Villain76 - MON's so slow in the transfer market we will still have the smallest squad come kick off. A few injuries and we can kiss goodbye to the top six, especially with the white scum of Tottenham coming on strong.
PiperUK
Anyone remember how great the 70s were, no sky sports, no computers, just check the back page of the morning paper to see if any transfers had been done, 5 mins at the most just to glance through the back pages, now its sky sports ever hour, newsnow .com all day long, Vital Villa, etc, I even get up at 6 in the morning and check out the Villa, instead of checking on the children! my life is just a blur now, anyone else's life come to a stand still!
eltoro
Another player goes to Pompey instead of us ?.....hmm.....this Randy revolution is all bull to me !
