Arsenal Add Twist To The Barry Saga

Well this is a turn up for the books, after what seems like months of wrangling between Aston Villa and Liverpool over Gareth Barry, Arsene Wenger has, according to Shaun Custis of The Sun, popped up with an enquiry!

In the usual 'Sun speak' they say Arsenal have made a 'sensational 11th-hour move to hijack' the move of the Villa skipper to Anfield and claim that Liverpool were 'locked in high-level talks' yesterday negotiating the price.

The Sun claim that the Gunners haven't bid yet but would be able to offer cash and a player like Justin Hoyte who has been linked to Villa for some while now.

The report repeats what we all seem to know now, or at least what the press have told us all along, Villa have set their price at £18million but Liverpool want to pay £15million plus add-ons. If Arsenal bought him for the full fee he would be their record signing.

Personally I'd still like him to stay at Villa, unsanctioned interview or not, but can't make up my mind if that is likely or not if he isn't being allowed to train with the rest of the team! I've not seen any updates as to whether his ban from training remains or if that has now been lifted, would be a dodgy policy to let him get too unfit if we want top dollar for him surely!??!? Certainly with the limbo over the Liverpool situation, it looks like Barry's main hope is another top four team come in with the full asking price and as a London boy, albeit a boy-hood Spurs fan, maybe Arsenal will give him the escape route and Champions League football he seems to desire.

If he does earn us £18million after 10 years of sterling service, I must say we'd have got a good deal out of the Brighton & Hove Albion purchase!

Not true. Goes against everything Wenger stands for. Arsenal have better options in their youth ranks and besides Arsenal don't spend their cash. Although I'd take 12/13 mil plus hoyte

As a Gooner, I'd like to see Barry, I rate him highly. But this is ********* frankly, Wenger will but a central midfielder that is completely unknown for a curly wurly and a packet of lovehearts, he'll be brilliant and next season will demand his salary to be tripled and court a move to Barcelona. It's the Arsenal way.

Oh how I would like that to be true. Personally I agree with you Fear and hope he stays at VP, though I agree that MOn does not seem the type of person to accept him back. But if we cannot keep him, in the words of Kevin Keegan - i would just love that to happen!!

If Barry has to go and play CL football he would go to Arsenal with my blessing. Wenger is a manager that I respect immensely, Arsenal are genuine title contenders and they conduct themselves properly in the media and in transfer dealings. As long as we get the right money this could be the perfect solution for everyone except Arsenal who I doubt would spend 15-20 million on a 27 year old. More likely 5-10 million on a 22 year old.

I honestly can't see how Barry can stay at Villa after this summers episode. He has been far too vocal. The only way is if he makes both personal and public apologies to MON, The Club, and the fans. otherwise his time at Villa is untenable.

can't see gooners stumping up the cash. Has this been reported anywhere else or just the sun! Would be interesting if to see if barry turns down arsenal, which would prove his been tapped up by pool. agree with jonah think barry will end up staying.

Can't see Wenger spending that kind of money on Barry. He likes to buy cheap develop and sell high. Barry is already 27 his stock will drop in the next 3 years. As for youngjonah's comment about MON forgiving and forgeting. I can't see it myself. There is a huge difference between Patrik Berger's spat with MON and what Barry has done. As I see it Barry has publicly slated the club that has paid him for a decade. We talk about loyalty. Loyalty only excists while you remain loyal.

If the latest Express and Star report is to be believed then the Barry to scouseland move is now a done deal. Interesting how it concentrates the mind when it is reported, to be believed or not as the case may be, that Arsenal were showing an interest. It is a pity he is going and to Liverpool in particular. The way they have conducted themselves in all this is appalling and FIFA should discipline them (but they won't). No doubt the fat Spanish toad will say the ends justifies the means. It is all so sad, however I suspect that the reported 15m + Finnan will do Villa much more good than Barry will do the reds. Liverpool are on the way down and nothing will change that. Let us hope it is Villa who replaces them. We will certasinly be CL contestants within the next two years.

I can't see the e n s story being true. I mean to say 1. The completion of this saga has been imminent for about 4 weeks (no brainer there) and 2. didn't Villa turn down 15 mill? Finnan is worth 3 mil and Villa want the half now and half in 12 months? Smacks of lazy journalism to me.

From Barry's point of view, surely a move to The Emirates would be the far better option? With the move to Liverpool definitely appearing to be in the balance, no doubt we'll find out within the course of a day or so whether the Wenger interest is genuine, or mere media speculation. Well done to MON and the club for the way they handled the under-handed approach from Liverpool. We didn't roll over in the face of the Anfield clubs bullying tactics, and we are certainly the club to come out of this whole sorry saga with our reputation intact. Barry, we accept its time you moved on, make sure that that move is to The Emirates. You know that much makes sense.

The Express and Star are arguably worse than The Brum Mail when it comes to making up the false stories. Interesting to read MON's confirmation that the Liverpool deal is still no nearer completion. Where do we go from here? Like gappy65, I agree that Barry's position at Villa Park is simply that he doesn't have a future here. Too much water now passed beneath the bridge.

I honesy don't think Wenger is gong to bid for Barry. It was a nice thought thou. I also don't think Barry can stay at VP, that leaves Liverpool! BUT I feel this is where we need to stand firm. My thinking is Liverpool will hang around until the final week if not the final day to test our resolve, and try to get Barry at a reduced/bargain price . I just hope Randy and Co are prepared to hold out and not buckle. This could turn out to be white knuckle stuff!

I would much prefer Barry to go to the Arse rather than the scouse red scum!! I also think he would be more successful at Arse than the scouse. But I'm still not sure I want him to leave Villa, I want to see him back in training and fighting hard to win back the respect of the Villa management and fans!!
