Villa Romp To Pre-season Friendly Victory

Villa romped to a 6-0 win over Swiss side FC Wil 1900 and Martin O'Neill was delighted with the pre-season start. Our goals came with a brace from Marlon Harewood + contributions from John Carew, Nathan Delfouneso, Shaun Maloney and Wayne Routledge.

The Villa boss told the official site:

'It was very good, considering we've been back in training for just about a week. It was very encouraging and there were some very nice goals scored. You wouldn't want to read too much into it; maybe the strength of the opposition wasn't fantastic. But even so it was a nice venue and a nice way to start. It was nice to score a few goals but more importantly it was just good to get a feel of the pitch and a feel of the game to try and get back into a rhythm as quickly as possible because we've got the Intertoto game coming up.'

Adding, 'In normal circumstances I wouldn't be too bothered; we'd have a leisurely build-up to the season. But we have to get into competitive mode very early on this season. Whoever we face in the Intertoto, in terms of matches, will be much fitter than us, so we have to try and overcome that.'

How did the kids do? How did Routledge do? Was Salifou a class above his old team mates? So many questions!

http://www.ifutbal.com/videos/5289/wil-vs-aston-villa here's the highlights, perhaps the opposition were poor, but some of the inventiveness, carew and maloneys lobs, and youngs pace down the right for the second, all really well worth taking a look at.

Didn't see the game but saw the goals, and every one of the 6 were very good goals. It was also fantastic to see that Delfouneso has a strikers instincts, excellent goal made possible by his smart reaction.

Big Marlon starting as he no doubt means to go on. Personally I'm pleased that he didn't decide to up and off during the close season, although of course there's still plenty of time left for Stoke City or a.n. other to move in for him, and tempt him with the offer of a regular starting place. He didn't let us down last season, scoring goals when called upon, and showing the right and proper attitude during a time when things couldn't have been all that easy for him.

Will be interesting to see how we get on against tougher opposition on Saturday, when we face up to FC Zurich. All these friendlies of course really helping our preparation as we build up to next weekends Inter-Toto adventure.
