Villa Linked With England Winger Bentley

Looks like now really is time for action, with the Steve Sidwell signing imminent reports in the Mirror and the Mail today claim that Villa have also put in a bid for Blackburn's David Bentley.

Both reports suggest Villa have tested Blackburn's resolve with a £10million bid.

Hogwash! £10million? Lets face it, the £10m quoted would make no sense at all, he is a young and gifted England international and Blackburn have already said they don't want to sell one of their star assets and will only allow him to go for the right price. Much like the Barry situation for Villa though, Bentley has made it clear he would like to move on and once that happens, the players usually get their way!

Other reports are suggesting that Spurs manager Juande Ramos is willing to sell half of his team with Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Portsmouth, Sunderland, Hull City, Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers apparently watching with interest.

The report in the Sun claim says that Ramos is looking to trim down the squad massively with following teams after these players: Robinson (Aston Villa), Chimbonda (Pompey and Newcastle), Dawson (Newcastle and Hull), Lee (PSV), Malbranque (Aston Villa), Keane (Liverpool), Boateng (Real Betis), Tainio (Hamburg), Bent (Sunderland) and Ghaley (Blackburn).

Wouldn't mind us going for Chimbonda and Robbie Keane, then again I've got no money, don't own Villa and am not the manager!!!

There are signs that this could be a great summer i think Bentley would be a great addition. THE SLEEPING GIANT THAT IS ASTON VILLA IS STARTING TO AWAKE.

is it me or are all the clubs around us a little poor, Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs all selling to buy... possibly could be this summer where teams can break into the Top 4 and imagine how skint those clubs would be without finishing in the top 4 or thereabouts, surely their budgets ae based on them being in the champions league

If we were to get Bentley for say £12 mill added to the £5 mill for super stevie sidwell and then get rid of barry for £17 mill plus Finnan, that would be 3 excellent players in and haven't actually spent any money yet!! I know I know relax I'm getting a bit excited!

I agree shortshadyuk, teams such as Liverpool do seem to set their budget taking into account they expect to be playing CL football. But when it doesn't happen (and they won't be there forever) they'll be struggling to compete in a league which revolves around money. I reckon we've offered around £13M for Bentley, which is an ideal offer to test the water. Just don't want a bidding war between us and Spurs, regardless of the fact that we'll win it.

Lets all just calm down for a few moments. Even if we have bid for Bentley, Blackburn haven't accepted it yet. Even if they were to accept a bid from us, he still must want to come here. I don't think he would if any of the top 4 or Spurs wanted him, so lets all take a step back until something Official is announced.

WOW. Villa has made £10million bid for David Bentley!! Whatís going on here? How can they only bid 10mill for an England player that was one of Blackburn's best players last year? How can they bid so low? Can that be taken as an "insult" by Blackburn? Should Paul Ince be screaming to the press about this? Who leaked this bid? It canít be from Blackburn cause what would "they have to gain from this". Blackburn clearly have stated that his not for sale. So how can holy Villa do such a thing? Are they just trying to tap up the player cause he wishes to play in Europe? The least you guys could have done was wait a year before you do the same thing to someone else player. Why aren't Villa fans screaming at the top of their lungs about this injustice? pfft.

Klutch, was the 10mil bid for Bentley a fact or press speculation? I know the bid for Barry was a FACT and not speculation!
10/07/2008 23:38:00

Ya could be "press speculation" but before MON came out screaming to the press about Rafa and his "low" bid that was nothing more then "press speculation" also. Its pretty clear that the Bentley bid is more then just "press speculation" and even if it just a speculation it doesn't seem to bother Villa fans that your great manger is doing what you claim Rafa did to you guys. The point is you guys are going after a player Blackburn clearly doesn't want to sell. I don't really care how much the bid is, how did the press get a hold of the bid? Did Villa leak the bid? It can't be from Blackburn cause "what would they gain from this" so Villa MUST have leaked it, the same way Liverpool MUST have leaked the Barry bid. Maybe you guys leaked the bid "to try to get him on the cheep by unsettling the player". Will either way it doesn't seem to bother you guys as long as you get him, so please go back to congratulating MON for trying to get Bentley even though his club doesn't want to sell him
Report Abuse

As Nigel said - it's only press speculation, but Blackburn would obviously gain from letting other clubs know that bids were coming the hope of starting a bidding war with Tottenham, Everton, Liverpool, etc. That's blatantly obvious to anyone with even half a brain. Bentley has already come out and said he's leaving. At the time the Liverpool bid for Barry 'broke' in the press, Barry had been quiet on the subject. You're not comparing like with like - if you were, maybe you should take a look at Rafa's comments on Keane recently.

"but Blackburn would obviously gain from letting other clubs know that bids were coming the hope of starting a bidding war with Tottenham, Everton, Liverpool, etc. That's blatantly obvious to anyone with even half a brain." So when other clubs bid for your players and it's leaked to the press it's the other club's fault, when Villa bids for other clubs players and it's leaked to the press, it's also the other club's fault!!!! By the way YatesyVillain, I used that same argument to suggest that Villa might've been the source of the leak and it was shot down by Villa fans including yourself. What does that say about you?

gappy65 your funny guy but i would save that button of yours and give it to MON if i was you. See we might be "broke" but at least were being linked with quality players such as Silva, Keane and your captain Barry. While "rich" Villa is being linked with Anton Ferdinand, Paul Robinson and have bought the reject Chelsea player Sidwell. So before you start giving away your buttons for free you might want to contact MON and ask him if needs it for his next target. who knows it might help you guys land Ferdinand quicker.

Thing is Klutch, we HAVEN'T made a £10m bid. It is as simple as that. Also, if we had, same as Liverpool bidding low, I don't really see the problem. None of us like our best players being bid for but some of the arguments recently have been ridiculous, the footballers are all over paid and out for themselves, if I was a player I'd be the same, it is a career afterall!

Thankyou The Fear at least someone understands. I don't really care about this whole saga and tried to avoid it as much as I could but I kept reading such stupid arguments from both sides that I thought I would have some fun with it (being the transfer window is so boring) Barry is making a "career" decision and so is Bentley and ever other footballer around the world. I don't really care if Barry comes or not I like Xabi better anyways. Plus I don't really care how much your bid was for Bentley or even if there was bid all I know that mangers have their teams best initiation in mind and if they can get a player of the cheep great if not then they bargain for the best price. Mangers aren't hired to take every team feelings into consideration when they make a bid their hired to get the best results. thatís what MON is trying to do and thatís what Rafa is trying to do.

However I can not resist winding up these self rightous scousers who fail to acknowledge any involvement in the Barry saga! they endlessly quote that's how we big clubs do business. Well fear as I'm sure tou'll agree that's not how business is done. I have been in business for many years and I have never and never will be associated with business practices of this nature. Rafa's tapping again.....Keane this time...... " - July 11, 2008 .... Tottenham are furious with Rafa Benitez after the Liverpool manager admitted Robbie Keane was on his shopping list. The Guardian says Benitez has riled Tottenham by going public with his wish to bring Keane to Liverpool. Having already angered Martin O'Neill, his managerial counterpart at Aston Villa, with his persistent courting of Gareth Barry, the Spaniard provoked amazement at White Hart Lane yesterday by confirming his interest in their Irish forward."

Luckily I will have my Bentley to drive, That's David Bentley! I will leave you scousers to it now. It's no fun anymore your far to easy to wind up!!! I'm looking for a bigger challenge! In future Klutch remember this, just because Liverpool do something doesn't make it right and proper. So there is humility in admitting when your club was wrong to do something! They straetched the ethical boundaries with the Barry saga! They used the fact that footballers are greedy. But just because they exploited this trait doesn't make it right!

But good luck to you lot. keep fighting the good fight your showing the rest of the league how to act properly. I beg to differ Klutch, we waited for David Bentley to make a statement about his wishes to leave. So you are partialy right when you say we approached a player at another club.
