Who Should Be The Next Villa Skipper?

Martin O'Neill says he hasn't made a decision on who will be Villa's captain yet and will delay for a while longer.

He told the official site:

'There are quite a few candidates at the club and perhaps others not yet at the club.'

The ones most are talking about are former West Ham skipper Nigel Hokey-Cokey or Martin Laursen.

O'Neill added, 'There are a number of people on the list and Martin Laursen would certainly be one of the names I'd be thinking about. He was terrific last season. There are a number of people who would want it but there are a number of people who are on my list who might not want it. I haven't discussed it yet. There are quite a few candidates at the club and perhaps others not yet at the club. So that's something I'll look at further down the line.'

Or maybe the replacement for Gareth Barry will be from one of many (hopefully) new arrivals?

'We're looking to really bolster the numbers because we're right down in numbers at this minute. We need to strengthen and we intend to strengthen and we're strongly in the market for the players.'

Who would you go for? (I'll ask in our next poll but as we've only just started the Sidwell poll, thought I'd best leave it there a while!)

Yep, has to be Laursen of the current crop - only concern would be his fitness? Reo-coker is a good leader but may not be a regular in the team with Sidwell about...though they may go togther very well with Sidwell being the attacking midfielder and Reo-coker the defensve one - Petrov will be pushing for a place though...

Give it to Nigel. Best man for the job by far. His experiences at Upton Park and for the England under 21's will stand him in good stead.

i dont think were gonna buy barry, MON has priced him out of a move i think, plus were in for villa i think now, so money might be spent there. Barry might be staying, and i think he was a good captain for you lot, if he apologises, you should give back to him.

Any good opinions about who OŽNeill means when he says "there are a number of people who are on my list who might not want it". (no suggesting John Terry or Gerrard type unrealistic signings please) Maybe Laursen doesn't see himself as a captain and could do with MON being on record saying heŽs got the right leadership qualities.

Lauresen now, NRC later. Either, really. Both have the enthusiasm and the capacity for yelling that a captain needs.

Well, out of the current crop it's got to be Laursen hasn't it ? Although MON's teasing comments about "others not yet at the club" have really got me guessing. Look at the names we're currently linked with: Milner, Bentley, Robinson, Miguel, Ferdinand...none of them an obvious choice for the armband. Does that mean a big surprise-signing is in store ? Someone completely and utterly off the radar ? A real jaw-dropper of a signing ? Someone like,

also not a fan of giving it to someone not currentl;y at the club anmd i strongly doubt MON will do that, despite his comments

i'd give it to reo coker. I think he's going to be a regular fixture in the side for a long long time and has no issues with fitness. It is pyschologically bad to have your captain missing and i wouldn't want to give it to laursen only for him to end up getting a 4 month injury. Take away the concerns over fitness and i'd give it laursen for the next few seasons but for me it has to Reo Coker. He was captain of west ham and england U21's for good reason and i can see him being an england regular with time

Agree UTV. Niger Reo-Coker is far and away the best option. Laursen is a candidate I guess, but really it has to be NRC.

I think Hokey Cokey is an up and coming captain. Yes it's pychologically bad for the team to have your captain missing through injury, but it's also pychologically bad when your captain is sent off. NRC needs to curb his attitude a little on the pitch. Determination and aggression YES, confrontational NO. He will mature over the next couple of seasons, until then it must be Martin Laursen.

it seems pretty clear to me that Laursen is the captain, MON wants him to be
