Villa Youngsters Join Tour Squad

With squad numbers at what must be near to an all time low, Martin O`Neill has drafted in 6 young players into his pre-season Swiss tour squad.

Villa currently have one first team goalkeeper, and no right-back, even make-shift ones are hard to come by, and O`Neill, ahead of his 'significant additions` will rely on youth / give the youngsters a chance (delete, depending on how you see it) as Villa jet off to the Euro 2008 host nation of Switzerland.

The 'Young Lions` called up to the squad include a second goalkeeper, as only Stuart Taylor remains from the 3 senior stoppers that the club started the 2007/08 season with. First team squad trainee Nathan Delfouneso is joined by fellow academy stars am Williams, Marc Albrighton, Elliott Parish, Nathan Baker and Zoltan Stieber.

Villa face FC Wil 1900 (Moustapha Salifou`s old club) on Thursday, before facing FC Zurich two days later.

Villans on Tour: Taylor, Laursen, Knight, Davies, Petrov, Reo-Coker, Gardner, Young, Agbonlahor, Carew, Harewood, Salifou, Routledge, Osbourne, Maloney, Delfouneso, Williams, Albrighton, Parish, Baker, Stieber.

As that picture suggests, Stuart Taylor may well be right to feel somewhat baffled at such a squad.

a 21 man - and boy - party. As a matter of interest, who is the other keeper? Surprised that Clarke is not included - is he away with an England team? Also Forrester and Bannan. Would have thought they would be there too instead of some of the others who I have not heard of.

shocked that bannan an especially forrester are not flying out, has MOn done his scouting within his own club yet? I was looking forward to hearing of forrester getting a hat trick from midfield

There is nothing like getting a team prepared for preseason, and this is nothing like being prepared.

Stiebler & Williams are older than the others that were mentioned. Bannan & Forrester are still like 16/17. Parish is the goalkeeper, seen him a few time and he looks well frankly rubbish. Albrighton & Baker I'm not sure about Baker was good from what I saw of him, Albrighton is a hug the line right winger, that's about all I know.

Has MON gone on tour, or is he staying at home to tie up 'numerous' transfer dealings?

15 first team (excluding Davies and including Bouma) players is scary.

You win nothing with kids... no I really mean it we'll win nothing! Lets hope we stay injury free at least until we replace the players we have (and will) lose this year.

i think the young players that are involved are from positions where we don't have anyone, bannan isn't involved because he is a left or attacking midfielder when we already have a few in the squad, and steiber is a bit older and has that bit of experiance that bannan doesn't have

it'll be great experience for the youngsters, good to see them going and will in all probability get some pitch time as well. Hopefully by the time they return we'll have a few more players in the squad.

I knew our squad was small but when you list them, like above, its scary how small it looks. Come on MON this is not the squad anyone wants for our 1st intertoto cup game...!!!!

I went to the airport this morning, because I thought by asking nicely that I would be in with the chance of a game. M'ON told me not to panic because Sidwell, Foster, Wright Phillips, Finnan + a couple of others would soon be on board. Now before anybody quotes me, I am joking. I never went to the airport and I never spoke to M'ON. No doubt it will still be in the papers though because I am sure the press get all their stories from Vital Villa.

So who is our left back on tour? Will that be Reo Jokers new position? We all know he can't play right back!

You all can't seriously be worried about weather or not we lose a friendly or two against weak teams. Pre season is meaningless. I feel confident MON knows what he's doing. I'm excited these boys are getting a chance.

Pre-season is far from meaningless soonerfan61, I have to take issue with you on that. It is anything but.

Good experience for the younger lads, it wont do them any harm at all. Just disappointing that we dont have one or two new quality reinforcements jetting out there to be in the action from day one. Particularly pleased to see Sam Williams in the squad. He's coming back from a serious injury, obviously getting back to where he was pre 2007-08. He's got potential. Pity young Adam McGurk isn't also fit and raring. That kid would well and truly have been knocking on the first team door by now, if that serious injury hadn't curtailed his progress.

Does seem to be a meaningless tour for the sake of selling our brand in Scandinavia.
