Robinson Move Imminent

Reports in the London press tonight suggest that Spurs goalie Paul Robinson will be a Villa player within the next 48 hours.

It is being reported that Spurs have officially accepted a 5 million bid from us for the 28 year old former England goalkeeper.

With permission it is understood that Robinson held successful preliminary discussions with O'Neill earlier this week and received a guided tour of Bodymoor Heath.

No doubt Robinson would've been impressed with the managers plans for the club, and especially our investment in the training ground.

With the signing of Gomes, Spurs have paved the way for out of favour Robinson to leave, and it is believed only the small print formalities now stand in the way after a fee was agreed.

If the move comes off it is expected that Robinson will be on around 45,000 a week and would most likely be a 4 year contract.

I hope if he does move to you, you give him the love that the majority of the attending Spurs fans still did. Will never forget the rapport the bloke has with the fans and if I had it my way we would be able to get the Robbo of 2 years ago back and not spend money on a new GK. If he signs, support him and you will have a good GK.
A lot of people on here think he's terrible.
i no players dont become bad over night but im not convinced its a confidence thing with robbo. i think he is an exception to the rule! ta very much for taking him of our hands!
matt i think that was half the problem mate. us lot singing 'englands number one' continusously gave fatty delusions of grandeur.
I really hope he does well for you guys. We all love Robbo at spurs and i for one am sad to see him go. He will become an instant favourite up there. The thing with Robbo is he needs his confidence re-built and I don't think he will ever get that back at Spurs. Will be an excellent signing for Villa and I hope you all do well next year
Well thats the thing, everyone has an opinion. Mins is he can still be a top GK if he has the right mentor and for the media to lay off him for a while. The best thing for Robbo would be for another english GK to make a couple of howlers so he's the next flavour of the month
suffered a terrible loss of confidence after the england airshot but before was a good asset for us and relationship with the fans second to none - we will all wish him well if he goes
he's a goal scorer, that s what we need a goal scoring goal keeper
Good Luck Too Robbo and To Villa, Top bloke Robbo and Villa a decent club! MON is just the bloke to get Robbo back in business!
Shropshire Yid
I don't believe for one minute that it was all down to Robinson why Spurs leaked so many goals. Confidence is a factor and as a goalie it helps if you have it (confidence) in the defenders in front of you! I certainly think MON will build him up very quickly and he will return to his best form in no time. Having the likes of Lausen and Davis(when fit) will definitely help him.
Will be interestingto see the reaction (sharp intake of breath) when he drops his first clanger. One thing that i think he will get is time and support from MON....Desperate Dan played in every game he was eligible to last season despite some very mediocre performances. I think this will be a very good signing for 5m and wish him every success at Villa. Cannot really recall too much but does he come successfully for crosses?. Because if he does and can command an area whilst limiting the errors then he will do for me.
good luck to him, he was a decent keeper and hes gone to a good club, just a bit low on confidence
i should have said going
I like Robbo and Welcome him to VP.
Unforunately my view is all good keepers still make mistakes - some let it bother them, some don't. Those that don't are potentially great keepers (with Sprake, James and Schmeichal all dropping the odd clanger but then saving the next 20 shots). Others most obviously Enkelman, let mistakes get to them and lose all confidence. Some like Carson are ok but just not good enough. Robinson showed that he has bad spells and losses of confidence. arrogant strong keeper never do that. Why can't we get Boruc. He looks and is immense?
Carson was quality... he made some huge saves I would rather him than Robinson
do vampires like crosses fatloser? and nigel, its wasnt all down to robbo. with no defensive midfielder to close down and the opposition knowing it was robbo in goal, players were shooting from 30 yards pretty often....and scoring! im not being funny we had more than our fair share of quality, unstoppable goals scored against us last year. probably half the candidates for goal of the season were scored against us!
I don't think quality is the right word for carson last season, he was so low on confidence by the end it was unbelievable - rubbish with crosses, against Bolton he nearly punched into his own net! I think MON can definately get the best out of Robbo and make him fulfill his potential as he was once an england regular. 'tis all about confidence.
Ne one got a link to the story above about the tour of Bodymoor Heath ?
Chuffed about this, good keeper and like when he was at VP earlier in the year has a good rapport with fans as shown by good luck messages from Spurs fans on here - credit to them, don't quite think i'll be doing the same with Barry!
No worse than Carson, half the price and if MON sorts his head out he'll be back as Englands No.1, after all he made an England captain out of Gareth Barry!
he will get his confidence back under mon, and be worth 20m in no time
You don;t have MON to motivate this player back into Englands number 1 shirt! Only a season ago James/Carson couldn't touch him for that spot, whats to bet he's their in the not to distant future!
I think Paul Robinson would be a quality signing for Aston Villa, and the 5 Million fee for him would be an absolute bargain. Just think for 5 Million, Villa will be getting, - An experienced goalkeeper, who will be better and make less mistakes than the rookie keeper last season,( no disrespect to carson, he was ok but not good enough. ) - The best keeper Villa will have had in 8 years since David James in 2000, lets see Robbo better than enkelman ( thats for sure ), better than Postma ( Remember him ), better than Sorenson, and better than Taylor, ( Sorry to say that taylor, as you have not been given much of a chance. ) - And lastly an England Goalkeeper, i mean its not all the time you get an England keeper costing only 5 Million, and once he gets rid of his confidence problems ( which every goalkeeper can have ), that Martin O'Neil can sort out in no time he will quickly become a Villa and fans favorite. IMO, Tottenhams LOSS, Aston Villa's GAIN. One Final point though, 4 year deal fine, but 45,000 a week, a bit much, more like 35,000 IMO. YES, MARTIN another Englishman, keep them coming.
villa for ever
Good.....can we have barry for exchange??? you guys can have Chimbonda & Robbo
Klinsi - I'd rather that than sell him to Liverpool
I agree with supermansfoot, but unfortunitly it won't happen as Spurs have the same issue as us, no Champions league for Barry.
Hope this is crappo I really dont want him to replace the last crappo keeper we had.
I like robbo he can get back to his best with us.
Everyone thought buying James a couple of seasons ago was a bad idea. Look how that worked out for Pompy. I see it happening with Robbo, the boy just needs a new start.
Robinson is a good keeper, oneill will soon restore his lost confidence, will prove to be a good signing, especially at that money..
Great move for both parties. Should help revive Robbo's career and certainly a step up in class from Carson.
great move. He's still very young for a keeper.
I make no apologies for doing a copy and paste from an earlier article. So some of you may be reading this again. I can not believe we are even having this debate. Robinson has a good kick and errrr that is it. His ability to dive for shots straight at him and make them look like good saves is remarkable. However when he genuinely has to dive, he usually gets no where near it, and the only times he does, the ball gets parried straight back into danger. He can not control his defence. His command of his box on free kicks and crosses is that of a Sunday league player. It is nothing to do with confidence, he is woeful even when playing at the top of his own very low standards. People say M'ON can restore his confidence?? How do you work that out?? He never restored Carsons confidence after his Croatia blunder, infact it got worse. Why would it be any different with Robinson? He was truly awful at Leeds, but brilliantly well marketed by the club and his agent, to ensure Leeds got top dollar during their firesale. Have a look at the 6 goals Spuds conceded against us last season (might as well look at the other 60 odd goals as well + God knows how many in the the previous 2 seasons) and then say you would welcome Robinson in goal for us. I think not. If he wasn't dropping crosses, he wasn't coming for them. His command and positioning of his defence for free kicks was not even Sunday League standard. He is truly awful. 25 of the goals conceded by Spuds last season would have been saved by almost every other keeper in the Pemier League. We are all entitled to opinions but I am certain those that like Robinson, have not studied the goals conceded by Spuds since his arrival. He was unfortunate with the miskick against Croatia (it could have happened to any keeper) but since then the spotlight has been on him and he has proved beyond doubt, that he is not up to the task as a Premier League keeper, let alone international one. Signing Robinson will hold this club back for years. We should not be going for the goalkeeping cast off from a club that concedes as many goals as Spuds have since he has been in goal. We should be forcing the hand of a club who doesn't want to lose their keeper, in the same way that Redscouse are doing with us with Barry. Foster, Boruc, and Friedel should all be on M'ON's wish list. The only wish list that Robinson should be on is ours and that means wishing he doesn't get any where near our club. As a final point, I have had conversations with players who have played with and against him and ALL of them think that signing Robinson would be a bad move for Villa. What the fans think is one thing but not to be recommended by his peers is another.
i for one think he is a good signing and well have a great rapport with us fans. O Neil will get his confidence back this is a done deal and expect him to sign on friday. No others this week but next week or week after i know but its O Neils way.
the voice of doom and gloom more like...
voiceoftheholte, "He was truly awful at Leeds, but brilliantly well marketed by the club and his agent, to ensure Leeds got top dollar during their firesale. " That was about as well researched as the rest of the drivel that you wrote...he cost spurs 1.5 mil...hardly top dollar...Robbo is a good goalkeeper and all of that nonsense you were spouting was mindless conjecture from someone who clearly thinks he knows more than he actually does about football.
Move imminent..............not the first time i've heard that this summer. nothing is ever imminent when villa are involved. Transfers that take other teams a week seem to take us 2 months
Good signing i reckon if we sign Guzan aswell. Both can push each for the no1 jersey. MON can surely get more out of him that Ramos, Mclaren and Spurs old manager Popeye.
Industrial and AMO it is about opinions but before you start having a dig, please confirm that you have seen the dvds showing the goals conceded by Spuds in the last 4 years? If after watching them you still say you would like Dropinson in goal then I will go and phone for the men in white coats. Do not take my word for it, just watch the dvd's. He is truly awful. Can you also enlighten me why your views should be more relevant than players who played with and against him. The only people to be saying he is a good keeper are O'Deary (God help us) and Spuds (who do not even want him as 3rd choice). And can you honestly say you would prefer Dropinson over say, Friedel, Green, Foster or Boruc? Dropinson is no better than Stuart Taylor.
voiceoftheholte u have never played football a decent level then cos if u did you would be able to see that Robinson is a very good keeper but the extent on how well he plays depends on his confidence like most players, his not the best in the world but very very good he will prove you wrong and start havin sum faith in O Neil.
voiceoftheholte, can i just apologise for being so definitive, i must have been in a bad mood when i wrote that, i appreciate it's all about opinions here, and we're all friends. I do think Robbo is a good goalkeeper though, and i don't think that so many goals can be attributed to his own failures...Carson was poor this season, and from what i was thinking all throughout last season, Robbo would have done better in almost every instance...he has quicker reactions, is more agile, is more composed and has experience...when looking at it purely from a point of progress, we had Carson, and we can now get someone better for half of the price. I would have loved to have got Gomes or Akinfeev, but that's not how MON operates...I do believe that having a former England #1 is a good thing though, there is something about a group of englishmen that will spark a great deal of collective heart.
AMO. Time will tell. Astonsteve, you are right on that one, I haven't played at a decent level. However I do mix with those that do and have, and they do not rate Dropinson. Leave my opinions to one side, why should your opinion be better than those in the game?
Im not saying my opinion is better than those in the game at the top level, but from the people who i know and talk to who are in the game at the VERY TOP LEVEL opinion is very high on Robinson altough he is very much a confidence player like most footballers you are at your best when ur fitness and confidence is at its best.
i was merely pointing out that everybody is so negative all the time... instead of getting on his back why not put some faith into him and see how he gets on. If he screws up then fine you can goad him to the hilt, but he hasn't even signed yet, wait for him to screw up first!!!
I do like Robinson but I think Rob Green should be the GK we are looking at. He is the most under-rated GK in the league and with him I feel we would gain at least 9 more points next season.
45,000 a week????!!! For a goal keeper? He'd better be fu*kin brilliant for that.
voiceoftheholte and Col8 I fully agree Robinson is a bad option. I dont admire his distribution as think he tends to kick it as far as possible without considering that short options help retain possesion. The previous discussion about this had many more mixed opinions from spurs fans, one concluded that Robinson is incredibly stupid and is incapable of improving his game. I agree. Think it is unreal how many goals spuds concede with Robinson simply standing watching the ball go in the opposite corner. Boruc please
MON hasn't actually admitted being interested in Robinson so all we have to go is the media. Surely we've all learnt that most of what the media say is drivel and seeing as we are also being strongly linked without about 6 other keepers I think discussing this is premature. I hope we sign Guzan, a player we definitely are interested in
Re; Guzan I think if he was going to arrive it would have been confirmed by now, rumours suggested hed only be eligible for a work permit if he played all three end of season friendlies for US. He only played twice in these.
voiceoftheholte excellent analysis, he's rubbish keeper, and our game would become so one dimentional where he'd hoof it up the pitch, he'd be great in the championship, and i really don't think we are intrested in him, its just most london papers are spuds linked and they always help them with links to players and such, if you notice that they get linked with top class players, which are almost laughable. UTV
Is it imminent? Is it all media speculation that we are interested in him? Why are we dragging our feet if we indeed want him as our new number one?
Admit I'm not a Robinson fan, far from it, but with few quality keepers out there and available, we are faced with few options.
I have never rated him. I think you would be much better off with Scott Carson.
