'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Eventual New Bid Rejected

The club have released a statement on the official site, rubbishing reports of a 17 million bid for Gareth Barry.

Earlier in the day many in the media published stories surrounding a 'take it or leave it' offer from Liverpool. Bith club's rubbished these rumours.

Later reports of a 17 million bid have been branded inaccurate by Villa.

The statement reads simply:

'The club have received a renewed offer from Liverpool for the player but that still falls well short of Aston Villa's evaluation, and has subsequently been rejected.'

Gareth Barry would do well to realise the club's standpoint on this. It is irrelevant if he 'desires' to move on, he is contracted to us for another 2 years.

He will not be going anywhere whilst Liverpool fail to meet our valuation.

Whilst that remains the case, whether his comments in the News of the World were from his own mouth or sanctioned via a third party, he would do well to remember you only burn bridges after you have crossed to the other side.

Setting light to the relationship he has with Aston Villa, our fans, and the manager whilst he is sitting in the middle of the bridge would be considered suicide and stupidity of the highest order.

We don't need the money, and as much as i'd like to get shut of him sooner rather than later, the consequencies of selling him to Liverpool before at least January would be detrimental to Villa. We will retain the name 'feeder club' and will be strengthening the club we're trying to catch. F**k him, put him on the beach and forget about him. Then we can rebuild.

That's the way to deal with it MON and Randy. I can't help thinking that if the old regime we're still in place then Barry would have gone by now. However, this just proves how much we have moved on under new ownership. I think it's great that we are no longer seen as easy pickings for the so-called big four.

@ric112 - saying he wants to leave Villa is not a disgrace, but it is a disgrace the way GB has gone about saying he wants to leave. Olof the Great said he wanted to leave, but did it with respect and that was reciprocated by the fans who gave him a good send off.

I cant actually belive Barry has said what he has, that M'ON has done nothing to persuade him to stay!!! M'ON and Randy held talks with him, and was going to make a decison after the England games, which he said he WANTS to leave Villa for Liverpool. There Barry, you have made your decison, so if you really want to leave Villa, then why would you be offered a new contract . He is just being bitter because of M'ON stubbornness over the fee he is asking for., and fair play to Martin...all hail M'ON. He has given Villa 10 years of brilliant service and thankyou very much, but that doesnt mean the club will beg him to stay when quite frankly he would probably reject the improved contract knowing the Rafa is after him. The club is a team and success will come as a team, not because of one individual.

Villa fans, If Barry is the type of player you all think he is then he could've used the new Webster rule and bought back the remaining two years of his contract after the season ended, which would leave Villa with only around 4.2 mil in compensation. He didn't, which tells you something. Something happened between Barry and O'Neill since the season ended that lead to Barry saying what he said, which was out of character as many of you said initially. Slate Barry as much as you like, but O'Neill isn't totally blameless in this matter.

"Under the rule, any footballer aged between 23 and 28 is entitled to walk away from a club, so long as he has served three years of a four or five-year contract." Barry has only served 2 of the 4 years. Rafa is to blame not MON. He is trying to build something whilst Rafa is trying to dismantle his CLOSEST rivals Spurs and Villa, no not Manure and Chelsea you deluded scouser.

Ok, my mistake, but that means he can leave next summer with Villa only getting one year compensation, 2.1 mil. Is Villa willing to take that risk? By the way, there is an 11 points difference between us and Manu, nine points between us and Chelsea, while Villa is 16 points behind us, and Spurs a whopping 30 points behind. Who's closer again?

And look how many games we blew. Check the table, it's far more likely that we or another in the chasing pack will catch Liverpool than you will of catching Chelsea or Man U next season. And eys Villa will take that risk because money isn't an issue.

We blew our fair share of games also. We drew five games at home after scoring first. If we won those games that would give us 10 extra points. Not to mention our reserve side that drew away at Birmingham, our draw against Man City away, our loss against West Ham away etc...

If Villa lose money on Barry out of principle then it is a victory for decency, honour, loyalty etc. We have given our sponsorship monies away this year (and are promoting a charity ) and will have a team of mainly English/British players with a thouroughly decent honest manager and Owner. I am proud to be a Villa fan.

All teams have thrown points away. I don't see the point in saying we're going to finish above you or we're going to finish closer to Man U and Chelsea. Personally, I think if United hold onto Ronaldo they will run away with the league because Chelsea will struggle with the new manager, Arsenal are in turmoil and Liverpool are too reliant on Torres and Gerrard. I'm not going to say that this will result in any other team breaking into the top four because we're all still quite a distance away but there may just be a surprise.

JohnDoe - Now I’m not an expert on buying out of contracts but it’s a lot more complicated than just paying up your contract and joining another club. There are different elements to the compensation,. For example some compensation has to paid with regards to any transfer fee that may have been paid for the player. Which wouldn’t be much in Barry’s case. BUT there are also sanctions as per Article 17(4). Part (iii) is interesting. Article 17(4): IN ADDITION to the obligation to pay compensation, (i) sporting sanction shall be imposed on any club found to be in breach of contract or found to be inducing a breach of contract during the Protected Period; (ii) it shall be presumed, unless established to the contrary, that any club signing a Professional who has terminated his contract without just cause has induced that Professional to commit a breach and (iii) any club found to have induced breach shall be banned from registering any new players, either nationally or internationally, for two Registration Periods. He could terminate his contract and join you next year but unless he shows Sporting Just Cause (Article 15) I don’t think you’d fancy the 2 year transfer embargo?

JohnDoe - If that stat was used to try to prove that Liverpool are a bigger club than villa - its rubbish! Statistics can be used to prove anything - 78% of people know that!! Some counter stats for example: Seasons in the top flight: Villa = 97 Liverpool = 93 Goals scored in the top flight: Villa = 11766 Liverpool = 10554 You could argue it all day but the truth is theres not much in it is there? I would imagine both sets of fans expect to be fighting for 4th spot next season.
