Robinson To Hold Talks + Spurs Fans Opinions

According to a report in the Daily Mail today, Villa will hold talks with Spurs and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson this week as he looks to leave White Hart Lane.

Tottenham are apparently due to sign PSV keeper Heurelho Gomes. According to the report Spurs want £5million for the 28-year-old who we tried to sign when he moved from Leeds in 2004 (when David O'dearme was our manager). He ended up moving to Spurs instead for £1.5million after Villa apparently pulled out of the move.

Villa certainly need a keeper or even two as at the moment we only have former Arsenal shot stopper Stuart Taylor.

When we featured the rumour a week or so back, we got plenty of feedback from the Vital Spurs boys, here are some of their comments:

I feel sorry for Paul Robinson, he has been unfairly blamed for a freak goal against England, and is suddenly a calamity keeper. I feel his time at Spurs may well have come to an end, but I fully expect him to return as a great keeper, he is a strong charactor, who is a very good keeper, though one out of form and low on confidence, but if the whole world tells you you are useless for long enough you will eventually believe them............ oxfordspur

Take him. One of the worst GK's in the league. Real Deal

He is a good keeper, he just needs second chance. Poncho

I think his decline had something to do with confidence, so it might be case of having a fresh start. But I think the real problem is that he is stupid. Most of the goals he concedes are down to his decision making. He makes too many wrong decisions, whether it's coming of his line when he shouldn't or staying on his line when he should. He has a sudden rush of blood to his tiny brain, comes flying out to the corner of the area and then he's in a world of confusion. He's a great shot stopper and can claim crosses well (if he gets in the right place), but this isn't enough. A good keeper is a clever keeper. dickybran

Reckon he'd be good at villa, we don't want him, but he needs a fresh start. BaleOut

He had a bad season but not a howler. So would any 'keeper playing behind Dawson and Kaboul. I hope he stays at Spurs, he hasn't become a bad 'keeper overnight and played a massive part in us finishing fifth twice. His 'mistake' in Croatia was a one-off, a freak, it could happen to anyone and there was no way of stopping it. He could have taken a touch by why should he - he is by far the best kicker in the league. He made a mistake against Villa last year, along the same lines as Cech against Turkey the other night. He was lobbed Seaman-Ronaldinho style against Reading and that was it for club as far as big mistakes go - no different to Keane or Berba missing a sitter really. For England his only big mistake came against Germany in a friendly. The goal against Russia was not a mistake, he saved the ball and their player reacted more quickly than our slow defence on the night. Mac made him a scapegoat as he knew the media love to blame an England goalie for our failures. He is a great 'keeper, signalled by the fact that we offered him a seven-year deal three years ago! He's the Juande

I'd love to see Robbo do well and regain his england #1 status, but i really have lost patience with him at the lane. He's definitly down on confidence and maybe that is all it is, but i think its time for him to move on for both his and the clubs good. Also, if anyone can get him back to form, its MON. He'll certainly be a smart purchase if this ever happens. Dave the Yid

In chat rooms he gets slagged ,but i've never known him slagged at games ,maybe a few groans after yet another stupid goal conceded but nothing more,he had superb support at spurs and we even helped get him in the England team by constantly chanting at old Sven.Lots of things can be blamed for his demise but spurs fans aint one of them.Still he was good in his first season for us and if a move and a change got him back to his best he'd be good for ya,but on the other hand the very fact he's gone from a spurs fan fav to a can't get shot quick enough might say it all, don't give it the 'thats yid fans' either coz you lot will be worse to him than we ever was if he carrys on finding new ways to concede goals. good luck anyway and i would certainly wish him well parklanebert

Just to add, Robbo found his form after being dropped and benefitted from playing behind King and Woodgate, looked a lot better. Yes his confidence has been shot to pieces but a rest and a new season could be just the ticket. He is, in my opinion, much better than James or Carson, but then I have watched him for four years and not the others. What people must remember is all 'keepers make mistakes, look at Cech a few days ago and in the Carling Cuip Final, if he comes back this season he will be a much better player for it. If he leaves Spurs I hope he goes to Villa and not 'Boro or where ever as he is good enough to play for a big club with big expectations. Although obviously I hope he remains our number one as I think he will ram a few people's words down their throats. He's the Juande

Sign him, and in years to come Spurs fans will look at him the same way Villa fans look at David James and wonder what could have been! azreal13

Take him please!Maybe MON has the man managment skills to help him get his confidence back,he obviously hasn't the mental strength to do it himself,Spurs fans have been over loyal to Robbo,if he wasn't former England no.1 that wouldn't be the case i think,he cost us a hell of a lot of points over the last season and a half, his positioning for free kicks and distant shots have been appauling and his lack of confidence spread to an unexperienced back four,Dawson can shoulder some of the blame, but not Kaboul, thrown in the deep end,the kid got a baptism of fire. Spurs Fan - I think it is time for Robbo to move on. He was snubbed by Ramos in favour of Radek Cerny, snubbed by england managers, these guys ain't mugs, they must snub them for a reason. Although Spurs look like getting Gomes, i still think an english (or british) keeper would be better at communication with our all british defense.

Spurs fans - oh no, this is going to turn into a 'who's the bigger club' thread as usual. In fact, I've read loads of different websites recently, and on each one there's guaranteed to be spurs fans engaged in wars of words with other clubs fans about how spurs are a big club. Why is that do you think?

12 months ago I remember reading something where a load of spurs fans were going mental because someone wrote an article say Robinson wasn't up to much. The abuse this bloke got was unbelievable. Spurs fans were saying if they ever met this bloke they'd give him a good kicking for writting such crap, then they went on to say Robinson was in the top 3 or 4 keepers in the world, I think it was on Football365. Personally though I'd rather us buy Boruc, he'd cost a fair bit but he's been one of the best keepers at the Euros.

"we got plenty of feedback from the Vital Spurs boys" Then you quote me Fear! I would just like to publicly state that I am a Villian through and through. Still think signing Robbo would be a good idea, though. Just needs a boost in confidence, if only we had someone at the club who was well known for being a great man-manager.... hold on a minute! :-)

And no other clubs fans are to blame in this Olaf?! Two to tango and all that. But while we're on the subject Spurs are the biggest club in the world! Joke. But to get back on subject (it wasn't a spurs fan who went off topic for the record) I think Robbo will do well at another club, confidence has been shot so perhaps MON can put an arm round him and get him back where he belongs. Good luck Robbo!

I would have him. £3-4mil would be fairer. But £5mil is okay for top keeper who lost his way.

The Euros isn't a good judge of a players abilities. we've seen that in the past. Boruc is a good keeper but i think he was on top his game this summer. Robinson would be a great signing for us. Him and Sidwell would go along way to calming us all down!

Olaf do you think its because idiots like you invite it? I'd go in to a rant about how you can't fill your stadium even though its dirt cheap to buy a ticket at Villa Park but that would be playing in to your hands....

As for Robinson, he just needs a move in my opinion. A new club and renewed confidence will see you with a very good goalkeeper.

Jog on Craig, you yids don't need an excuse to talk up your minor past greatness and inferiority complex coming from living in the shadows of the Arsenal. We are both top 7 clubs in England of all time but we don't go on about it 24-7.

olafthegreat, are you not the one "turning it into a who's bigger" debate by, erm, writing exactly that before anyone's even said anything?! That's like turning up naked at Hampsted Heath at 3am and saying "oh no, I've a feeling I might get bummed here". You ask "why is that?" at the end - it's because of people like you mate, not us Spurs fans. Granted we have our fair share of nobbish fans but then so do all clubs. 90% of Spurs fans are realistic and will tell you that we don't expect to finish in the top 4 but would like to be there or thereabouts, and we also don't assume that the likes of David Villa or Eto'o will be joining us because we know it's all paper b*ll***** or agents using our name to get their players a pay increase. Write something constructive next time.

Why bring it up then? No Spurs fans have on here. Neither have they tried to talk up how big we think our club is. The accusation we talk up our history is pathetic too. If it does ever come up though you can guarantee it is not a Spurs fan who first mentions it ! As it goes, you're right we are both in the top 7...actually top 6 cos you can chuck Chelsea out !

As for Robbo, I think he will be a very good signing for you, as would Chimmy if you still want him. Both players are good enough for both our teams but sometimes a change is good, especially in Robbo's case as I think he is going backwards at Spurs. With the right arm around him though and a fresh start I see no reason why he can't do a James and be good again. He's still relatively young remember. Chimmy and Robbo for Barry in a straight swap? I'm kidding before you all jump me. i'd expect some money to come our way as well for such a deal :)
Fat Dan
Im happy enough with him, by the sounds of it Boruc would be a good solid choice, but I always thought highly of Shay Given and Paul Robinson

Both Spurs and Villa are big clubs and both are so much bigger than Chelsea. Both clubs could be top four clubs with the investment Chelsea have had in the last five years. They only wish they had the history of clubs like Villa and Spurs.

Olaf, seems it's you trying to turn this into a 'who's a bigger club thread' - just fort he record, there's nothing to choose between us IMO... anway Gutted to see him leave, but I think the same goes for Lennon as well, they need a new challenge, some new surroundings, something's happened to these players and it's not the first time a promosing or talented player at Spurs has lost his way, I find it very worrying!! I hope to go we're not turning into Newcastle 'the career ruiners'!!

That's a bit harsh Craig. Don't think Jol can be held responsible for kids going backwards at the lane. It's always been that way so there must be something fundamentally wrong within the club. We're always promised they'll be the next Zidane or the next Ronaldo but invariably they all turn out to be the next Iversen.

I'm not Jols biggest fan, in fact I can stand the bloke but thats not for a Villa site. I do think Jol is to blame for a lot of players going backwards over these last few seasons...if not directly him then the staff he had working for him. I know we've had this problem in the past and again I think thats down to having poor managers. Hopefully Juande will prove me right.

To back that up, you've lost your goalkeeper & right back and soon you'll lose you captain. I'm sure most Villa fans appreciated how much you needed to strengthen before these players left so now you have to buy even more players. I like Villa and hope you do well, don't fall in to the trap most of our fans fell in to though and expect to do well after a decent season. You have a good manager but your squad is woefully short of numbers and in many areas quality. MON wont be able to work miracles with that lot for ever. He needs to buy some quality but at the moment the quality you have seems to be going out of the club.

I'd be happy to see Robbo get a second chance at VP, but £5m seems about £3m too much for a player that they are looking to get out of the club

If you read the posts I think you will see that we aren't actually banging on about whose club is bigger etc. What you will see is Olaf stirring things up and doing a runner and you have all fallen for it. Well done Olaf, mission accomplished. Back to topic then, as for the elusive 4th it could be a stretch too far. It would be nice to take some points off these top 4 though and reign in the gap.

People who play football do say jog on Fat Dan although it isn't part of my daily vocabulary. Would you rather I swore and it was bleeped out? No doubt you are part of the percentage who make Spuz fans in general seem like cocks and not cockerils. We have had many a debate with Yiddos and I understand why Olaf said what he did and I don't think it needed the agressive retort that you have given. Nice to see some of your fellow fans speak some sense today, just a shame that you are incapable of an intelligent discussion without resorting to playground talk from the safety of your parents computer, no doubt in your parents house skiiving off school whilst they are at work paying for your miserable existence you drooler.

I love how the topic started with "please don't let this turn into a who's club is bigger?" argument, and it's now all about the notion of who's fans always have to start this argument. Everyone's as bad as each other, we're just football fans. Robbo, i'd like, he'd be decent...i always think a goalie is only as good as his defence, but Robbo's decent. Just take him and stop the bickering everybody.

Craig, we are glad to lose our goalkeeper (in fact we have lost 2 with Carson and Sorensen going.) I agree that MON's magic will only work so much and we do need to buy plenty of players but we got into 6th by playing with the smallest squad and you guys have one of the largest squads and only finished 11th although I know its not as simple as that with the new manager etc. You have such a large squad and quality in depth with a proven manager that you must be more optimistic than previous years when you have dreamt of finishing 4th. Take away Gerrard and Torres from Liverpool and I would say that your squad is better than theirs. They are definitely catchable.

Villain444, what's aggressive about suggesting Olaf wears his mum's underwear? It's not like I said I was going to beat him up with a cricket bat or anything. Though I'd love to. I was just trying to lure him out of his sandpit so I could have a bit of banter with him, that's all. Anyway, I'm with him his mum now and she's wearing no underwear so that's how I knew he must have it on instead. Fair enough with your 'jog on' defence though, not words I've ever used on a football pitch personally but then I let my goals do the talking. I wish I WAS at home skiving mate, but unfortunately prostitutes aren't cheap these days so I work quite hard. Anyway, this is much more like it - someone not afraid to bite back. I like your style! Olaf you fool, are you listening?

Anyway Villain444, just to prove that I can commit to intelligent conversation and I'm not just about sandpits, prostitutes, women's underwear and beating people with cricket bats (though all of those things do play a massive part in my life), I'll reiterate my point from earlier that I think Robbo and What's That Coming Over The Hill Is it Chimbonda would be excellent signings for you which would suit both parties. Robbo to get his confidence back and hopefully his England spot, and Chimbonda because I think he's p!ssed off too many Spurs fans and needs someone like Martin to tell him he's special and not someone like Juande who no doubt ignores him in the corridor. On his day he's awesome. I'd be happy with £10 million for the pair. Would love to nab Young off you - the boy's class - though realise that ain't gonna happen. Good luck for next season folks. I'm as glad as you lot must be that Birmingham went down. Never liked them or that pr!ck Bruce (even though he left them).

MON will deffently get the most out of Robbo and its a real shame that Spurs are losing such a loyal player in Robbo as he will really get your fans going. Good luck lads on next season but i doubt you'll need it.

How does a topic about Robinson holding talks end up with a spurs fan telling us he likes prostitutes and womens underwear??? haha :)

Sorry AstonMartinOneill, i'll have to disagree with the old 'a keeper's only as good as his defence' routine. I thought we were actually quite defensively sound last season. It seemed to be a catalogue of goalkeeping blunders which eventually brought our hunt for 4th spot to an end.

Robbo was great at Leeds, if MON could get him back to that standard he would be a good signing. PS what a difference a season makes last year spud fan's were giving it large about how they would be challengers how wrong was they.

An explorer hacking his way through virgin rainforest in central Africa, continuing his thirty year search from a lost tribe of pygmies. All of a sudden he comes to a clearing, in the middle of which is an enormous dead elephant, and a tiny wee fellow wearing naught but a bit of string round his waist and a big grin. "What a magnificent prize!" says our hero, "Did you slaughter this noble beast?" "Not me kill, my club kill" says the wee fellow. "My goodness!" the intrepid explorer ejaculated, "That must be a jolly big club!" "Not really" says the hunter, "about thirty of us" ***************************************** Chim chimerney chim chimerney, Chim chim charoo Who needs Wayne Rooney when we've got Carew?

I can not believe we are even having this debate. Robinson has a good kick and errrr that is it. His ability to dive for shots straight at him and make them look like good saves is remarkable. However when he genuinely has to dive, he usually gets no where near it, and the only times he does, the ball gets parried straight back into danger. He can not command his defence. His command of his box on free kicks and crosses is that of a Sunday league player. It is nothing to do with confidence, he is woeful even when playing at the top of his own very low standards. He was truly awful at Leeds, but brilliantly well marketed by the club and his agent, to ensure Leeds got top dollar during their firesale. Have a look at the 6 goals Spuds conceded against us last season (might as well look at the other 60 odd goals as well + God knows how many in the the previous 2 seasons) and then say you would welcome Robinson in goal for us. I think not. If he wasn't dropping crosses, he wasn't coming for them. His command and positioning of his defence for free kicks was not even Sunday League standard. He is truly awful. 25 of the goals conceeded by Spuds last season would have been saved by almost every other keeper in the Pemier League. We are all entitled to opinions but I am certain those that like Robinson have not studied the goals conceded by Spuds since his arrival. He was unfortunate with the miskick against Croatia (it could have happened to any keeper) but since then the spotlight has been on him and he has proved beyond doubt, that he is not up to the task as a Premier League keeper, let alone international one. Signing Robinson will hold this club back for years. We should not be going for the goalkeeping cast off for a club that concedes as many goals as Spuds have since he has been in goal. We should be forcing the hand of a club who doesn't want to lose their keeper, in the same way that Redscouse are doing with us with Barry. Foster, Boruc and Friedel should all be on M'ON's wish list. The only wish list that Robinson should be on is ours and that means wishing he doesn't get any where near our club. We are all doooooooomed I tell you, if he does.

Signing Robinson is a route that I hope we dont take. voiceoftheholte sums up my feelings and opinion perfectly. The guy is a walking disaster, a liability, and as I have said on the forum at greater length, we should be setting our sights elsewhere. He is simply nowhere near good enough.

Cheers for the support Glensider. The only chance we would have with Robinson in goal, is if every match ball is sponsored by McDonalds or Mars. He would probably catch (and then eat) everything then.

I think for £5 Million or less Robinson is a good keeper and worth a shot......Remember Carson was gonna be £10 Million!!!!
