Chelsea Midfielder Deal Edging Closer?

Lisa Smith of the Post has an exclusive today claiming that Villa and Chelsea have finally agreed a 5.5million fee for Steve Sidwell. It was widely - and most inaccurately - reported last week that a fee had been agreed. The report claims that Sidwell wants to talk to new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari first before deciding on any move.

Sidwell’s agent, Eric Walters, is quoted as saying a fee had 'informally' been agreed. However there is the problem that Sidwell wants a pay off from Chelsea if he does move.

His agent said: 'Steve feels Villa are a very, very good club and would offer a very good future for him but he has also again insisted that he is no rush to leave Chelsea. There is a new manager coming in and he would at least like to meet with him over the next couple of weeks to discuss his future in person.'

Adding, 'There is also compensation. Steve has three years left of his contract and is entitled to some compensation if Chelsea agree to part with him. He has reiterated he would be happy to stay at the club and fight for his place but they are now suggesting they want him to go and that is the club’s behest.'

Just a question of whether the lad wants to get rich and splinters on his backside OR join the revolution. Think MON will give up if he doesn't show any willing or hunger after a week or so. (at least I hope he has a plan B set up)

Is Sidwell destined to be like Routledge, Maloney and even Davies and spend the first 6 months on the bench? Not sure I want a player who is obviously more concerned with money than playing football, lets not forget he snubbed us for Chelsea last summer.

Not very encouraging - a case of not burning any bridges. All Scolari will say is you will get your chance and that will be that. Next please.

I don't understand why he thinks he will get a chance under Scolari. Chelsea have been linked with plenty of midfielders already and Scolari will surely go with Brazilians and Portugese, as this will be his comfort zone. Does Sidwell not realise he was signed because Chelsea were losing players to the African Cup of Nations and he was available on a free. I think he would be a good signing for us but what a numpty.

In the Brum post, it claims that his agent and him were having a good laugh about all the speculation and claimed that any deal was far from done!!!!

YJ It hurts to admit it, but the majority of players would snub us for Chelski, can't really blame the lad for that, he'll come.

Eircol the 'exclusive' comes from the fact they have someone who actually knows what is going on (his agent) saying a fee had been agreed. If you are saying the fee had been agreed before then I know 100% you are wrong Eircol and I know my sources are totally bang on.

Sounds to me like Mr 10% wants him to get what he can from Chelsea. I think we will sign him but it could drag on a little while yet !! It must be frustrating trying to get players in when greedy agents are holding all the cards.

So how was it half the country new the figure of 5.5 million over 11 days ago? Ask your source about the discussions villa had with chelsea in january? I have read a report from the agent stating he has made no comment on his client....

The press first said 8m then 7m and then it went down to the 5 - 5.5m There have been loads of prices quoted and even now no one in the press will truly know what fee has (if it has) been agreed because Randy etc don't work like that. They are too professional to be talking to all and sundry what is going on. I don't need to ask my sources because I don't really care, I only ever care when the players sign and are in the shirt. This 'inside knowledge' is just a scam, we had it all last year as well. A few well placed guesses and then we get the 'told you so'.

Has anyone seen the reports about Robinson on Newsnow. If we do sign him I just hope he can return to the form he showed at Spurs prior to last season.

I am not sure I want Sidwell at the club, not into players who are motivated by money. I know they all earn alot and want to be paid loads but at least most of them are also motivated by winning things and being the best they can be. Do we need a player who doesnt care about taking us to the next level? At least with Barry we have someone who is ambitious and wants CL football above all else!!

I cant believe Eircol is still banging on despite being completely discredited with his "2 signings" last week prediction.

aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhgggggg!!!! Can we stop criticising quality players who have done nothing wrong evne before we sign them please. I know it's all about opinions but if we are honest, few players are real dyed in teh wool fans of any club and will go where they either get paid the most or can progress their careers the most. that is the truth even if we fans don't like it.

Villan of the North I cant agree more. Some villa fans seem to have developed a superiority complex of late an nobody is fit to wear the shirt. Two points here 1. Marlon Harewood, once derided and ridiculed by the majority of you commenting on here right now but of late a true clubman, proffesional, great squad player who has the right attitude to want and stay and fight for a place. correct me if i'm wrong but sidwell played more games and minutes than harewood last year yet he is a mercenary and harewood the model pro? Harewood has got about as much chance as getting in to our starting line up regular this season as sidwell has for chelsea. MON threw Luke Moore and Maloney on before he'd even entertain the idea of Harewood last year. So tell me what the difference is please? Secondly, no matter how much anyone earns how many of you would say "no thanks I'll leave that 3 million you owe me"? Players do earn a lot of money but Sidwell probably signed a 3 or 4 year contract committing himself by Law to the club and to my knowledge never has he complained publicly he's just got on with his job something that we as villa fans apparently appreciate (when its a villa player). It isnt greed its Law simple as that. And whoever mentioned not to forget that he turned us down last year is a plain stupid comment. Financially we couldnt compete due to wage structure nor on a football level could we, there would be no choice to make. Are we to never approach a player that has already turned us down because "if were not good enough for you then you dont get another chance"...ridiculous comments all round.

Reading between the lines, it seems to me that Sidwell is merely holding out for a substantial pay-off. If this is true, dose it make him purely motivated by money? I don't believe it does! Who in their right mind would turn down the chance of making an extra couple of million for the sake of not declaring they wish to leave their current club???

Maybe it's the fan in me talking but I would play for Villa and I wouldn't care about my pay packet one bit. Makes me sad how money is the main motivation in so much :(

Cant believe that the proposed Sidwell deal is as clear cut as the media would suggest. We're surely going to face serious competition for his signature, possibly from the likes of Everton, Manchester City, and maybe even Newcastle United? I hope he moves here, I think he will be a very good signing, and fit in well, but I obviously wont breath easily until the deal is signed and sealed.

Always the chance of course that Big Phil will want him to remain at the club, at least until his qualities have been fully evaluated by the new regime.

industrial_musical, I think it's quite possibly the fan in you, as I would like to think that I also would play for free. However, the reality is Sidwell is not a fan, I'm not sure if money is the main motivation though, I think that maybe Sidwell is just playing it cool.
