Aston Villa's Tuesday Transfer Rumours Round Up

Several papers have Villa linked with out-of-favour Everton and England striker Andy Johnson. The Daily Star and The Sun both claim we are set to bid around 7m for him with Wigan, Middlesbrough and West Ham also interested.

The Steve Sidwell rumours rumble on with the Daily Mirror saying his move has been delayed as the former Reading midfielder wants a pay off from Chelsea. They claim there is a verbal agreement between the clubs for a 5million transfer but that Sidwell, who moved to Chelsea on a free last year and is paid around 50 000 a week, wants 2million settlement.

The Daily Mail say that we have tabled a 15million bid for Blackburn Rovers midfielder David Bentley and the bid has been rejected. The paper claims we were supposedly in pole position to get the 23-year-old England winger after opening discussions with his advisers, but talks stalled last night.

The papers are also full of the West Ham defender Anton Ferdinand's link to Aston Villa today. Reports suggest we are about to bid 6million but the Hammers want 8million. Meet in the middle, 7m, there job done! I'm good at this bargaining you know, especially when it isn't my money! The Mirror quote 'a source' close to West Ham saying the club 'would not be interested in any figure under 8m. They don't want Anton to go but his agent has not been in looking for a new contract so something might happen.'

If any more rumours show up I'll update this round up later!

Is it just me or does Ferdinand seem to be slightly overpriced? I think we could do better business elsewhere, cos from what i saw of him last season (when he wasn't injured) he made a few major mistakes. Still hoping Sidwell deal gets done soon and i'm not a great fan of Bentley, would much rather have SWP. Now, if we can get Van De Vaart and maybe Darren Bent i'll be a happy Bunny

Andy Johnson? NO NO NO NO NO NO. for a start he has no definitive skill e.g pace or height. and he played for Birmingham which means nobody will initially like him. Why are we being linked with strikers when we need a GK and a RB more than anything????????????????

4 signings I would be happy with. Andy Johnson would have to pull his socks up though, not been the player Everton fans had hoped for.

Johnson is ok, i would prefer to have bent to be honest, younger, pace, good finisher, gets into good positions too. Anton Ferdinand is a sod! he was taunting us after the game and is the most ugly mug i have seen and would not like to see him in the back four for Villa and at 8m you can buy a SERIOUS international defender for that figure... MON talks to not wasting money... why hand more cash to West Ham, we paid 4m too much for NRC (I think hes an ok player), 3m too much for Harewood, 8m for anton would be a complete farce

Johnson is awful he can only score penalties, I know we are losing Barry but surely we someone else can step up for them? Darren Bent is the one we need, he has pace power and he can finish, him and carew would be frightening together! Anton Ferdinand...hmmm...he would be ok for back up but that is it really he wont come near the laursen davis partnership also 8mil is ridiculous, I may be wrong but didnt WHAM put him on the transfer list anyway? We shouldnt be paying that much for him at all!

Agree with Tez86 - Davies and Lauren are our centre-backs - we need back up cover in Knight and another but 8m is too much. That money should be used on a top RB - go for Miguel and spend the 10m on him and know we are sorted in that position for a number of years. Darren Bent ticks all the right boxes for a partner for Carew. Spurs wont want to make too much of a loss for him but a 12m bid could keep rivals at bay and get a run at him. Go for it.

I dont know what people see in Bent, I don't really rate him he couldn't get a sniff of the team at spurs and at 16.5m you would be expecting 20 goals plus, I cant see him getting 20 goals unless he was in the championship, Gabby and The Hare are better than him if we buy a striker they need to be better than we've already got and Bent and Johnson aren't even close, I agree with MotoPhil GK's and RB's are priorities, then midfield playmaker, the CB, then RW, then LM and then a striker......phew!

Gotta say Bent is quality, end of. He excelled in a very poor Charlton team and that weren't luck. Unforunately he got bought by a pie-eater with no bottle who should have played him once he'd stoppped dodging Irish and Bulgarian teddies. He would definitely improve out squad.

I'd personally be happy with Johnson or Bent - both proven premiership goalscorers. Johnson may have had a bad run, but he is a great natural finisher. Would take Aston over the pair of them though...

Dean Ashton would be good, then we only need David Villa to really confuse the commentators.

Starting to hope (and pray) that there's one or two deals now nearing completion, particularly a 'keeper, a right full back, another striker, and a certain Steve Sidwell or someone very much like him. Then we can hopefully start adding some numbers and depth. Its the keeper position that worries me, there not being much out there who are both capable and available. I wouldn't be unhappy if any of Ferdinand, Johnson, or Bent moved to VP, they are all capable players on their day.

No talk of Seb Larsson yet. Guess I'll have to give up on him. Shame that. Looks a quality player to me, but needs out of St Andrews to really flourish.
