Does Gareth Barry Deserve His Testimonial?

Our latest poll has been suggested by Wayno.

He wants to know your opinion on the Gareth Barry issue and more importantly his testimonial.

So, does Gareth Barry deserve his testimonial?

Wayno said: 'I know thinks have been on the back burner for the time being but I would like to pose the question, After all he has been a loyal servant and deserves the chance to say goodbye properly – at the end of the season he looked embarrassed and the event was overshadowed by our farewell to Olly.
That said if it goes ahead I would like to see him donate a significant proportion of the income to acorns

Let me know what you think

Wouldn't be possible if he left. Fans wouldn't turn up surely? He does deserve a testimonial if the proceeds go to charity (which he hinted they would) but only really if he stays. Not because I'd hold any (or not much!) ill will for him departing, just I can't see that a player moving on would get enough fans of his former club wanting to go and cheer him on?

No player deserves a testimonial. They get paid extremely well for doing a job they love. After ten years of service at the local factory would you get any reward from the management? Barry is no different from any other player as in he gets a good salary already.

Of course if the funds went to charity it's a different matter.

Agreed footballers get paid too much nowadays it was different 20yrs ago,and if Barry moves on I cant see the fans turning up a shame because their are some deserving charities out there.

If GB even took a testimonial it'd feel like a kick in the teeth if he left. Not saying he doesn't deserve praise for the loyalty he's shown up to now, but leaving for liverpool and expecting a testimonial would certainly leave a bitter taste in the mouth for many.

We would probably end up playing against Liverpool and Gerrard and Rafa would not leave the stadium in one piece. Oh sorry thats our third game of the season.

Yeah the atmosphere at Villa Park when Liverpool come to town will certainly be interesting. Also I think he deserves it, but only aslong as he donates the funds from it to Acorns.

I think that if he has it in his contract he deserves it, part of his expected income and what he does with it is his business. If he donates to charity, more power to him but it's none of our business and niether should it be. Of course, if he leaves then his contract will be over and there will be no testimonial, exactly as happened with Hendry

mostly agree Votn but guess it is the business of those paying for tickets whether to buy them based on if it is to make a rich player richer or for charity (mean on all testimonials not just Barry as times have changed from when they were needed for players when retiring etc).

Last testimonial I went to was Nigel Spink's, players were well paid then too but not like now. I have been at work for 29 years and would have to work for another 40 years to pick up what Barry gets in a year there is no way I will ever go to his or any other players testimonial nowadays, if they p**s it up the wall thats their problem.

Agree with JF. Fans surely wouldn't be interested enough to turn up once he's deserted the claret and blue, ten years of great service to the cause or not.

I cannot see it being greatly attended by Villa fans who now feel let down by him wanting to leave. Testimonials are no longer what they used to be about anyway. Footballers earn more than enough money without needing the cash form a testimonial. The only way he would get one is if he donated the lot to charity.

I've lost so much respect for him over how he's handled this whole circus act. He can shove his testimonial where the sun (no longer) shines. Get him a nice leaving present, a varse or an ornament of some sort to put up in his new council flat in Liverpool. Barry you are yesterday's news, now Martin Laursen will be our golden boy. So ***** off.

Cant see many people supporting a Testamonial for a player who has left the club, I certainly would not be falling over backwards to give money to a player in a Liverpool or any other club shirt.

Harsh I know, Myleftboot, but i'm sick of hearing about the whole thing. If we held a testimonial and know one turned up, how would Barry feel then? I don't think he or the club should risk that. I understand that players move on nowadays, but the timing of this could not have been worse. There is an appropriate time and manner in which to leave a club that you have spent ten years with, and this was neither. I'm sure Olly Mellberg would tell you the same. Yes, he gave us 10 years but we gave him 10 years also.

So if the general consensus is the same as here, then 22,790 people will attend his testimonial if he stays, 10,320 if he leaves, 9,460 won't turn up regardless and 430 don't know what year it is. Thats a complete guestimation but I reckon if none of this had come up there would've alot more wanting to go.
