Spurs Keeper Looking For Villa Move?

According to the Express & Star today Spurs and England keeper Paul Robinson would like to move to Villa Park.

The Tottenham keeper, who had a howler last season for club and country, has been linked with a White Hart Lane exit and has often been linked to Villa, especially since we haven't taken up the option to sign Scott Carson from Liverpool.

Villa currently only have former Arsenal keeper Stuart Taylor to go between the sticks as Thomas Sorensen has now been released.

According to the report Middlesbrough are also keen on the 28-year-old but Robinson would prefer a move to Villa Park and the chance of European football.

There are now quotes to the story, not even a 'source close to the player', so hey ho!

Must admit, despite falling out of favour and having what looked like a crisis of confidence, there is no way he has all of a sudden become a bad keeper so maybe a change would be as good as a rest for him. At his age he is still hitting his peak surely?

Another report claim that both Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur are watching Robert Green’s situation at West Ham.

do we get his pies thrown in as part of the deal?? i really don' t know about this one, he could do witha fresh challenge, but be an improvement on calamity carson

Real Deal - you sound a little bitter!! He's a good keeper, not happy at WHL. Change will do him good, fresh start, rejuvenised.

Robinson is a quality keeper and I would be happy to see him at VP. My main concern is that he is a confidence player, and although I'm sure a clean slate at villa would do him good, what happens next time he has a nightmare? Still, I'd deffo sign him up.

I think his decline had something to do with confidence, so it might be case of having a fresh start. But I think the real problem is that he is stupid. Most of the goals he concedes are down to his decision making. He makes too many wrong decisions, whether it's coming of his line when he shouldn't or staying on his line when he should. He has a sudden rush of blood to his tiny brain, comes flying out to the corner of the area and then he's in a world of confusion. He's a great shot stopper and can claim crosses well (if he gets in the right place), but this isn't enough. A good keeper is a clever keeper.

I think robbo will be good, goalkeepers hit their prime at 31... so has plenty of time in him yet. and to cap it off which manager can rejuvenate and get the most out of any player?? MON.....

He had a bad season but not a howler. So would any 'keeper playing behind Dawson and Kaboul. I hope he stays at Spurs, he hasn't become a bad 'keeper overnight and played a massive part in us finishing fifth twice. His 'mistake' in Croatia was a one-off, a freak, it could happen to anyone and there was no way of stopping it. He could have taken a touch by why should he - he is by far the best kicker in the league. He made a mistake against Villa last year, along the same lines as Cech against Turkey the other night. He was lobbed Seaman-Ronaldinho style against Reading and that was it for club as far as big mistakes go - no different to Keane or Berba missing a sitter really. For England his only big mistake came against Germany in a friendly. The goal against Russia was not a mistake, he saved the ball and their player reacted more quickly than our slow defence on the night. Mac made him a scapegoat as he knew the media love to blame an England goalie for our failures. He is a great 'keeper, signalled by the fact that we offered him a seven-year deal three years ago!

I'd love to see Robbo do well and regain his england #1 status, but i really have lost patience with him at the lane. He's definitly down on confidence and maybe that is all it is, but i think its time for him to move on for both his and the clubs good. Also, if anyone can get him back to form, its MON. He'll certainly be a smart purchase if this ever happens

in chat rooms he gets slagged ,but i've never known him slagged at games ,maybe a few groans after yet another stupid goal conceded but nothing more,he had superb support at spurs and we even helped get him in the England team by constantly chanting at old Sven.Lots of things can be blamed for his demise but spurs fans aint one of them.Still he was good in his first season for us and if a move and a change got him back to his best he'd be good for ya,but on the other hand the very fact he's gone from a spurs fan fav to a can't get shot quick enough might say it all, don't give it the "thats yid fans" either coz you lot will be worse to him than we ever was if he carrys on finding new ways to concede goals. good luck anyway and i would certainly wish him well

leelindsay- don't think Realdeal is bitter mate and the reason Robbo's not happy is because Ramos dropped him after a couple of clangers rather than just persevere like jol. He's not playing thats why he's not happy end of,he seemed pretty happy when he signed a 10 year contract ,so by all means blag yourself that its some massive coup but real deal was telling it as it is

I think Robinson just needs a change but would much prefer Rob Green
notthedougellisstand
Just to add, Robbo found his form after being dropped and benefitted from playing behind King and Woodgate, looked a lot better. Yes his confidence has been shot to pieces but a rest and a new season could be just the ticket. He is, in my opinion, much better than James or Carson, but then I have watched him for four years and not the others. What people must remember is all 'keepers make mistakes, look at Cech a few days ago and in the Carling Cuip Final, if he comes back this season he will be a much better player for it. If he leaves Spurs I hope he goes to Villa and not 'Boro or where ever as he is good enough to play for a big club with big expectations. Although obviously I hope he remains our number one as I think he will ram a few people's words down their throats.

He will certainly do, with one keeper I would gladly take any one and robbo isnt a bad one. Could very well be our number 1, lets get him and another youngster we can send out on loan and use in the cup. MON will make sure he is in shape. Also get him to have a word with Darren Bent before he comes.

He's the Juande-Ram down their throats !yeah i bet so many spurs fans would be so gutted if he stayed and was the dogs nuts..wtf the facts are though that he's not and Ramos doesn't rate him spose he's wrong too?if it all turned around for him with us everyone would be pleased wouldn't they?you say playing behind daws and kab did it but maybe if they had someone behind them that didn't flap at crosses, stay on his line other times and generally not know what he was doing they might of been better coz lets face it you never know whether he's coming or going. He takes to steps left to dive right and has been very poor for ages.I can only hope you are blagging these fans in the hope that they will be happy to sign him, otherwise i'm sorry but you talk absolute drivel imo

I think Robinson would be a decent shout for Villa. With the Spurs fans talking about him being a good keeper just lacking confidence, may I say the same about Carson. Before Croatia, he was in very good form. after Croatia, he was dithery and indecisive in all aspects of his game. Carson, like Robinson, needs his confidence rebuilding and Scott is only 22 remember.

Parklanebert: if he's as bad as you make out how the hell did we finish fifth twice on the trot? And in particular stay in fourth for sixth months? By the way I am not having a go at Spurs fans - obviously I am one - we have been nothing but supportive, I am on about the media! Ramos doesn't rate him? But picked him for a Cup Final over Cerny who had played the last ten games, brillliant move by Ramos and had the desired effect! You make out that he has always been bad, yet the Park Lane, not one to hold their thoughts on players if they are not performing, sings our favourite song as loud as ever every time he plays.

If they sign him, I suggest Ramos tells all the players to shoot from long range when we play them. Maybe not Zokora though ;o)

Thats what I love about football its all about opinions !! I remember when Leeds had to sell and being gutted that he chose Spurs and we got Sorenson. He was prob best around at time and still is when on song but when a keeper screws up it is hard to shake off that 'DODGY' tag.

I remeber the holte giving him some stick when he was in goals at that end, 'englands no 3!' and that and he took it pretty well maybe he has a soft spot for villa.

His confidence is long gone and it would take MON 2 years just for him to be able to get out from under his covers at home in bed let alone walk out the front door or go anywhere near a football pitch. As HtJ says anyone playing behind Dawson would do the same but in interviews last year he was looking over his shoulder as if he was on the run from the FBI. Even MON can't save him.

Stig: We didn't give him a hard time at all. But it came very difficult/embarassing to carry on singing "Englands No.1" anymore. Admittedly we were all slagging him off behind his back, but the media attention had a lot more to do with it.

I have to say that I am not sure MON could get his confidence up and Judging from his blind loyaylty to Carson last season if he was number 1 which I would presume he would be, he would get a long run in the side. Our coaching of Goalkeepers does not fill me with great hope. Eric Steele has gone now , not sure who MON brought in but he did not seem to inspire Desperate Dan.

He's a fat keeper who doesn't dive, can't catch or command his area and gets beaten from 35 yards on a regular basis. Had too many chances has to go. For Villa's sake it should be to Boro.

Do Villa really need a keeper who may or may not be at his best when he arrives. Would any other top Premiership club be looking to bring Robbo into their clubs? Thought not, Villa with ambitions of a top 4 place in the league will never achieve it with substandard players like Robinson, Saliouf, Routledge and Gabby. Jesus we still had Patrick Berger in the side last season..... Let go move on bloody hell Villa get a grip.

col8 what? gabby? Robinson is World Class and probably would have got into any Premier league team 2 years ago (maybe not Cech at Chelsea). If you think Gabbi at the age of 20 is substandard then you really need to watch a few games with him playing a little more closely. I agree he is no finished article, but he creates so much trouble for other teams its unbelievable.

Hey what on earth's wrong with Gabby? I bet you were'nt saying that on rememberance day last year when he scored the winner at the Sty. Gabby is a local boy, he's getting better and better. I reckon another season and the likes of Arsenal will be after him.

He is probably the worst keeper in the Premier League. He can not command his box, his shot stopping is poor and his communication with his defenders is non existent. Lets not have any of this 'it's all down to confidence'. He is poor and the reason that Spuds have conceded so many goals over the last the last three years is almost totally down to him. He dives to make simple saves look difficult and gets nowhere near shots that other keepers would save with their eyes closed. Please lets pray that this is a bad rumour. I have had several conversations with people in the game and they wouldn't pick him for a sunday league team. Stuart Taylor is probably not quite good enough to take us to the next level but is a more than adequate second choice. However he is ten times better than Robinson will ever be.

The reason spurs conceded so many goals was down to their shocking defenders and Jol's tactics. I have a friend who is a spurs fan and he says I quote: Without Robbo we would have been in the S**T... I hope we sign him personally.

Take him please!Maybe MON has the man managment skills to help him get his confidence back,he obviously hasn't the mental strength to do it himself,Spurs fans have been over loyal to Robbo,if he wasn't former England no.1 that wouldn't be the case i think,he cost us a hell of a lot of points over the last season and a half, his positioning for free kicks and distant shots have been appauling and his lack of confidence spread to an unexperienced back four,Dawson can shoulder some of the blame, but not Kaboul, thrown in the deep end,the kid got a baptism of fire.

I agree with col8, the jury is still out on Gabby for me. Think MON has played him in every game over the last 2 years and he hasn't exactly scored a million goals. Without pace he would never get in the team and he doesn't even run around constantly pressing defences like Kuyt for Liverpool or Rooney and Tevez for Manure. Still young though and will support him when he wears the shirt but would have been better if he had someone to challenge him for his place. The England call-up was a joke.

I feel sorry for Paul Robinson, he has been unfairly blamed for a freak goal against England, and is suddenly a calamity keeper. I feel his time at Spurs may well have come to an end, but I fully expect him to return as a great keeper, he is a strong charactor, who is a very good keeper, though one out of form and low on confidence, but if the whole world tells you you are useless for long enough you will eventually believe them............

Gabby is a player who will keep adding to his game and will get better and better for the Villa. Agreed he needs more competiton, i reckon M'ON will sign a pacey forward to compete with Gabby, dont see a physical striker coming in as Carew and Harewood are doing a decent job.

Have a look at the 6 goals Spuds conceeded against us last season (might as well look at the other 60 odd goals as well) and then say you would welcome Robinson in goal for us. I think not. If he wasn't dropping crosses, he wasn't coming for them. His command and positioning of his defence for free kicks was not even Sunday League standard. He is truly awful. 25 of the goals conceeded by Spuds last season would have been saved by almost every other keeper in the Pemier League. We are all entitled to opinions but I am certain those that like Robinson have not studied the goals conceeded by Spuds since his arrival.

We are all entitled to opinions but I am certain those that like Robinson have not studied the goals conceeded by Spuds since his arrival.

This talk doesn't thrill me, far from it. I hope that he's not on MON's radar.

Mind you, having seen a lot of Guzan these past two weeks, he doesn't thrill me either.

I cannot beleive we have people slagging off Gabby. Some people make me feel sad to be a villa fan sometimes.

industrial musical opinions is what Vital Villa is all about, I have in the past defended Gabby but think Villa will not achieve the heights they wish to attain with him up front. Given the choice between Bent, Defoe or Gabby who would you pick?

col8, reference your previous comment^ about the top 4 not picking them for their starting line up. In case you hadn't noticed, we aren't top 4 (yet). Therefore it would be naive to suggest we should be signing players of their calibre, at the moment. Realistically we cannot compete with them for those kind of players. That's where people like Gabby come onto their own, Arsenal were sniffing around only last year! He has massive potential and it would be typical of the Villa to let him go on the cheap and then we end up buying him back for 18M in 2 years. There is MUCH more to come from him.
