Liverpool Legend Says Barry Doesn't Need To Move

There was an interesting report yesterday in the Birmingham Post by Rob Tanner which quotes former Liverpool legend John Barnes as saying Gareth Barry doesn't need to move from Villa in order to realise his Champions League dream or to cement his place in the England team.

The former England star says it was different in his day and he had to make the move from Watford to Anfield to push his credentials, however he feels that Barry can do all he wants in his career at Villa.

He explains that the Watford fans knew he had to be sold but adds 'Aston Villa is a much bigger club than Watford and have Champions League aspirations, so it is a much more difficult decision for Gareth than it was for me. On the plus side, money talks these days. Watford may have said they didn’t need the 900,000 Liverpool paid for me and they wanted me to stay, I would have been happy to stay. In the current climate, everyone has their price in modern football. Villa may be an ambitious club and they would like to keep Gareth Barry but if Liverpool offer 50 million, are they going to take it? Probably.'

He says it is now up to Villa if they accept a suitable bid, if not he is sure that Gareth Barry, being the professional he is, will stay at Villa and do his job and adds 'He has already got England recognition from playing for Villa and he doesn’t need to leave Villa to play for England regularly. By the same token, Villa are looking to break into the top four. They nearly did it last year and will feel they can push on and finish in the top four this time, and qualify for the Champions League.'

I still hope Barry will stay. He's a model professional and a Villa Park legend. If he stays all will be forgotten as we know he'll play his heart out for the club.

Is this the start of ex-pros buttering us up for Barry staying ala the Gerrard to Chelsea escapade. I would welcome it but can't see it happening.

This stunned me when i read it this morning. He is the first to come out and say that maybe it wouldn't be in his his best interests to join Liverpool. AND to come from an ex-pool player at that. At least someone can see sense.

has no body ever applied for a job elsewhere, been unsuccessful in the application and then glad they stayed where they were? Footballers are seen as different types of people. They are just the same as us. Problem is that Liverpuddle wanted a player they cannot afford. One of their less brain gifted sons said some silly things in the press and the whole thing gets hyped. Hope he stays and remains captain. His heart will be in the same place next year as this.

Gerrard needs to shut up and let players make their own decisions remember him telling Michael Owen the kop were singing his name ! He has shown a total lack of respect to our club and this after cheating us at Villa Park last season !! Shame the JB article was not in the tabloids. There is no doubt we will have a better side with GB in it but I think this has gone to far now and he will leave. Fair play to John Barnes he can see what we are building at Villa.

Scoops, i very much doubt this story would make the tabloids because it doesn't favour Liverpool. You wont see anything that favours a non top 4 team over a top 4 team go to press.

I don't think Barry has really put a foot wrong in this whole saga. he certainly hasn't burnt his bridges at villa, and just because he would consider a move elsewhere doesn't make him a judas, or greedy, or even disloyal. I really do think he's gonna be at VP next season, playing alongside Sidwell and a few other new names on the teamsheet.

Barry hasn't put a foot wrong?!? So the story was leaked to the press how, exactly? He wants off and has been trying to engineer a move for some time, it would appear.

Sense spoken by John Barnes. He knows it, we know it, but sadly Gareth has had his head turned. Its a move that Gareth may well come to regret.

Can we get something straight please. Barry is NOT a legend. Yet. If he was at a small club, like Birmingham or West Brom etc, then yes he probably would be. But folkes, THIS IS WORLD FAMOUS VILLA PARK! Take a look through our history, Barry is a nobody in comparison with some of the greats who have had the privelige to wear the claret and blue. I agree he has the potential to become a legend, but in case you didn't notice from the various online polls etc, Barry's not exactly the most popular bloke at the moment is he? I wouldn't exactly call that 'Legend' status, would you?
