Trouble is, at the moment, there aren't many moves and most clubs are waiting for others to make the first move. If Barry goes for £20million that will set the tone for the rest of the window for all clubs for instance, or at least that is what my fuddled old brain is telling me!

That hasn't proved the case (and fair enough, June is often quiet for moves as contracts don't end until July 1)....

Maybe by the end of thread three we'll be laughing though! Again, we live in hope and expectation.

According to Goal.com, Valencia have slapped a price of €40m on the head of David Villa. Now, according to XE.com, €40m is only £31.7m. If we get £20m for Barry, that's only £11.7m for David Villa. Bargain !!! His surname is Villa, my first name is David ! It's a sign !!!

I dont get this whole thing about no clubs buying - we desperatley need a RW - a young, talented player with bags of potential. We also need a replacement for Barry and if we are being picky they should be more creative and attacking so the Reo-Coker can become a holding box-to-box player. It seems like Spurs have went and bought the ideal players for that!!! Another player I have admired for a few years is Jefferson Farfan - he left PSV a few weeks ago for £6m to Shalke 04 - surely we could have went for him!!! We were linked with Van Der Vaart a while back - we may have got him a few weeks ago - no way will we gat him now!!! I just think those 4 would have been worldclass, affordable players but we have missed the boat with them!!

Deano MON has a buy British strategy. So I think your post is kind of irrellevant. I agree there's a fair few players we could have signed though! Sidwell, Chimbonda and Bentley or Bullard - I'd cream myself. We need a striker - I'm struggling to think of options there. Any ideas? Doyle?

I agree Tarzan but to push on we need to look further afield and even at that he has went for Petrov, Salifou and Carew so i dont see why Modric did not appeal!! Anyways Sidwell, Bullard, Bentley, Boruc, Chimbonda and D.Bent would be great.

Woah maybe not then!!!! I mentioned on another article that Lafferty (a big man MON likes in the Crouch-mould who could be backup for Carew with Harewood) could play ahead of our pacy wingers and would be a good shout for £3-4m but it looks like he is off to Rangers. Im not sure there are many options...in england anyway!!

Bouma has played centre back most of the time i think, but in Holland the ball is played to feet more than in the prem. A good day for rumours today with us apparently making offers for Bently, Milner, Chimbonda, and Sidwell agreed. For me its all about how we can improve our defense, I think we will always score a lot of goals but we throw away points a giving away silly goals.

daveldvilla, right on the money with that comment. When Davies got his chance last season we really tightened up at the back. Then he got inured and we couldn't keep a clean sheet to save our lives even againast poor teams. And Carson couldn't save free kicks if his life depended on it. imagine if Laursen had got injured whilst Davies was out?? We would have been in big trouble. The good news is we'll be bringing in a new keeper, no real choice on that one!! hopefully we'll also get some better centre back cover and about 3 new full backs. fingers crossed eh?

Bid for Bentley, get Boruc, Chimbonda, not sure on but we are short on numbers, Santa Cruz, Hoyte and a cheeky bid for David Villa just to see his quality at VP and ofcourse his class surname on our shirts. Villa on Villa shirts should sell as many as Beckham did at Real Madrid and part pay his transfer fee! Whatever happens I am soooo frustrated and very impatient at the lack of signings MON. I know we must make the right choices at the right prices, but if we are going to kick on and try to smash into the top 4 then we need to spend pretty big dont we. Maybe a thread there? How much money should MON spend for us to get into the top 4 and should we raise our wage structure? We know for sure that these top targets we are linked with want big money moves and even bigger contracts. Sometimes a one of signing on fee isn't going to be big enough. I also wonder how much GB is frustrated at our lack of signings or has he already seen MON's shopping list and has decided to get out?? Glad the club have settled on not giving GB his testimonal just yet. GB, does that stand for greedy Bast8tard.

miguel is a real possibility - he wants away from valencia badly! that means possibly him, chimbonda and maybe? hoyte. RB sorted and not too shabby. i'd be happy with that trio. Wilf Bouma looked great for the dutch by the way.

Boruc looks very steady and we have missed that commanding keeper who can give our defence confidence. Dont know if we can get him but Boruc,Guzan and Taylor would be a great trio of keepers. I havent seen Miguel play but I think Chimbonda has been harshly treated always looked like a player to me,Gardener is great but not a natural rb. D Bent is a great finisher and would fit in well imo Does anyone know how many goals Sidwell scored for Reading in the Premier league ?

Bent would be perfect (as I said a few posts ago!!) - an excellent foil for Carew. Cuellar looked great in the UEFA Cup!! Good news this!! Yesterdays links to Chimbonda and Bentley were also excellent. If we got the 5 of them and added Boruc to that it would be our first XI sorted. Then work on the squad players. ALL these links are realistic but I have my doubt over Bentley - if we cant get him Milner, SWP or Lennon could do a good job - one of them would be fine!

He hasn't signed yet lads - lets not get ahead of ourselves. We've agreed a fee. Someone else may bid, or he may turn out to be a right greedy gin-ger and demand ridiculous wages. When MON is photographed with his arm around Sidwell, thats when i'll celebrate.

I would love to see Darren Bent with us, I doubt Spurs will sell him though especially with Berbatov in the balance also. Would the Londoner want to move to the midlands and take a large large pay cut, I doubt it. ALthough who knows I think he might be worth a punt is excactly what MON likes and would score a hatload of goals as he will nearly play every game. Besides by the sounds of it the ginger man will be taking a pay cut to get regular games maybe can Bent...

Have to say, i would be more than happy with Carlos Cueller at Villa Park. Rangers defence was the only reason they got to the UEFA Cup final last year and he was running the show. Sidwell coming in for 5.5m is pretty good business, not sure about Bent, MON could get the best out of him but he missed a lot of football last year and we dont need any more players that need to 'settle in', Perriera (sp) seems a good shout, but then again any RB is better than what we already have. All looks promising today, no doubt my hopes will be dashed by the end of the week.

Just one point on Bents £95k a week. That is only this year due to his signing on fee, Spurs have a wage cap at 45-50k which (among other things) seriously limits us in the transfer market. Although as someone else said can't see us selling for a big loss especially with Berba looking for a move

I can't believe anyone here is serious about Darren Bent. The guy is nowhere near the class player we need up front. He is slow of thought, poor in movement and misses too many chances. Apart from all of that he is based in London and on a wage that he would have to half before moving to the Midlands. He and we would be mad to go for this move. I'd use Maloney up front more this season (if he's not already signing-up for Rangers that is) along with Delfouneso as back-up for Carew, Harewood and Agbonlahor.

No way Bent is class he is unfortunately at the club where he is behind keane and berbatov. He was bought by the chairman as well dont forget so I dont think he ever fit in to spurs. If we got I would make a bet ith anyone he will get at least 20 goals for us, unless he was injured of course.

Eircol.......i'm unconvinced. Seems like one of those tricks that supposed 'psychics' use. Like that TV program Crossing Over. A scam based around non specific information. Sidwell is not yet confirmed and according to you we will have another in the bag by close of play Sunday. IF you are right about this then will all be expecting more from you. I do seem to remember you stating that we were in for Ramsey. I don't recall Cardiff mentioning our bid, just Arsenal and Manchester United's. Although that doesn't prove that a bid wasn't made............I'm calling you out. Time to prove yourself.

Food for thought.........Man Utd, Chelski and Arsenal won't be in for Bentley. That leaves Everton and Liverpool but Everton aren't being linked to Right Mids. We seem to be going head to head with Liverpoo for Milner aswell. Even if we lose out Liverpool, they surely can't sign both of them!! Thus we must be in with an excellent chance of seeing one of them in a Villa shirt next season. Personally I think they both have their positives although Bentley crossing from deep whilst Ashley runs at defenders does make my mouth water. Milner is faster but perhaps not dangerous enough with his delivery. That said, either would be great

Out of milner or bentley I wouldnt be sure who I would take. Both of the players at times are the best players for their team and either would mean teams can no longer double up on young. As long as we get one I will be very happy. Lets hope Sidwell puts pen to paper in the next 48 hours and we will kick on from there and get a load of players signed!

Unbelievably Darren Bent is on £95K a week at Spuds. This was confirmed on the list of Europes 50 best paid players that was circulating last season. I would like him at Villa Park but would be absolutely gobsmached if we signed him. There is a very fine dividing line between attracting the players you want and not alienating the players you already have, over the money they earn.

voiceoftheholte, Bent is not on 95k a week i can assure you. The figure quoted included his signing on fee. His wages are around the 40k a week mark as spurs have a wage cap in place that doesn't allow a player on a long term contract and has cost a large transfer fee to be that high. If you get to see the next report i bet bent is nowhere to be seen. Bent moved to spurs on less money than he was offered by west ham which shows good character i think. Unfortunately for you guys he will not be sold. He is a top class striker and people that have dismissed him clearly have not watched him enough

I would be overjoyed with one or two if they came off, as you can imagine there are one or two positions we need cover in, so you can expect one or two players that would add to the squad but not make a massive impact, but that is just my opinion, you have to remember things are changing every hour of every day, it does seem as if not much is happening, but believe me things are..

Surprise keeper still at euros eh? Is it the very young (22 i think) russian goalie? I too linked us with A Ferdinand as he is young english and can learn from Laursen. Hope we get him and MON works his majic on him. It has to be a big surprise signing at RB. Miguel has been linked with us and a few other top clubs so maybe we are in the driving seat. Lets hope so. i mentioned Schweinsteiger a couple of times, now im sure MoN has to sign him, he was great against Portugul scoring and setting up the other two... Right sided midfielder, young and quick with a great cross and shot... come on MoN write the check and get him here... i think he will be available for 10-15mil for sure probably closer to 10 would be a great signing in my opinion..

folks, we had the same last year with someone having all the 'inside' info. It is easy to make educated guesses. Think some of you are being wound up in all honesty. There are a few very good people at Villa and they would not be leaking information of who we are going to sign on the internet via my or any other villa site.

Exactly what i was thinking! As frustrating as it can be waiting for activity in the transfer window, keep the faith in M'ON, he knows what he is doing and I have no doubt M'ON is working hard to deliver the right calibre of players. The players are due back for training on the 1st/2nd July and our first preseason friendly against Lincoln is on the 15th July, so expect the majority of activity to happen during that period. (NRC first signing last season was done during the first week of July last summer and activity will happen around then again) The players will come, they have to otherwise M'ON wont be able to put enough people on the bench for the game against Lincoln and the ITC opposition. Come the second week of July, Villa would have recruited a GK, RB, CB, MF, simply because they are needed and this gives them enough time to train with the squad before Villa's season K/Os

MattUTV, Huddlestone has been linked a few times, as has Aaron Lennon, but there haven't been any strong rumours or links with much substance to them. Might be 2+2 = 5 as both those players are the sort MON seems to like, young, English etc.

ASPINAL - agreed M'ON made a bad decision to go through the whole of last season without a RB and again not to recruit a RB in the January transfer window. However he still masterminded the team to 6th position and Villa's best season in a long time. Its easy for fans to say we should sign this player and this player, but when your in the management chair its a completely different ball game and plenty of other things to think about before bringing in players. We ask the question with a few more quality signings over January and a specialist RB, we could have won the games against Fulham, Boro, Sunderland and Wigan and qualified for the CL, however we won games which we were not favourites to win and lost games which we should have won. Why is it that you have no faith in M'ON? Because he didnt sign a RB, because he doesnt sign the players at a earlier stage, because were not linked to player such as Modric, Dos Santos, Ronaldinhio etc etc, he doesnt spend the millions of £££ Randy has, or is it because he hasnt brought any talented players from abroad? Without all this, he has done a grand job - we are still in the rebuilding process and expectations are becoming greater season by season and his aim is to break into the top 4 but its not expected overnight but it will happen. Buying anyone and people who dont fit it with the team doesnt mean success, Newcastle, WHU, Man City, Spurs and Portsmouth have all splashed the cash on unknown foreign players yet we still finished ahead of them, although the latter two did win the cup competitions. Allardyce, SGE and Jol three very fine managers buying players from all over the country - yet where did that leave them?

Many fans might have been sayin the same last season when O'Neil signed Harewood, Davies, Salifou, Routledge and NRC yet he defied the odds and finished 6th. I think the fact O'Neil has taken us a long way from where we were two seasons ago has been overlooked - there is no better man and no other manager i would have and trust to take Villa to the next level.

I agree with JCC MON is def the best manager we have had for a long time, expectation is high which is a good thing, but we've got to be sensible, we can hit the top four but realistically we need to establish ourselves top 5/6 for a couple of seasons, maybe a little silverware, slowly and surely bringing in young talent that Mon can work his magic on, I dont want us to be a quickfix flash in the pan, MON will bring in quality before the inertoto cup he knows what we need to take us to the next level. Lets just trust him we've no reason not to!

I've been an avid FM player for a good long while, and Andrei Arshavin has been looking very good recently, and i've bought him a few times and has always been good. Obviously, this doesn't always translate into real life, believe it or not. However, if there is ever a player who is just like Ashley Young, if not even better, then it's him. Every time i've seen him in the flesh, the guy has been a world beater. Buy him now MON...if you don't then i say we all do a collection and give the takings to Randy.

One week left before the start of July and the official opening of the transfer window. Hopefully that will see an end to this infuriating frustration. 3 signings in the first week in key positions (GK,RB,RM), then 4 or 5 more signings which will be a mixture of squad padding and hopefully one or 2 really class players and then we can all finally put this behind us and turn our attentions with optimism back to the actual football. Akinfeev&Guzan(GK),Bentley/Milner(RM), Miguel/Pereira(RB), Ferdinand(CB), Sidwell(CM), mattock(LB), stearman(RB) and a couple of pleasant surprises hopefully including a creative central midfielder and a 20 goal striker. That'll do nicely. Of course that would also have done nicely last summer. Or at Christmas. Hopefully a 6th place finish and Europe will finally give MON the ammo needs to get these players of 'Quality' that he is always referring to but never actually signing. Fortunately for the mental health of Villa fans everywhere he doesn't really have much choice seeing as we don't have 11 players at the moment. Although there was that comment about youth players getting a lot more pitch time...........hmmm

Regarding MON's comment on giving the youth players a chance to impress, i think he was talkin about Stieber and Delfouneso in particular and will have a look at one or two other a chance in the League Cup and FA Cup. Two players who have been linked to the Premiership - Schweinsteiger and Van Der Vaart. TEAMTALK states that Schweinsteiger is approaching the final year of his contract and would fancy plying his trade in the Premiership - M'ON has indicated that he thinks Schweinsteiger is a really good player (mentioned this in Germanys first game of Euro 08) so maybe just maybe MON might make a move. On the other hand RVDV is just as talented but is left footed and would give the team more balance, maybe more expensive. Any preferences on the two?

UTV - Groundhog Day - I seem to remember we had this debate last year - does the transfer window start at the close of the season or the 1st of July. Its irrevelant as far as we are concerned. Whats more important is when is the last day of the transfer window. I would be willing to bet my house on there not being seven new players b4 the start of the season. I'm just using history as a guide here.

Summer window is from midnight the day after the final league matches are played until 31st Aug. I checked in the Premier League handbook! We could conceivably sign players after the season starts, which by past examples means they won't get a game to about 2012!

The transfer window officially opens on the 1st of July. Transfers can be finalised before this but the player's contract doesn't officially transfer to their new club until the 1st of July. Given that most players are on holiday until that date it gives the impression that the window is already open. I'm pretty sure that it isn't. I suspect that Curtis Davies will be announced on the official site on the 1st July which has nothing to do with the date his contract was started or is due to finish. As we are paying a fee for him and not signing him out of contract, if the window was already open then it would have been announced when the final league game ended.

Okay Eircol, lets just say that 5 of the players on this mythical shortlist are signed by other clubs, are you telling me MON will have no viable alternatives on his shortlist. Im not saying we should bring in 12 players, i am saying that if we need "8" players, then we should have at least 2 other options for each player, making a shortlist of about 24. I am not whingeing either, i just find it a little annoying that while we are all eagerly awaiting signings, someone can come on this site, feed tiny tit bits of very vague and obvious information, and then change the goalposts when they are proved wrong. Where are the 2 signings from last week (Sidwell is still yet to sign)? You could continue to say that we have hit a snag over the fee all the way to till the end of the transfer window. May i suggest you heed your own advice about "talking rubbish"!

I thought 6m for Ferdinand was about right, as I think there would be an element of the gamble in signing him, maybe Wham could take 6m up front with additional money for appearances etc.? We seem to be running into problems signing these players biys. Sidwell has ben stalled, a bid for bentley has been rejected. I think all the teams are putting thier prices up as we have the smallest squad. Its simple supply and demand the fact we have this small squad means we have to spend more. WHAM want 8mil for Ferdinhand for example when he is probably worth 4 or 6mil, a right back that would cost 4 mil will cost us 6mil because we havent got one and therefore need one desperately. I hope MONs attidude will not stop him players of the quality we need because he doesnt want to pay over the top for anyone.

My choice for incomings please: Guzan - free and or Robinson - 3m (I'd like Carson back but he will cost too much), Dunne - 5m, or Ferdinand at the right price - 5m, Shorey - 4m - a must get signing!, Sidwell - 5m, Bentley - 16m and surprise move for Kieran Richardson - 6m or Mort Gamst Pedersen - 7m, Darren Bent - 10m and or Santa Cruz - 10m...all players who want Europe and some who are desparate to leave clubs with League finishes beneath their individual talent. - That would be 50m or realistically if we only buy one 10m striker and miss out one ofthe mf's between 33-40m. Bargain (bearing in mind WBA are gonna get about 5-8m for Davies this season too).

I genuinely believe we need to give competition to NRC as his last ball needs BIG improvement. He won't improve unless pushed for his place. We need Bent as he is absolute quality when playing regular and that can't be argued with. We may have a better chance with Cruz though as he doesn't have any London bias etc...Whats your choice for incomings?

Hey Koolbill, I would definately take Bent, I rate him very highly as he was the main man at Charton in our team he will get a sackful of goals. If Cruz doesnt go to United or another big club I would take him for 12mil. Someone on the right is obviously needed either milner or bentley would do nicely I dont think there is much between them. A creative midfielder is something we crave as well Van Der Vaart would be amazing ut I dont know how likely that will be. I would take Robinson and Guzan they both seem to favour us and from what I have seen of Guzan (admittedly not a lot) he seems good and would push Robinson for the No1 shirt. In defence Dunne would have been quality but he will sign again with City, Anton would be good back up to be honest I am happy with Laursen and Davies (when fit) so I dont think we need a massive signing there. There has ben lots of talk about a few portugeuse RBs but dont know anything about them really. As long as we bring in a minimum of 2GK, 2 Defenders (1 or both that can play as a RB) 2 MF (1 RM, 1CM) and 1 CF I will be relativly happy. I wish we would move quicker rather than later though those intertoto games are getting ever closer...

Spurs do have a full squad though, we need about 5 to get us to an even playing field. I heard last season we had the smallest squad in not only the premiership but 4 less than the team with the smallest squad in championship also (cant remember who tho). Granted in the championship there are more games but there is also no Europe either. My mates a rovers fan they played 2 games (home and away legs so really 4) against naff teams and they were in the UEFA cup. We are going to have a lot more games next season and need more players sooner rather than later as the intertoto is very soon...

Ericol, We have gone forward your right but we were lucky with injuries last year as well, I doubt anyone thought Martin "Handle With Care" Laursen would play almost every minute of football we played last year. As for the past few windows MON hs been fustrated and and not bought as much as he would of liked that is very clear to see. No manager would start a season wihout a RB or RM unless they missed out on thier targets. As for the nice suprises I am eagerly and nervously wating for them... but then you did say we would have signed two players by now?!

What do you find wrong with Johnson ? Apart from the bluenose stint ! I have always liked the look of him . He works so hard and gets himself into good posiitions . I definately think this transfer is a goer and I would really like to see him at VP !

Fear, spot on there mate. None of our previous signings were mentioned in the press at all. I think that Sidwell may be an exception to this but strongly doubt that we are in for Andy Johnson and i don't see why we would be going after Ferdinand either, especially not for 8M. That's an awful lot to spend on a player who wouldn't be in the starting 11 when we have so many holes in our team. If we were about to spend 80M then i could understand signings like that but I think £40M - £50M is more accurate depending on whether GB stay or goes. There's been a lot of talk about Kieran Clarke in our youth team who i think is a centre back and we already Knight there as well. Not the strongest cover but cover none the less. When we have no RB and no RM it's hard to see us going after another expensive CB. And Johnson is rubbish, one season wonder and most of them were penalties

first off i gotta say im a lpool fan. ok well first off i want to say that i believe Heskey would be decent at villa in the sense he can knock balls down for the quick england boys who are playing on the wings and behind. HOWEVER there is no way he would throw Carew out of the team because they both do the same job but Carew does it better. Then there is Johnson who i naturally hate because he is from everton, but have to say although he has had an absolute RUBBISH seasson he is better then that and i could see him partnering someone like heskey or carew upfront allowing agbonlahor to drop to the wing and have young on the other side... right? let me know what you think

It would be nice to see your released 'keeper Thomas Sorenson coming down to Ipswich, although it appears unlikely. Who should Villa sign? well, obviously Sidwell, as there is no way Barry will stay, ask for Alonso in part exchange. Also you should look at maybe Miguel Veloso, Andreii Arshavin, Orlando Engelaar, Andre Ooijer, Klass Jan Huntelaar, Gary Neville/ Wes Brown etc.

For a start should the worst happen, DIC will buy the club and then give their new manager many millions, probably more than Chelsea have spent. I've heard Mr O'Neill is actually 80% through negotiations to bring Ronaldo to Villa Park. We're sending Salifou on loan to Real Madrid as payment for the cover story.
