Tuesday's Aston Villa Transfer Rumours

Some decent links to Villa today and not one mention of Barry, well ok, just one mention of Barry and now 3 as I've mentioned him twice!

Could it be that the transfer activity is about to begin? Well, the paper links are certainly hotting up!

According to the Daily Express today Villa have made the first move in the race for Blackburn midfielder David Bentley. Previous reports have estimated his value at around £15million and despite the player saying he wanted out, the Ewood Park outfit have made it clear he'll only be allowed to leave if the price is right.

The Daily Mirror say that Villa might well be getting Spurs right-back Pascal Chimbonda who they claim will be offloaded by the White Hart Lane outfit.

The Daily Mail say that Villa are set to buy 'misfit' Steve Sidwell for £5million from Chelsea. According to the report Martin O'Neill wants personal terms agreed quickly and suggests Sidwell will take a pay cut because half the £5m fee will form part of his pay off from Chelsea.

Meanwhile the Mirror claims that Newcastle have set the price for James Milner at £9million with both Liverpool and Aston Villa waiting in the wings (in the wings for a winger, jeez, this is quality reporting!!!)

The Independent claim that Portsmouth will make an opening bid of around £10million for Peter Crouch this week However they also claim that Villa and Newcastle are also interested but none of the clubs are sure what level to pitch their bids at after Rafa Benitez had put a £15million price tag on the England strikers head. Crouch is currently on holiday so no move would be imminent anyway but the report also says that Villa would expect Crouch as part of any deal involving Gareth Barry. The paper goes on to say that exchange hasn't met with Tom-Jones-mini-me Benitez as yet adding 'Even then, the personal terms at Villa would have to be right for Crouch, who will not be pushed into a move. In the worst case scenario, he would be prepared to see out his contract and leave on a Bosman free transfer next summer.'

Fans on here seem split on whether they'd like Peter Crouch back at Villa Park anyway, what do you think?

Bentley, Chimbonda and Sidwell would be perfect players in the positions we need them. The RB and RW problem is obvious and Sidwell is a good more attacking option than Barry. As for Crouch I have my doubts - I think Darren Bent is a better (possibly cheaper) option. That would leave us needing another RB - preferably one who can cover at CB if needed (how about that Juventus player - Mellberg??) so Onouha from City would be great. Then a big surprise from MON in August - Van der Vaart or someone that really makes the rest of the league sit up and take notice!! The likes of Scannell and Stearman to 'flesh out' the squad would work too!!

Finally some meaty speculation lets hope we get them tied up quickly before any one else makes a move for them. Poor old routlage if Bentley comes its no more games for him. Put this two along side Van Der Vaart and young and we will have a seriously threatening midfield... now me serioes links to a RB and GK then we almost field a full 11...

I heard that we're going to sign Alan Titchmarsh as the new groundsman I think this would be a good signing that proves our ambition

To be honest i'd rather do no business with Liverpool whatsoever, unless of course we're taking the fat spanish waiter for a ride and mug them for every last penny, their hubcaps, kitchen sink, their grandma's etc

I think Crouch would be awsome Astonian Villan, as a goal post.

Just to correct a few of the statements I've seen about what Bentley said. He said that he wants to move for CL football or at least European football. To me that says he'd like CL but if it was the right cub with the right set up and ambitions he would go to a club in UEFA. Well I know we are not in UEFA yet but we are only 2 qualifying games away so it's really all down to MON and Randy to use their persuasive powers on him.

Actually if you read the quote Bentley wants a 'New Challenge' 'Champions League, or Europe'.

Sorry Villan-in-Cyprus hes not regulation hight for a post but we might be able to use him as a floodlight, as for the Bentley thing i cant see us getting him as all villa seem to be doing at the moment is talking of ambition same as all other clubs at the moment but their has been nothing for him to see what we are trying to do.

To be fair if we get crouch in a swap we wont go for another striker, I would like to see some one new come in instead of crouch even tho I think crouch will be ok for us.

2 things:

1. Are the transfer rumours really hotting up, or are they just the same drivel with more exciting names attached?

2. It seems that on alternating days Villa want a a deal for Barry which is either all cash with no player add-ons (one day) or that for any deal to be made *insert random Liverpool player here* must be included for any deal to be made.

I would suggest to people like Tez not to put any stock in these rumours. As a famous Ham once said (every bloody day): ITSOTP (In The Shirt, On The Pitch)

Villan-in-Cyprus: have you not been watching Crouch over the past couple of seasons? He's been immense, and with ash and swp whipping it into him from both sides he'd score 15-20 goals a season for us. He's also got a great attitude...

I don't want Chimbonda! The player has no loyalty, only caring about his pay packet. I want players that care about the shirt they are wearing.

If we could get Chimbonda for £million I would take a punt.

Chimbonda gets the benefit of the doubt from me regarding his attitude. If anyone can get him to behave and work for the team it's MON. Sign him up! Not so for Bentley; he is a pure mercenary. Wouldn't touch him with a bargepole. Stick it to the scousers both ways; stiff them for 18m cash for Barry then take Milner at half the price of Bentley. That sounds like three good signings to me once you throw in Sidwell.

i think crouch would be ok for us, last time he was here, we wernt playing the kind of football that benefits him, we can cross a ball well now, and were the best in the league at set peices. i also think chimbonda would be a good signing, his attitude issue was blown out of proportion and if mon thinks he has the right mentality then i think he'll be ok

The current bun says a guy who knows a man who lives in a street that has a paper shop that was once visited by Bentleys friends great great uncle bobs best mate knows for a fact that Bentley wants to go to spuds. Have you also heard NU want £9m for Milner. For that money the chubby spanaird at L'pool can have him.

i don't think we need crouch. bentley and sidwell good for the midfield, but i did hear the bid for bentley may be rejected. milner is not worth 9. apparently miguel wants out of valencia now, so go get him MON. him, chimbonda and hoyte - thats 3 RB's!!

olafthegreat, sorry I haven't really seen that much of Crouch the last couple of seasons as he spent most of it on the bench, for both Liverpool and England. And I believe he would do the same at Villa, even though we don't have a 'Torres'.

I cant make up my mind about Crouch, the stats speak for themselves and prove he is a goalscorer and a top striker but i only have to look at him and i think how can someone that tall be any good? If we can get him cheap enough he will be worth it as Carew fitness is questionable, nowhere near the 15m figure mini me is on about, more like £7/8m. Just sign someone please! But not Pennant.

not sure about Crouch. I rate him very highly and his goalscoring record is certainly impressive. BUT, he's a very specific type of player who encourages teams to play a certain long ball style. I think with the flair we have in the form of ashley and gabby and hopefully the flar we will add with a new central midfielder then we are more of a get it down and play it team. Liverpool have underused crouch for this reason and only bring him on to change the game. I think to get the most from him he needs to play every game and he don't think that is how we would use him. Unfortunately for him, despite his goalscoring ability i think his style of play limits him to teams who are perhap not so pretty to watch. I may be proved wrong but if he was 6 inches shorter and had that goalscoring record then his value would be double and the big teams would be falling over themselves. Alas, he is not and they are not

UTV, i think crouch fits the MON style of play perfectly. Everytime we have a corner, the likes of Crouch, Carew, Laursen and Knight (average height of about 6ft 5) all charging in.... I would hate to be a defender against all those. That's just one example though....

OMG Bent wasn't THAT good... was he?

If Crouch could balance the ball on his head whilst running, then he could run from our goal to the opponents and just drop it in their net. No one else would be able to get the ball off him? Or maybe if him and Carew headed it to each other all the way up the pitch..... if he can do that then I say sign him.
