Liverpool Set To Match Barry's 20m Price Tag?

According to the Daily Mirror Liverpool are set to make a fourth bid for Villa skipper Gareth Barry and the red top claims the clubs expect to come to an agreement this week.

Pie in the sky?

Well, not if you believe their claim that Villa have shelved plans for Gareth Barry's testimonial for 10 years service. Apparently August 9th had been pencilled in for the game but this was scrapped after the player told Martin O'Neill that he would like to join the Anfield club.

The Mirror also claim director Paul Faulkner has faxed Liverpool Villa's valuation of the player, which is said to be 20million valuation in order to bring this saga to an end quickly.

Further to that the Guardian say that Liverpool will back Rafael Benitez in his bid for Barry. They also repeat the 20million figure and claim that with Xabi Alonso and John Arne Riise (who the club have accepted a 4million bid for apparently) on the way out, they will have the funds to meet Villa's valuation.

One way or the other, hopefully this will be sorted one way or the other in the next week or so.

lets hope we start buying some decent players ourself soon and not waste it on Wayne Routledges as we will never make the top 5 next season.

20m is a good good price if we got bentley in for 15m and still have 5m to spend on another player then we're looking in good shape but if he blows it on 3-4 average joes then ill be furious!

It looks like GB has gone, and at 20m it is good business, PROVIDING we can replace him with someone of at LEAST his ability. Finding the balance his left foot gives might be very difficult indeed.I really think we should remember what an excellent servant GB has been for the club, and although the way Liverpool have conducted business has been despicable, let's not be so blinkered and vindictive and lets give GB a 'Crouch/ David James/Gary Cahill type' reception back at VP. None of those three players did anywhere near as much for Villa as GB.

'On 23 January 2005, Pennant was arrested and charged with drunk-driving after crashing his Mercedes into a lamp-post in Aylesbury, while serving a sixteen month driving ban and uninsured. Upon being arrested, Pennant initially gave his name as that of Arsenal teammate Ashley Cole. Pennant pleaded guilty to drunk-driving and driving whilst disqualified, and he was sentenced to ninety days in prison on 1 March.[1] He was released on parole after 30 days and immediately returned to playing for Birmingham, although he had to wear an electronic tag at all times, including while on the pitch' Yeah, just what we need. Once a bluenose, always a bluenose.

Come on, that's really funny about pennant! First off, I've gotten a DUI too and won't hold it against him. Secondly, don't tell me that isn't one of the funniest things you've heard - that he said he was Ashley Cole! HA!

crashing your Merc into a landpost drunk whilst serving a 16 month ban and being uninsured is a bit more than your average DUI. The fact that he is a former bluenose makes the whole thing ten times worse. I can't possibly find that tw*t funny. If he wasn't playing football he'd be hanging around with his scally mates thieving, doing crack and *****ing on old ladies. I wouldn't touch that **** with a barge pole and i'll cut off my right bollock if MON goes anywhere near him. The fact that Liverpool signed him after he bombed out of Arsenal and ended up at Birmingham speaks volumes for how stupid they are.

Pennant is a nut case! Waste of time IMO...Milner anyday over him, Bentley would be great too, but I dunno if I'd want to pay double to get him over Milner...tough call!

Dont care anymore. Liverpool are getting played for 20m in my opinion. Every team is overpricing their players, now its time for us to do it, 20m and no less, now lets buy bentley with that money

Not according to the Guardian they're not. According to them they are refusing to pay Villa's asking price and are expecting Barry to slap in a transfer request.

I think they'd like to match our valuation, they just dont have the cash. A surprising state of affairs for a supposed 'top four' club.

20m is indeed the price we need to hold out for. Its fair, its realistic, and proof that we no longer sell off our big names cheaply or easily.
