It may be Nelson, Without the Fernando

Aston Villa have reportedly re-ignited their interest in Benfica right-back Nelson, as contract his agent suggests all is not well in Portugal.

The 24 year-old defender has been linked with Villa in the past, however it was believed that the player was much more favourable for a continuation of his playing career with Benfica, rather than a move abroad.

Nelson’s international rival for the right-back slot, Jose Boswinga has already seemingly signed for Chelsea in a £15million deal, and is promptly showing in the Euro 2008 tournament already, just what Roman & manager-less co. are forking out the cash for the player.

Meanwhile, going back to the Nelson saga, somewhat shorter than the Gareth Barry “will he won’t he” story, his agent has been quoted as saying:

“My player is not satisfied with the current arrangements. There are further talks planned but there has been interest from other clubs including clubs in England should Benfica agree to let him go.”

An interesting choice, although may well be paper-talk. Whilst I thought I should report on it, my personal opinion is that we should still at some point expect Richie Stearman to be inbound as our first choice full back on the right side for Villa. He’s no Mellberg, but at least he’d be playing in position!
