Barry's Agent Says Player Wants Liverpool Move
According to Shaun Custis of the Sun, amongst others, Gareth Barry has phoned Martin O'Neill saying after 10 years at Villa he wants a fresh challenge and wants to be able to move to Liverpool.
The Villa skipper's agent Alex Black is quoted as saying:
'Gareth has spoken to Martin since he returned from England’s game in Trinidad and told him how he feels. At this stage of his career Gareth wants to be playing Champions League football and believes this is his chance to do it.'
All players want to play Champions League, all players should want to help the team they are with play Champions League!
The report says Barry hopes a 'compromise deal' of around £15million can be sorted. Errr, why? He is our player, contracted for another two years, if they want him let them pay. We don't need to compromise on this. IF he has to go (and I'd rather anywhere else after their antics or to tell him to see out next season) then we need top dollar or £10million, Crouch and Riise. If they want to unsettle our players and turn their heads, then very least we can do is what Spurs do and refuse to do business at any rate other than one that suits us. Spurs always usually get a great price for departing players, lets hope the new era at Villa means we do the same.
Enough of this pandering to the players, I want our club to pander to ourselves.
Again, there aren't direct quotes from the player, but with his agent now angling also for a move, it does look like the decision has been made. Tough on Barry really that it isn't his decision, it is Randy's and Martin O'Neill's!

I agree with you regarding contracts I really do. However, 10M as well as crouch (10M) and Riise (5M). Do you honestly think Barry is worth 25M? Seems slightly high to me to be fair.

Well said JP, if he wants Champions League so badly then let him go, at our price, to any team but Liverpool. Unless the price is very right in our favour, as you have suggested. Otherwise, as you say we are rolling over for a player. I suggest he replaces Lampard if, as suggested he is off to foreign parts.

I see why Rafa is buying Barry, he links up well with Stevie and two of our other midfielders are off to the olympics at the start of the season plus we are not to sure if Babel will be fully fit so its makes logical sense as would keeping Alonso but of course we have no moolah and need to sell to spend which is a pity but hey-ho thats how it goes.
I feel sorry for Aston Villa fans i know what it would be like losing Gerrard to say Inter Milan, and i am not impressed with how Liverpool have handled the whole thing seeing as i know Rafa would go Ape Sh!t if Mouriniho was going "come here steven its for the best" all over again... Let's get real - no use hanging on to Barry if he doesn't want to be at VP...get the best price possible so MON can rebuild and move on. Hopefully Wenger will show interest and an auction will take place. I think Barry is making a big big mistake but there you go...

It was obvious from his lamentable performance against Wigan Barry was off. That and his stark refusal to deny it, you didn't need to be a genius to work it out. I agree however that we need to bleed Liverpool dry for their tapping-up, we're in a position of strength. £17mill and not a penny less.

It is apparent they have got to Barry, either by Gerrard or Tom Jones. Therefore they have broken the rules. Man U have reported Madrid for their courtship of Ronaldo, Liverpool have done exactly the same with Barry. I still do not think he is irreplacable, he is not our best player and although I will be sad to see him go, he can be replaced for a lot less than the money we will receive for him.

All we ever have to go on is speculation, partly from the press but I suspect equally from ourselves as each year we believe this is going to be the one where we play with the big boys. Just watching the Dutch game last night I saw Van Brockhurst and Wesley Sneijder play great games. Both men were heavily linked with Villa. In truth we probably never had much chance of signing either but the band wagon was rolling and we jumped on. I firmly believe our lack of enthusiasm in the transfer windows goes against us. I'm losing count of how many players we need just to bring the numbers back up to last seasons squad.

My prediction for next season, Villa do the double over barry and the pool, finish in 4th ahead of them, while they get knocked out of the champions league group stage with barry not playing any part due to unfortunate timing of injuries...... Think barry think....

I'd be completely loyal and would never be swayed by fat spaniards. All I ask is for some fuel money as i'd have to travel up from sussex everday.

He is still our captain and has given 10 years to this club. IF he leaves, then we can all feel free to dramatically lower our opinions of him. For now, he is still our captain. I think Barry needs MON and Villa more then MON and Villa needs Barry. After all these years of good play, all of a sudden he is one of the most sought after players in England(If you believe the papers anyway), He is flavor of the month. Let him go to Liverpool for around 15mill plus Crouch(If on the table) and watch as Barry complains and whines about not getting his game week in week out due to Rafa's rotation system, then return to Villa in about 2 seasons. You Just Watch.

Thing is, the chubby spanaird struggles in the prem. We all go on about breaking into the top 4 but they are supposed to be title contenders, yet they can't break the top 3. In europe he does well same as in spain, but when it comes to the bread and butter stuff in the prem he hasn't got a clue. They aren't full of crap players, just a manager who doesn,t know what to do with them. I'm guessing we could come out of this with some decent players and Barry may end up losing his way as he sits it out on the bench.
