'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Laursen Says Spend + Villa's Transfer Rumours

Villa's defensive rock Martin Laursen has once again (or the reports have used old quotes which is just as likely) said that Villa need to spend big this summer in order to push on.

He said: 'The requirement is to get good players and they are not cheap. So we need a lot of money to buy good players and to buy the right players. That is the manager’s job but he needs a lot of money because if not, we can’t compete with the big clubs.'

Adding, 'We have proved we can do very well with a small group of players and this squad has a lot of potential. So we need some more quality players and if we qualify for the UEFA Cup, then we need some more players because it won’t be enough just to have 16 players. We haven’t had any injuries and if we are going to play in Europe that would be a big ask as well because a lot of us have international games as well. There are some important qualifiers coming up so it will be hard.'

So who are we being linked with today?!?

Apparently Benfica defender Nelson is unhappy with the contract he has been offered and that might re-ignite interest from Villa. A report in Portugal claimed 'The Cape Verdean full-back recently renewed his contract, which will keep with the Eagles until 2011, but would like to have it renegotiated as he admits that he could have earned much more abroad. Nelson has garnered interest from other clubs in Europe, namely Aston Villa and Sevilla.' All sounds a bit strange to me, if he has already signed a deal, then that is that surely?

The Mirror claim that Manchester City want to beat Villa to the £6m signing of Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell.

The Mirror also claim, again, that Villa are 'chasing' Arsenal fullback Justin Hoyte. Must be a bloody long race, we've been chasing him for months.

Another report claims that Liverpool are also after Blackburn's David Bentley, a player we have also been linked to. This particular report says they'll be after Bentley once they sign Barry who they say is expected at Anfield next week. NOT unless a bid is accepted by Villa he is not! Everyone seems to think there will be a mass exodus from Blackburn but why will there? Unless good offers come in for their players, the club doesn't have to sell them just because they have lost a good manager, a club like that will survive the departure of Hughes for goodness sake and good as he was, there will be plenty of others who can fill his boots.

Newcastle winger James Milner is the target for Aston Villa and Liverpool if reports in the Mirror and the Sun are to be believed.

The Birmingham Mail have repeated the rumour that Villa want 17-year-old Crystal Palace superkid winger Sean Scannell in a deal worth around £3million. I can't see Palace boss Simon Jordan selling his future crown jewell's for a relatively low £3million though, can you? He was quoted months and months ago saying there would be no cheap departures.

The Birmingham Mail also claim O'Neill is also looking to firm up his interest in Tottenham's Tom Huddlestone who would be worth around £5million according to the press talk valuers (!) as well as winger Aaron Lennon IF the move for James Milner doesn't work out. Again, I'm not sure Ramos will be looking to off-load the promising youngsters that Martin Jol got to the club, they might have to spend a bit more time on the bench maybe but....?

Huddlestone, Lennon, Dawson, Hart/Hennessey, Nicky Shorey, Daniel van Buyten, Nélson, Montolivo, Thierry Henry, Bring the following and i'll be a very happy chappy, Even though we know all the signings above won't happen, but we do need 7+ players, we have already lost 5 players so far and are left with one 2nd rate keeper, you watch MON will bring in 5 half rated players and will be forced to bring in the reserves, When it comes to transfers i don't have complete faith, All we ever hear is be patient and then you see the Petrovs and Harewood's flying this way showing moments of brilliance and then nothing more than super subs.

industrial_musical-----He doesn't need to cross the ball when he can get past any player in the premiership with confidence and his crossings aren't that bad, and let's remember he is only 21 and imagine Lennon, Young, Agbonlahor, Henry screaming towards you on the counter....

oh yeah u really think martin oneil will sign Henry?! come on we all know that he is going to be looking at home grown young players! for the life of me i do not understand why we are not competing with the likes of tottenham in the transfer market! We should not be signing the players who are no longer good enough for spuds! we are a huge team and surley we could tempt very good players (eg, giovani dos santos,, modric) PULL YOUR FINGURE OUR MARTIN!

Why wouldnt he sign Henry ? even if we paid 10m for him on 120k a week for 2 years we would make it up by World Media it would put Villa on the market, he would help us attract big name players and we would be rolling, If i remembered correctly Beckham went to Real on stupid money and he paid for himself within 5 days or something, and remember Davids at Spurs he joined and they were then put on the Media even more. We need Henry and imagine how much Young and Gabby would come on as players with him around.

I look at spurs signing modric and dos santos. i look at man city trying to get jo and ronaldinho. I do NOT want to see villa signing another harewood or knight. SURELY MON will sort it out. This transfer window could see him prove himself inept in the transfer market. i seriously hope not. i have faith in him to get it right, but he must understand it will be difficult for villa fans to remain patient if he does what he did last summer.

Even if we wanted to sign Henry, he won't come to us. He's already stated that he wouldn't play anywhere other than Arsenal in England. We are as likely to sign him as we are Christiano Ronaldo or Kaka. Some people on this site must smoke some good stuff!

Got to agree about Henry. No way on earth he'd come to Villa; same goes for the likes of Bentley or Huntelaar. These players are being linked with some of the biggest clubs in Europe and we just have to appreciate that we're no there yet. We have to try and find younger players and develop them into stars. And besides, has anyone actually watched Henry this season?? When he hasn't been injured (which has been a lot) he's looked terrible. Lost his pace and regulary made to look poor next to the likes of Messi and Iniesta. Even if he wanted to come, I wouldn't want him at Villa. We don't need to go down the route of West Ham etc signing past it players on massive wages.

I know that this will be *** out but i just have to say this. Some people posting on here are complete *****S. I won't mention who you are as I'm sure you will recognise yourselves from my following comments. The fact is, the TW is barely open and players can't even be registered until 1st July. Get a grip and give the manager a chance to do his job and stop reading the bloody newspapers, they are full of crap especially where Villa are concerned as MON and Randy are pretty tight-lipped about the running of the club. If the Newspapers were even romotely right about half of what they print most players not recently signed (to a new contract) would be playing at at least 4 different clubs in the same season. It's 99% bollox and I only ever read it for entertainment value and looking for direct quotes. When there are direct quotes then the article may have some credibility but even then it's often just posturing.

Lennon is only any good at running with the ball - not the perfect attributes for a right winger. I'd rather have Gabby on the right wing than him. I admit the thought of Young, Gabby and Henry on the counter is mighty impressive though!! Well said Villan of the north.

Well all I know, VVV, is that so far MON has guided us to 5 league places higher than the previous season in both of his seasons at the helm so far. No I was not overly impressed with his transfer window activities but I have, thankfully, been proved wrong, as have you and many other. Based on this and the fact that the TW is not officially even open yet I am willing to concede that MON knows better. If, at the end of season 3 with him in the manager's seat, everything has gone wrong due to a lack of signings than I will be calling for his resignation along with many others as it will be a situation of his own making but until such a time I will trust him to do what he has done so far, make the right decisions.

Just a little extra note to underline my first post. Please stop believing what you read in the newspapers/internet. They are clearly the root of most of our dis-satisfaction and unrealistic expectations.

Martin Laursen's sentiments are echoed by everyone connected with the club. MON has things under control, of that I have no doubt.

Not sure about Lennon. He has his moments admittedly, but personally I'd rather we steer well clear of him.
