Villa NOT Resigned To Barry Leaving

Reports yesterday - which I chose to ignore as they were all way off the mark in my opinion and putting 2+2 from quotes together and making 62 - said that Villa were resigned to letting Gareth Barry go to Liverpool and would accept a poultry 14million for him. The General, in our forum (Click Here), has since poured scorn on the reports.

The Villa director said:

'I have read the reports. They are NOT true! No deal has been struck AT ALL and certainly not for a ridiculously low price as quoted. We will probably continue to see specious articles...just know that when I know, you all will know. I cannot promise more than that. I will say that the article is not true.'

Meanwhile, in an article by Lisa Smith in The Post, Stan Collymore says Barry will make the right decision but might have to be selfish for once having been a great servant to Villa.

Adding, 'Villa have never had any problems with Gareth. He has been a great captain and a great player and as long as the club get the right money for him then I don’t think there will be many Villa fans who will begrudge Gareth going if he decides to join Rafa Benitez at Anfield.'

He also says that some fans are resigned to losing Barry but 'it still wouldn’t surprise me if Martin O’Neill managed to persuade him to stay. There isn’t one other manager in the Premier League who could do that but Martin could. I don’t think it is about money with Gareth. I genuinely don’t. He knows he is highly paid as it is. I think if someone could wave a magic wand and say this time next year that Villa would be in the Champions League, then I think that would be enough of an incentive for him to stay.'

Finishing that with Barry now 27 you can understand why he wants to sample the Champions League and sticking up for his mate says 'Loyalty of the kind Gareth has shown for the last ten years is rare in these times.'

Can't argue with that!

you can either look at the GB situation as being boring or really complex. i reckon it is the latter, and for obvious reasons. the guy must be feeling this in a big way and it is his call, what sort of pressure is that?!

Would agree to a certain extent, but the transfer fee will be the only real sticking point as far as i can see. Carrick 18m, what price Gareth?

I am mightily relieved to read the General's statement. That will teach me to even begin to believe what I read in the newspapers. I must learn to keep my assumptions under control.

As long as Liverpool make insulting bids and try to do this on their terms then Barry cant argue.

I was very happy to see the General's comments as well. I'm sure the General has passed on all of our thoughts and comments to Randy and MON. We actually have a club where the fans opinion counts we must not forget that. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed Laursen is an ever present in this coming season, top player...tempted to have his name on the back of my new shirt... :)

According to reports, at this moment in time Liverpool are a little strapped for cash, so GB ain't going anywhere.

Newcastle are the latest club to have a pop at the Pool scum for making another derogatory bid for Milner involving "cast-off" players. Why doesn't everyone just play hardball with them - if they've got no cash, how can they believe they can push everyone around like this??

That's exactly it, Liverpool are skint, their only assets are mediocre players and the lure of the chamions league. A few more years with Rafa and the 2 chairmen fighting they'll be left with just the mediocre players.

To be quite honest I'm preparing myself for the worst and I have the mind set that Barry will leave. Only because itll make it less painful IF it happens. :)

I'm less concerned with Barry leaving than I am with the lack of spending on the required quality players to stop this sort of thing happening again. Isn't this the real issue behind barry situation? Villa need to make a statement of intent by signing top quality players. I would be happy with 18 Mill for Barry and a more than adequate relpacement. Can't see Liverpool affording it though.

As much as I love the guy and what he's doen for us over the past ten years, if now is the time to move on then so be it. What galls me is the way in which it is being done and to be frank it ******ing stinks. Liverpool unsettle the player who subsequently rethinks his position (or rather has his Mr 10 percent in his ear to get him do so), Liverpool put in a derogatory bid which further unsettles the player, player goes to see boss and demands move (not happened yet but we'll see), Villa either accept bid or put up with an under-performing, demotivated player. It's not just the scousers either. From United (and am I glad to see Madrid getting on Ferguson's goat over Ronaldo) to just about everyone else in the game. Also, I could stomach GB going to another club which has a chance of winning things but Liverpool aren't really a shoo in for anything with those two clowns and a cheap Tom Jones impersonator in charge! Ruining my summer this is!

Rawlie: Underperforming and de-motivated player is NOT Barry, not least because he loves playing for England and knows he will have to continue perform to keep his England place for the world cup. That aside, I really don't think the situation you describe will arise. Barry knows the situation, has said as much, which is, in case anybody still doesn't get it, if Villa do not accept a bid from Liverpool Barry stays. It really is that simple, despite all the thousands of words that have been written about it, and it is my understanding that Barry wouldn't be unhappy to stay anyway.

All Villa have to do is refuse to sell a player under contract. It's easily done folks. MON has to if you wish to qualify for Europe.

I wonder if this saga is why MON is on the Beeb in Austria? Randy leaves the football to MON, he's in Austria, no-one can contact him, no issue to deal with for three weeks! The pressure will be building on the Manuel and the red scum, specially if the offers for Gareths best mate start coming in.

Jonah; If what you say is true that GB is above demotivation for what ever the reason, How do you explain the performance against Wigan? The bid for GB clearly had an effect on the entire team that day...

So you know for a fact that the poor performance against Wigan was down to demotivation then do you gappy? So where have you seen Barry say he wants to leave? "unless an offer is accepted there is no decision to make" His words not mine.

Has a bid been accepted? No. Has Barry said he wants to leave? No. Have the papers said he is leaving? Yes. Why are we believing all the papertalk, boys and girls pull yourselves together ffs. Until a bid is accepted, he isnt going anywhere.

Part of me thinks Gareth has no intention of leaving and that his agent is just holding Villa to ransom for everything they can get before agreeing a new deal. And Gareth could kill off this entire subject by simply saying "I don't want to go to Liverpool". Antother possibility is that Gareth might be holding out to try and pressure the club into signing top class footballers? Conspiracy theories anyone??

I do believe that MON said after the game against Wigan it was due to the bid from Liverpool!!!! I want Barry to stay the same as everyone else.... But if he wanted to stay then he would have made noises to put all our minds at ease. except he hasn't, in fact he has made noises about playing champions league football, and about thats the way to stay in the England squad. That doesn't sound like the kind of noises coming from a man who wants to stay put. Hemay well be trying to gain a better contract but if i'm honest I think he is going.... I hope i'm wrong but I don't think so...

Anyway since when has a bid being accepted had any bearing on what happens in the end. Remember Yorke????? We had to accept a bid in the end there was no other option...

Whether the club is not resigned to losing Gareth, while immaterial really, is a positive sign at least. All too often in the past, we've allowed our better quality players to move with barely a whimper.

The thing is though, if Gareth's heart is no longer at Villa Park, which seemingly it isn't, surely its better that he be allowed to move on?
