Gareth Barry - Captain Of Club & Country

ASTON VILLA PLAYER Gareth Barry won his 20th cap last night in the 3-0 England win over Trinidad & Tobago and managed to score his first international goal. To add to the joy he took over in the second half as captain as David Beckham was brought off.

Gareth, who some say is now returning to England to decide his Villa future (the decision lies with the club last time I looked, but I get the reports drift!) said on the official site:

'It is a fantastic way to end the season for myself. To get my first international goal and then lead my country out in the second half made it a fantastic day all round and one that I probably will never forget. We have to be realistic and say that it is still early days but we are learning under Fabio all the time and that is the important thing.'

Meanwhile Alan Hansen, the BBC pundit and former Liverpool defender, praised Barry to high heaven at half time and at the end of the game. He said 'Barry did remarkably well.' Adding, 'The great thing for him is that he has given the manager a problem. It is great for the manager if he has options, but even in qualification Barry played particularly well and I think he is there to stay.'

And on the Liverpool link he said: 'I think he would be great for Liverpool, there is a real partnership developing there with Steven Gerrard. But, in my opinion, he is not what Liverpool need. What they need is a wide player with tons and tons of pace.'

Former Newcastle legend Alan Shearer was also full of praise saying he looked comfortable in the team, passes the ball well and 'he looks at home there.'

Just shows, with Ashley Young also making an appearance and Gabby Agbonlahor on the bench, you can be at Villa AND make the England team. Think on Gareth before you make a jump to a club in turmoil!

And he did it as an Aston Villa FC player, and within 2 seasons under MON. If thats no progress what is? Barry - I think you will be making a mistake if you leave. The grass is not always greener on the other side!

Totally agree, he is becoming an England regular, puts pay to the myth that Villa players can't make England especially with Young (on as a sub) and Gabby (unused) also in on the act.

That certainly is a myth Fear, Villa actually hold the record for being the team who have provided more England internationals than any other. 66 at the moment.

If he goes to the Pool, then more fool him. I honestly believe he'll regret it.

It was great to see Gareth performing as we all know he can.Every week the Villa faithful have been campaigning for his inclusion with England. We supported him for years. His heart is Claret and Blue and this is his home, and with the progress under MON you would be a fool to not see the tide turning at VP.Just for giggles, it would be funny to see the irony of him leaving and we pip them to 4th next year. That would be some rough justice.Yipppee I oweeee, Yipppeee I aye, Holtenders in the skyyyyy...UTV

I'm not sure how much more of this speculation I can take, i'm not even sleeping properly! Please Gareth, put all our minds at ease. This is his home and he now has the chance to become a Villa AND England Legend with a job for life. Liverpool can't promise him CL football either, he'll always be looking over his shoulder as they're always on the look out for someone bigger and better.

Totally agree with the other comments here. Why risk his success for the sake of a move that may not work out? Every thing has been achieved at Villa - so why move when more money is on the table and the team is being built around him.

More like another 2mil I'd say. So much is going right for GB at the moment and he is still a Villa player. It proves the point that you dont have to move to a "bigger club" to make it. Well done Gareth we are soooo proud of you. Now offer him 70k a week and get on with next season please MON.

i'm still seeing articles that are suggesting he will go for 12-15m. If he wants to go, then fine (although I really don't want him to) - but if we accept a bid below the valuation of Alonso (talking about 18m) then I wouldn't be able to accept that, and more fool us. Rafa clearly believes he is better than Alonso - hence he should cost more. QED.

Looks like he is off according to all papers today. England Captain, goalscorer and the only member to play in every game of 2007-2008. Got to be worth at least 20 mil. In the past teams didn't have to sell unless the buying team made an offer that you couldn't turn down. That is why the Scousers have gone through the media, because they can't afford to make that kind of offer. Hold out MON, no mercy.

Gareth Barry - Captain Of Club & Country ... not really ,Gerrards our captain.....oh you meant when he used to be a villa player instead of LIVERPOOL new number 7 ..... we can start thinkin new songs for barry , can you tell us how they go!................................Liverpool Tempt Me, Admits Barry, “Just to think about it makes it a tough decision,” bemoaned Barry. “There's so much to lose at Aston Villa. I've been there more than ten years, got a good rapport with the fans, I'm captain there and have a great relationship with the manager. “But Champions League football helps any player. You only have to look at the England squad to see the amount of players who get in the squad and start the games - the majority play in the Champions League. That's all about the decision that will have to be made. "Liverpool are in the Champions League and Villa are trying to push for that. That's all part of my decision if a bid gets accepted.”

No doubt about it, Gareth has done pretty well for himself these past two seasons, ably assisted by MON and his coaching staff. Whatever happens in the future, he's been a very good servant to the Aston Villa cause, and has fully deserved the plaudits that have came his way. However, if now is time for the parting of the ways, then so be it. We're moving onwards and upwards, with or without Gareth Barry.
