'If It's Football, It's Vital'

The Villa Times - 29/05/2008

Unoial Villa News...

Our last poll asked How many players will Villa buy this summer?! The votes were fairly split but the majority, with 37%, are expecting 5-7. 24% are more positive saying 8 or more, which to be fair, with the amount of departures we've had again, is surely the minimum needed if we are to try to challenge in the domestic and Uefa cup next season, we won't surely enjoy the same luck as we did last season with injuries? Full results: So How Many Players Will Villa Buy?

Our latest poll asks if Villa captain Gareth Barry will be with Villa come next season following speculation linking him with Liverpool and Chelsea.

Talking about Gareth Barry, the England international says he doesn't know if he'll be at Villa next season, 'That is something I've been speaking to the manager and chairman about. We've already had one meeting. My idea was to get these two games out of the way and I am sure we will be speaking again soon.' Full quotes: Barry 'Will I Be At Villa Next Season?'

Paul Merson told Sky Sports News that he still holds Villa in his affections and believes they should go for a player like Thierry Henry to help us make the next level. Would be lovely but I can't see him going anywhere unless Arsenal go back in for him.

Meanwhile on the BBC WM radio Stan Collymore says Gareth Barry faces a very difficult decision. 'Does he go to Liverpool and guaranteed Champions League football or stick with Martin O'Neill hoping Villa get there? It's a decision I wouldn't want to have to make to be honest.'

According to the press, the race is on for Villa striker Marlon Harewood with Rangers, Fulham, Wigan and Stoke. Villa Striker Has No Shortage Of Suitors.

According to The Guardian Villa are interested in Atlético Madrid's Greek right-back Giourkas Seitaridis.

A report in the Plain Dealer has Randy Lerner denying that he will be buying property and spending more time in the Midlands to take on the CEO role at Villa. In the report by Plain Dealer reporter Mary Kay Cabot they have an email response with the Villa and Cleveland Browns owner denying the reports from yesterday that he'll be taking a more hands on role at Villa. The Telegraph have an article today on 'What the Deloitte Annual Review of Football Finance means for the top four and the rest of the Premier League.' Aston Villa: Villa finished the 2006/07 season with the fifth highest assets in the country (£35 million) and increased their home match attendances to 94.8 per cent of their 40,375 capacity stadium. They were also one of the top six investors in facilities in that season, injecting £9.9 million. However, their wage expenditure exceeded the income generated from revenue, leaving them £1.2 million in deficit. The club also recorded £63 million of debt in the summer of 2007. Every time I warm to this player he opens his mouth and ruins it! Shaun Maloney has once again stalked about his future after ONCE AGAIN being linked to a return to Celtic. The Scotland international midfielder, who seems to forget he is paid by Villa and surely shouldn't be rambling on in the press about not being happy said: 'I've got something to think about. I have started to enjoy the club down south but I've just not played and I don't think that's ideal.' Full article: Maloney - Just Shut Up And Fight For Place

Patrick Berger has sealed a two year deal to return to his former club Sparta Prague. 'I wanted to come back at some point anyway and so I decided the time was right now,' he told iDnes.

Thought for the day: Being over the hill is better than being under it.

Lots to get our teeth into and mull over, but still no hint of a signing. Two or three at least during the month of June would be nice. Nowhere near enough, but nice.
