O'Neill Unimpressed With Meaningless Games

Martin O'Neill says the season is dragging on for the Premiership players because of the needless friendlies including our English contingent who face the USA and Trinidad & Tobago.

The Villa boss told the official site:

'Some of the players were saying that the annoyance is not so much in coming back a day or two earlier, it is actually having meaningless friendly games almost three weeks after the season's over. Players who really should be sitting on a beach by now are still having to think about friendly games that don't mean anything. John Carew's playing for Norway for instance and Norway haven't qualified for the Euros. The same goes with the two England games.'

He labels the games 'meaningless' and says it just runs the risk of injuries to the players.

Nothing that is going to change any day soon though is it? The game could do with many changes but those in charge aren't interested in bringing it into the modern era! Must admit the international games seem to be taking on less and less importance as the years pass, especially with the quality of 'captain' they choose these days to represent our country!

I quite agree - we're out of EURO 2008 so let's just give our boys a well earned (?) extended break!

And a couple of more meaningless friendlies you'd be hard pushed to ever imagine. Cant understand how any advantages or plus points can be gained by lining up at the end of a long, hard domestic season, against such inferior opposition. The players dont want the games, the supporters obviously dont. Sheer madness, particularly if someone picks up a serious long term injury that carries over into next season.

i personaly think MoN has got this wrong hes obviously a team manager worried about his international players and its understandable, for 1 i dont agree with Merlin its hardly deserved for the players to get an extended break for not being good enough to qualify for euros and 2 how can we expect englands finest to gel together and learn the new tactics without these "meaningless freindlies"?
Astonian Villan
Sod the national team Astonian Villan. I want our lads fully refreshed for the 2008-09 campaign. AVFC is my one and only priority I'm afraid. I'll take success for us over success for the national team any day of the week.

good point glensider, i retract my argument
