Martin Laursen - Villa MUST Spend

Villa's defensive rock Martin Laursen has called for quality signings this summer to help push the club forward for the 2008/2009 season.

The former AC Milan man said in the Express & Star:

'The requirement is to get good players and they’re not cheap. So we need a lot of money to buy good players and to buy the right players. That’s the manager’s job, but he needs a lot of money because, if not, we can’t compete with the big clubs. We’ve proved we can do very well with a small group of players and this squad has a lot of potential. So we need some more quality players.'

He adds that if we make the Uefa Cup via the inter-two-bob, that the current squad is nowhere near strong enough warns we were lucky last season injury wise:

'We haven’t had any injuries and if we are going to play in Europe that would be a big ask, because a lot of us have international games as well.'

He also mentions in another report that Villa need around 8 players, sounds about right to me!

Our current poll asks how many players Villa will get this transfer window, hopefully starting with an arrival or two in the next few weeks!

As the Express article points out, we have already lost Thomas Sorensen, Patrik Berger and Olof Mellberg, so are -3 in an already tiny squad.

Martin is airing sentiments no doubt shared by the whole squad. Everyone connected with the club knows and appreciates the fact that this is a very important summer, transfer window wise, for us. We musn't come up short.
