Thierry Henry, Justin Hoyte, Sidwell To Villa

Thierry Henry, Justin Hoyte, Sidwell To Villa

Ok, plenty in the papers today, 75% or more is probably total rot, but hey, I love the transfer rumours!

First off, the News of the World is confident we have two players incoming in done deals.

They claim that Villa have bid £7million for Chelsea and former Reading midfielder Steve Sidwell. Villa were in the hunt for him before Chelsea bid last time and since then he has spent most of his time warming their bench. The report suggests this is a done deal.

Their other claim is that Villa are back in the hunt for 23-year-old Arsenal right-back (who has also played at left-back) Justin Hoyte. We apparently tried for him last season but couldn't prize him away from the Gunners at the time.

Both rumour ratings? Fairly high I'd think. MON has a proven track record of wanting young British talent and obviously we desperately need a right-back and Hoyte needs to be playing regular first team football in order to push for an England place.

The News of the World also suggests that supposed Villa target (mentioned in swap deals for Barry at one point) John Arne Riise will move abroad, Schalke being a possible destination.

The Sunday Mercury have a wild claim here. They say we are after former Arsenal legend and Barcelona striker Thierry Henry. Other reports suggest he might join the Major League Soccer for mega money.

Rumour rating: Would be worth a punt but I just can't see it myself!

The Daily Star claim that Liverpool are prepared to drop the price for goalkeeper Scott Carson to a price in the region of £6million. They say that at that price, 'Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is ready to pounce.'

Rumour rating: Possible, we do need two keepers afterall and he is a young keeper who will get better over time, as he himself has admitted.

The Daily Star also repeat the rumour that Villa are interested in Portsmouth midfielder Pedro Mendes who is apparently going to be available in a 'cut-price deal'.

Rumour rating? No idea at all. Here is an interview I did with the Vital Pompey editor: Click Here

In other tittle tattle, the NofW say Liverpool will go for Boro midfielder Stewart Downing if they can't get Gareth Barry. Barry is apparently still their main target but a price tag of £18million is putting them off.

And finally, the Sunday Mirror say that Nicolas Anelka might be ditched by Chelsea. Hmmmm, I wonder!

If Brummagem pick up Lee Carsley from Everton, lets attempt to take Seb Larsson off their hands. Now thats a player I would really love to see at Villa Park.

Names that probably aren't even on MON's radar, but they make interesting reading and encourage debate and discussion if nothing else. Sidwell I wouldn't mind, while Hoyte doesn't actually thrill me, whereas Henry is a definite non-starter.

Every one is saying Steve Sidwell is not good and so on. But didnt we all think Young was a waste of money Harewood was useless and Reo-Coker was a waste of money......Look at them now MON knows what he is doing

we should mess liverpool and get downing ourselves for 12m, Sidwell bargain that down to 5m, if we get carson does the 1.7m we paid count towards the 6m fee? Henry would be very worthwhile for imaging rights, increasing awareness and for his finishing; might help gabby learn some things

Usual suspect, it was gregory who refused to pay the extra half a million for Keane...he didnt think he was worth it.
18/05/2008 22:05:00
yes, take the point Saurat, what I was meaning is goalkeepers peak at a far later age than other players and he is nowhere near the finished product, so to have attained England status already and with the amount of development left to go through, he should get better over time. No guarantee with any player though, quite agree.
