'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Thierry Henry, Justin Hoyte, Sidwell To Villa

Ok, plenty in the papers today, 75% or more is probably total rot, but hey, I love the transfer rumours!

First off, the News of the World is confident we have two players incoming in done deals.

They claim that Villa have bid 7million for Chelsea and former Reading midfielder Steve Sidwell. Villa were in the hunt for him before Chelsea bid last time and since then he has spent most of his time warming their bench. The report suggests this is a done deal.

Their other claim is that Villa are back in the hunt for 23-year-old Arsenal right-back (who has also played at left-back) Justin Hoyte. We apparently tried for him last season but couldn't prize him away from the Gunners at the time.

Both rumour ratings? Fairly high I'd think. MON has a proven track record of wanting young British talent and obviously we desperately need a right-back and Hoyte needs to be playing regular first team football in order to push for an England place.

The News of the World also suggests that supposed Villa target (mentioned in swap deals for Barry at one point) John Arne Riise will move abroad, Schalke being a possible destination.

The Sunday Mercury have a wild claim here. They say we are after former Arsenal legend and Barcelona striker Thierry Henry. Other reports suggest he might join the Major League Soccer for mega money.

Rumour rating: Would be worth a punt but I just can't see it myself!

The Daily Star claim that Liverpool are prepared to drop the price for goalkeeper Scott Carson to a price in the region of 6million. They say that at that price, 'Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is ready to pounce.'

Rumour rating: Possible, we do need two keepers afterall and he is a young keeper who will get better over time, as he himself has admitted.

The Daily Star also repeat the rumour that Villa are interested in Portsmouth midfielder Pedro Mendes who is apparently going to be available in a 'cut-price deal'.

Rumour rating? No idea at all. Here is an interview I did with the Vital Pompey editor: Click Here

In other tittle tattle, the NofW say Liverpool will go for Boro midfielder Stewart Downing if they can't get Gareth Barry. Barry is apparently still their main target but a price tag of 18million is putting them off.

And finally, the Sunday Mirror say that Nicolas Anelka might be ditched by Chelsea. Hmmmm, I wonder!

I think the Sidwell deal would be good for both of us! ;)
Fan of Blues
what did chelsea pay for Sidwell? Has he been poor or just not had a chance with the array of talent you guys have?
The Fear
Chelsea got him for free. He's had ballack, essien, fat frank ahead of him. He's a decent player but he's not THAT good.
johnnyuk
We got him on a free transfer! ;) To be fair, he wasn't given much chances to prove himself. But when he was playing, I felt he was intimidated by the likes of Lampard and Ballack. Never had it in him to take a shot on goal for instance, unlike his days at Reading!
Fan of Blues
FRANK ISN'T FAT!!!! ;))
Fan of Blues
Must admit I just don't see him as 'the next level' for us. Looked good at Reading but then, he was a big fish there. Oh, and if Frank is fat, I seriously need to go on a diet! To think we missed out on Lampard thanks to old Dougy boy before Chelsea got him!
The Fear
We missed out on a lot of players because of old Douggy. Robbie Keane is the first to come to mind
The Usual Suspect
Where would Sidwell fit in? With Reo Coker and Barry, we need an attacking centre midfielder not another box to box type player. Can see the Hoyte one, plus Carr too on a free. Not sure if we will sign Carson, only time will tell. Henry? Not a chance, hope so though.
young_jonah
To be fair to Doug on the Keane one, I think that was JG. He said he made a mistake there (and added that so did all the other PL managers who missed him) but that the few times he went to Wolves to watch him, he had awful games so he wasn't confident enough to push due to the fee being asked!
The Fear
I would like to see Sidwell at VP and Hunt to come to think of it. I think Carson would be a bad signing look at him this season, he did not look confident or as if he thought he would stop the on coming ball once this season at any point. I think we should try for Igor Akinfeev or Stipe Pletikosa sure then are pricey but look at the importance of a good, strong keeper who give the back 4 confidence and then look at the number of points we lost over the years due to back keepers: such as Carson and Enkelman. I have no doubt that one day Carson will be great but that is a long, long , long way away when he sorts out his head, I just think the price is to high for someone not worth a first 11 place for at least 10 seasons.
Tallaght Villan
Look at the articles from the season Enkelman was our number one, he keep us in so many games, he made a couple of mistakes against the blues and that is all he will be remembered for, shame cause he wasnt actually that bad.
young_jonah
It was funny to see people slagging Arsene Wenger off for letting Sidwell go after Chelsea got him ..... but once again his decision has been vindicated. I'd love to see Henry at Villa, it would make me smile!!! But I'm pretty sure there's only one English team he'd play for.

Spurs? ;)

I think Sidwell is a signing we cant miss out on,he is going to be a very good addition to whoever gets him but for 7m! Still hope we get him.
Pking
i like the tasty little morsel down the bottom "Anelka ditched by chelsea". nice to see him at VP. Sidwell as well. Hoyte as a backup to the other right back we sign, which Miguel would slot nicely into.
leftfoot
Rocky7 knows his stuff. we all know Henry is heading to pompey this summer ;-). he looked good last timee had a pompey shirt on, and he will look good again :D

"...Possible, we do need two keepers afterall and he [Carson] is a young keeper who will get better over time" Sorry Fear, but this is pure supposition. There is absolutely no law that says he will get better over time. He may even get worse, if that's possible.
Saurat
yes, take the point Saurat, what I was meaning is goalkeepers peak at a far later age than other players and he is nowhere near the finished product, so to have attained England status already and with the amount of development left to go through, he should get better over time. No guarantee with any player though, quite agree.
The Fear
Usual suspect, it was gregory who refused to pay the extra half a million for Keane...he didnt think he was worth it.
themightyatom
we should mess liverpool and get downing ourselves for 12m, Sidwell bargain that down to 5m, if we get carson does the 1.7m we paid count towards the 6m fee? Henry would be very worthwhile for imaging rights, increasing awareness and for his finishing; might help gabby learn some things

Everyone Has Missed Out Decco,, Go On The Villa Website Transfers And Decco Is Are Main Target Now,, 17Million Bed Has Been Placed!

Bid* Not Bed
Blitz
I don't see anything about Decco....as much as I hate looking at him, it send the right message. good player.
los_angeles_villan
Sidwell useful, Hoyte too. Will be happy to add these to our squad.
leelindsay
Every one is saying Steve Sidwell is not good and so on. But didnt we all think Young was a waste of money Harewood was useless and Reo-Coker was a waste of money......Look at them now MON knows what he is doing
d123ryan
Names that probably aren't even on MON's radar, but they make interesting reading and encourage debate and discussion if nothing else. Sidwell I wouldn't mind, while Hoyte doesn't actually thrill me, whereas Henry is a definite non-starter.

If Brummagem pick up Lee Carsley from Everton, lets attempt to take Seb Larsson off their hands. Now thats a player I would really love to see at Villa Park.
