Pompey Opinion On The Mendes To Villa Link

I was curious after seeing Villa being linked with Portsmouth midfielder Pedro Mendes. I wondered, if he isn't quite good enough to fit into the Pompey team, how could he be good enough for us.

So, I thought why not go to the horses mouth, now Pedro isn't on my email list, but the Vital Pompey ed is, so I asked the ever cool PompeyRug for his opinions.

1) What do you think Villa being linked to Pedro Mendes, any truth in it do you think?

You have been linked to him several times before so it could be a goer - I think he will almost certainly leave Fratton this summer sadly, so Villa Park could quite possibly be his next stop, although rumour has it he wants to go back to Portugal?

2) I'm not totally sure why Villa would want him if he isn't good enough to hold down a regular place at Pompey, but the manager knows best. What is your opinion of him, are you surprised he has slipped down your pecking order.

I have similar thoughts in as much as 'if Villa think he is good enough for them, why is he not good enough for Pompey?' I think he is a fantastic footballer who I would have in my team but he does not fit into the Harry Redknapp thinking at the moment - he likes the big, strong, powerful types... this is all good and well but where is the craft? Something that Mendes has plenty of!

3) Would you be sorry to see him go and if he did go, what would be a reasonable fee would you think?

I would be absolutely gutted, but I have just about accepted that he will be gone this summer, to be honest I thought he would leave in January. Reports says that his home has been up for sale for some time now, so I think it is a near nailed on thing that the man that kick started our great escape in 2005/06 is going. Paper say a 'cut price deal' could happen, sod that why do a cut price deal for a player of his quality?

He got a cracking reception last weekend when he came off, hopefully he can sign off with a cup winners medal though, although I doubt he will start - even if I think he should...

Like the reversal of the question Rug, very good point if he is good enough for Villa, why isn't he good enough for Pompey. Very positive interview!

Yes we are a bit surprised by this. He is a good squad player at Pompey & will be a good squad palyer for Villa. But why move?

Mendes is quite a defensive passer of the ball and tends to pass back or sideways rather than risk losing the ball with a risky attacking pass. This doesn't suit our beloved HR, he like it more in your face, hence Diop, Muntari and Diarra tend to get the nod. The problem is our (Pompey's) attacking midfield loses posession far too often with Diop and Muntari the main culprits. I think Mendes would sit well you guys, especially if you manage to keep Barry who like Mendes is extremely elegant and laid back.

Good rival for Petrov.

Yep, well worth taking on, probably a reasonable fee too.

Is that a photo of Juan Pablo Angel in a pompey shirt?

Positive vibes there from our Pompey friend, he's certainly set me thinking about re-evaluating my initial thoughts when I read the rumour that we might be looking at the player. Anyone know how old he is? I always thought that he was getting on in years, 30-31 maybe? That would be a concern to me.

personally - i wouldnt let him go - but i can see why harry would. he is not a pompey reject, much more skillfull than bullard (sorry - he just is) - and if you can get him, go for it, as i hate to see him rotting away in our team. in regards to a price, harry is a buy low, sell low kind of person, so you could probably get him for around 2 million. much less than his value.
