Villa Clinch 6th Spot And Inter-Two-Bob

Villa have ended the season in 6th place and earning them an Inter Two Bob Cup place.

So from 11th last season to just missing out on 5th. Not a bad season all in all and some real highs in the process including beating Chelsea and obviously the local derby victories.

To see us progress five places AND to still feel slightly disappointed at not gaining 5th is amazing really - just those few 'no shows' (Fulham away, Sunderland, Boro and Wigan at home) and possibly a lack of spending in January stopped us clinching that most unlikely lofty position and hopefully, after a summer of spending (please, lets have a summer of spending) who knows where we can get next season?

So we have a run in the inter to look forward to. The format has changed so we are only one two-legged tie away from the Uefa qualifying round. Our opponents will come from Northern Ireland, Denmark or Finland. According to the official site the first leg will be away July 19 or 20.

and another new image for Vital Villa. Hurrah!

Well done Villa. A Great season. Just limped over the finishing line rather than sprinting over it. MON and his team have done a great job. It all just needs to be backed up in the transfer window. I can't wait!!!!

This has been an amazing season. Sod's law that we finish sixth in the first year for ages that sixth isn't a UEFA Cup spot! But we can build on this next year, consolidate our Top 6 position and see where we can go from here.

Also... 2006: 16th. 2007: 11th. 2008: 6th. 2009: 1st?
IanSymes
ha I noticed that pattern too!

Can someone clarify the Intertoto to Uefa transistion for me? I understand we are in the 3rd round of Intertoto only needing to win one 2 legged match. Does that put us in the first or second round of Uefa qualifying before the group stages? I noticed blackburn last year went from intertoto to second round of qualifying where they lost. How many sets of matches do we need to win to get to the group stage?
los_angeles_villan
By the way the team from N.I. are Cliftonville (who finsihed 3rd in Irish League. They play a side from Finland in the first round. Winners play a team from Denmark then the winners of THAT game play us in a two-legged Intertoto Cup final!!! Should be straightforward enough. We should be able to beat the champions of those countries never mind the 3rd 4th or 5th placed sides!!!
deano.avfc
We win the intertwobob cup and we're straight into the UEFA cup proper.
Gazvilla
the team from here is distillery(who finished 4th in irish league)and i would expect to beat them very easily over 2 legs. c'mon the villa!!!!

Could someone explain the phrase "Inter-Two-Bob" to me?
Knowone
Knowone, I assume you're not from the UK? Until the early 70's there was a different selection of coins in the UK, and one of the smaller ones was known as the shilling, or in slang as 'bob': "here, Dave, lend me two bob would you...". Thank goodness for the decimal system, introduced in '73. According to the offical site, should we win 2 legged game we'll be through to the 2nd qualifying round, as per blackburn last year. It'll be interesting to see if Barry goes by the time we play these games, as he'll be cup tied for champions league games if he gets a game in them I think.
lorenzo
There is one thing that had not been mentioned about the Intertwobob. Our opposition has a godd chance of coming from the Nordic region. We can't take this too lightly as it is important to remember that both Denmark and Finland play summer football, meaning that their season will be well underway and they will be as sharp and competative as they ever will be. We must give them respect or they will turn us over.
Villan Of The North
[picky mode]The decimal system was introduced into the UK in 1971[/picky mode] :o)
Villan Of The North
Lorenzo, MON should make sure he plays Barry then.
Villan Of The North
Lorenzo, thanks for the heads up. You're assuming right, I'm from Norway. Would have been great to have the Villa come visiting. :D
Knowone
Looked up the UEFA Cup format so the steps to the final (!) are: 1 - Two leg Intertoto final; 2 - Two leg 2nd Qual round; 3 - Two leg first round; 4 - Four games in group stages (1 each against rest of group);5 - top 3 go into last 32 (incl Champ Lge rejects), meaning four more two leg matches to the final. That's 18 games to get to the final - another half a season. Add another half a dozen players to the summer shopping list.

Also... 2006: 16th. 2007: 11th. 2008: 6th. 2009: 1st? I pointed this out when I predicted 6th at the start of the season. My prediction for next seasons is 1st. Everyone laughed at me when I predicted 6th at teh start of this season. Laugh again at your peril!!!

If you'd have offered me those two 'prizes' back in August, before a ball had been kicked in anger, I'd have snapped your hand off. Thoroughly enjoyable season.
