Martin O'Neill has said his number one job this summer is convincing Gareth Barry to stay at Villa.
'A player of Gareth's undoubted quality and ability would take some replacing, so keeping him at Aston Villa is as important as anything we do in the transfer market.'
He also sees no reason why we can't progress and attract more quality to the club. Hopefully this summer these words won't come back to haunt him, although I must admit I am optimistic of a good summer of transfers this year, he knows EXACTLY what is needed now and has also offloaded the players he didn't rate or want.
He told the official site: 'I want to really keep the progress going. We want to try and step forward again and we're looking to add that extra quality to the quality that we have. We definitely need more. That gets harder as you go along because you're trying to add to a better side. But we're trying to progress and we have got to do it, otherwise we wouldn't just stand still, we would probably regress. There's no standing still in Premier League football because there's always someone looking over your shoulder.'
I think he is totally right, get Barry to commit longer term and other targets will surely be easier to attract? I still say if he signalled his intent with a longer contract it might then be easier to convince others to do so.
On the subject of Barry, Vital Villa asked if you thought the Villa skipper would leave this summer.
66% said yes. 23% no and 11% thought it was in the balance. I guess we'll soon find out, the transfer window opens when the season ends on Sunday.
COME ON VILLA !
