O'Neill On Barry And Summer Transfers

Martin O'Neill has said his number one job this summer is convincing Gareth Barry to stay at Villa.

'A player of Gareth's undoubted quality and ability would take some replacing, so keeping him at Aston Villa is as important as anything we do in the transfer market.'

He also sees no reason why we can't progress and attract more quality to the club. Hopefully this summer these words won't come back to haunt him, although I must admit I am optimistic of a good summer of transfers this year, he knows EXACTLY what is needed now and has also offloaded the players he didn't rate or want.

He told the official site: 'I want to really keep the progress going. We want to try and step forward again and we're looking to add that extra quality to the quality that we have. We definitely need more. That gets harder as you go along because you're trying to add to a better side. But we're trying to progress and we have got to do it, otherwise we wouldn't just stand still, we would probably regress. There's no standing still in Premier League football because there's always someone looking over your shoulder.'

I think he is totally right, get Barry to commit longer term and other targets will surely be easier to attract? I still say if he signalled his intent with a longer contract it might then be easier to convince others to do so.

On the subject of Barry, Vital Villa asked if you thought the Villa skipper would leave this summer.

66% said yes. 23% no and 11% thought it was in the balance. I guess we'll soon find out, the transfer window opens when the season ends on Sunday.

COME ON VILLA !

Linked with Stephen Carr today.....i'm sure that's one to get our Gareth all juiced up and excited....(ahem)

Casting my mind back twelve months ago I was talking with friends and predicting who Villa would sign in the summer. All the players I spoke about moved club, but NONE to the Villa! Craig Gordon went to Sunderland. Luke Young to Boro. Matt Taylor to Bolton. Diarra and Defoe to Portsmouth and a rather stupid suggestion of Wesley Sneider who ended up at Real Madrid! I thought those six players would be perfect acquisitions at the time. We will need at LEAST six players this summer, but I am useless at predicting who, so I shall just wait and see..and hope!

I was at the Wigan game and I have to say I got the impression that Barry was saying just as much goodbye as Olly. Hope i'm wrong

MON comes across as a sadistic type of person at this time of the year. His promises of new members to the squad never come to fruition but he still makes them and he is torturing the fans in the process. There is no doubting his ability to get the best out of a bunch of lads who are good players and will give 110% (most of the time,) but can he make the leap to managing world class superstars?? I hope so but am slightly doubtful.

"'A player of Gareth's undoubted quality and ability would take some replacing, so keeping him at Aston Villa is as important as anything we do in the transfer market.'" - Does he not realise that it is what we do in the transfer market that could ultimately determine whether he stays or not?!!?!? ARRGGHH!

I think deanos last comment has summed this up for us all. We are in for another frustrating summer concluding with the Exit of our captain!!!! I still reckon Barry transfer saga will be drawn out through the summer till after the Euro Champs and we will sign players, not the 6 or seven we crave but 3, all in the Stephen Carr mould!!!! (Give me a break) and then barry will ef off in the last week and we have no chance of replacing him. I really really do hope I am wrong on this!!!!!!

If Barry goes then we must take it on the chin but O'Neill must demand a very high fee 20mill at least in my view or else other teams will think it's easy to take villa's best players and by the end of next season Gabby, Young and Laursen would all be gone. Come On O'Neill dont back down if you must sell Barry at least get a very very very high price for him.

Tallaght Villan, agree with you 100%. Current England international, two years remaining on his contract, we have to be looking for close to 20 million, we have to. No part exchange deals either! We dont need anyones rejects, not good enoughs. Jeez! Rafa wants 15 million for Crouch, and this he says after bidding 10 million for Gareth!! Got to be the joke of the decade.
