Cowans Hopeful Of Keeping Barry

Gordon Cowans believes that the summer will be an interesting time for Villa, and that summer spending should keep Barry here.

Speaking to the Evening Mail Cowans said that this season was Gareth Barry's best by far and that he doesn't need to move to be at a big club.

'There should not be any reason why Gareth should move because we are a big club.

'I have said it for years now that Gareth Barry needs to be playing with players on his level. Hopefully we can bring some players into this football club to keep Gareth with us who are on the level Gareth is.

'That is the only way we will move onwards and upwards.

'This is Gareth's best season. He was outstanding last season, but this season he is head and shoulders above the rest.

'He was absolutely outstanding against Blues, a class above everybody on the pitch.

'We have a chairman with a lot of money and a manager who is up there with the very best there is, in my opnion. If that cannot attract players to the club, I don't know what can.

'And if we can qualify for Europe I'm sure Gareth will stay.'

Cowans was also full of praise for Martin O'Neill, especially in how he's been able to get more out of the players than could be expected.

'The players who are at the club at the moment have been fantastic for attitude and for workrate.

'And there are some real good players at the club as well.

'But, again, we have probably over-achieved. Martin O'Neill has probably got more out of them than could be expected.'

Sid, now there WAS a player, wish there was a younger one of him we could buy!
The Fear
What about Sid-Well, the Chelski scummer?
LUFC1
"Wish there was a younger version of Sid we could buy", why buy one, we already have one. His name is Gareth Barry and he must stay!!!
DeanoVilla
I dont mind Barry leaving, fine hes a good player, club captain and so forth, but if we got a very good fee in the region of 18-20m then he can go. The main concern is can MON attract a good enough replacement, in my eyes I think he probably wont and worse still he would sell him too early in the window, I would keep hold of him till the last minute then up the price; even deny he is available to bring that price above Carricks, then go out and buy a Luca Modric standard of player with all that cash or Micah richards for Right back and CB
shortshadyuk
I think Gareth should be priced even higher than that shortshadyuk,25 to 30 million i would say. Dribblepool want Gareth to play with Gerrard which would make him eaqually as valuable ?? Another thing is is that Gareth is a good well know club player, the sort of player that other players love to play alongside. Can we afford to loose that asset at the moment with our already tiny squad? Couldn't we make an offer for Gerrard? Then the partnership that everyone knows would be fantastic could happen. Sorry if this sounds mad but if you don't reach for the stars then you don't get them. It's about time WE stopped thinking like a mid table team and started to think like a top four giant, well thats what we want to be...........isn't it?? One game to go........COME ON THE VILLA!!! Gordon,Gordon give us a wave, give us a wave, give us a wave. 1976/1985 : APP 286/GOALS 42 (legend)

I wish I had his confidence on 2 fronts. Firstly, that GB will stay even if we make some impressive signings Secondly, that we will sign the number and calibre of players needed to show him that we can trouble the big 4

Whats all this "Gordon Cowans believes that the summer will be an interesting time for Villa" nonsense. Hows about "VILLA LEGEND Gordon Cowans believes that the summer will be an interesting time for Villa." Show some respect!!!!
simonbigron
Villa will bid for Gerrard at 15mil as advised from Dudley. now that is hot news :D
Gruck
I think Barry would listen to the likes of Sid Cowans, I doubt there is anyone attached to Aston Villa who has not got the deepest respect for the opinion of Sid. Villa Legend Indeed.
col8
sid is a legend. really nice bloke aswell, met him a few times at vp.
Stig
DeanoVilla; I don't know if you had the opportunity to see Sid Cowans play? IMO he was better than GB by quite a margin. As for GB questioning who we buy in the summer. I think that is disrespectful of the club that's been paying him a wage for years. If thats the only reason he will stay then it's as well if he went. Surely he's there because he wants to be, not measuring his ambition against MON's. I'm affraid GB has already left in his mind. IMO!!

Sid was quick enough to move off to Bari to further his career, but he soon learned that the grass isn't always greener. The fact though that Sid thinks that Gareth moving away isn't yet a definite done deal, does I admit give me hope.
glensider
Sid in his prime was a gem. Superb. Very Gareth Barryesque. We survived his departure, we'll survive Gareth's. We survived Bruce Rioch's - and that departure I thought (in my more tender years) would spell the end of AVFC.
glensider
it will be such a shame if he goes, there needs to be competition in the league, and if the "Big 4" keep buying up all the best it will never be a fully open competition/.
Dean1
Well said Glensider, yet again a pearl of wisdom. I too thought the departures of some of Villa's most influentual midfielders over the years both from retirement or transfer would spell the end. But Villa are a very traditional club with strong foundations. I have watched Villa's midfield be rebuilt over many years, by a presession managers (thanks to deadly) and we always survive to fight on. We will this time too. GB is going in the summer, of that I have no doubt. MON will rebuild the midfield and soon GB will be a dim and distant memory, just like all the others before him....
