O'Neill confirms Barry bid (AUDIO)

Press Conference Length: 3 Min 15 Sec

After admitting that Liverpool backed up speculation surrounding Gareth Barry by putting in a formal offer, Villa boss Martin O'Neill revealed he was upset at the manner in which the story reached the media.

The bid, O'Neill outlines, is not a straight cash swap but instead player exchanges could be involved - however no decision will be made until the end of the season.

The Irishman adds he has not even discussed the bid with his captain, but expects the player to honour his contract, which still has 2 years left to run, and emphasises he is building a team to compete at the top and does not want to sell his best players.

This is so annoying, but their season has finished and the local rag needs to sell papers. The leak has most likely come from Barry's agent who was asked a direct question from a reporter. I just want us to finish the season with a fluorish and not get distracted.

Certainly not the ideal time for all of this stuff to surface, not with two very important games ahead of us. If Gareth is indeed to move on, as I suspect he is, then lets shelve all talk on the subject until after the West Ham game. Not of course that I'm suggesting that we as a club are encouraging such rumours, far from it, the leaks etc seem to be coming from the Anfield end. Cant think that Gareth's agent is involved at all tarzan, at least I would certainly hope he's not.

will he go to Liverpool?
merlin
Merlin, very probably. I agree with Glensider. It doesn't bother me too much, as we can move on, as long as we don't get sh"""ted on the price. Spurs and Charlton always manage to get top dollar for their jewels, why can't we?
tarzan
Agree tarzan, thats the key thing. We've 'given away' way too players at ridiculously low prices. If he goes, we have to get top dollar. Two years on his contract, current England international, top quality footballer who would grace any premiership outfit, we've got to hold out for around 15 million quid, and not be fobbed off with Liverpool rejects as make-weights in the deal.

Are you kidding me? I really think barry will stay. listen to MON, he is showing great ambition, and i think he fought our corner superbly. what a legend. liverpool are acting like a non-league club. we are on the up and gareth barry knows it. we want to overtake liverpool and if barry stays i think we can. come on bazza don't move.

I'll be VERY disappointed, upset and surprised if Barry left, as he's shown real class this season, BUT there's surely no point keeping a player that doesn't want to be there? No one is bigger than this club and as long as we get the relevant money for him (around £12 mill I think is fair) we will replace him and move on.
In MON we trust!
Lets hope he stays with you. Why would he want to go to Liverpool anyway?

I find it hard to understand why Liverpool would think we want their cast offs. If the players are not good enough to hold down a regular first team place at Anfield, and none of those offered fit that catergory, why should they be good enough for Villa? The truth is they are not good enough for us at least not swapped for Barry. Perhaps if they offered all three, Riise, Carson and Pennant plus Crouch then it could be worth considering. Mind you they still would not replace GB. Me, I'll leave it to MON to sort out and if, and it is a big 'IF', GB still wants to leave after he had heard MON's plans then in my view he is worth £16m minimum.
