A Counter Offer, Through The Press, To Liverpool

An Offer To Liverpool

I would formally like to offer the following to Liverpool Football Club and their mini-me-Tom Jones-lookalike Rafa Benitez.

Fernando Torres to Villa.

In exchange we would allow you to take Bella the mascot, Moustapha Salifou, Thomas Sorensen, you can have Scott Carson back and we'll throw in 3.50

We'll do the negotiations as you know best, through the press.

How does that sound?

"Liverpool do their business through the press" - so you are 100 per cent sure it wasn't Gareth Barry's agent who went running to the papers in order to get his client, and as a consequence himself, more cash in the summer?

Not that there is any suggestion any tapping up as gone on, but why is it against the rules anyway? In real life - and football clubs like to be thought of as real world companies - headhunting is a multi-billion pound industry. What's the difference? Hmm?

Like DerryVillan said, are you sure that it wasn't Barry's agent that leaked this to the press? This is unlike Rafa, he never talks about who Liverpool like to sign before they sign. He only says that we have targets, doesn't mention any names.

Exactly. And Barry/Barry's agent has everything to gain from this being leaked, while Liverpool/Rafa have everything to lose. Occam's razor suggests it wasn't Liverpool doing the leaking.

Why would Liverpool leak this to the press? It would only invite other clubs to make bids on Barry. Increased competition for his signature isn't in Liverpool's best interest, it would only drive his price up, and who would benefit most by this?

I don't get it, they have Benayoun, Masch, Gezza, Alonso and loads of other MF's.....why Barry unless they're looking to overhaul their squad. I personally want Barry to stay and hope that we buy Alonso, Crouch, Bent, Finnan. They want to unsettle us before possible Europenan quaification so that the carrot for Barry is even more tempting. I know the difference between UEFA and CL JD but I'm saying that they have a Tottenham plethora-style abundance of MF's and are being greedy...just like Chelsea buying Sidwell - damn wrong. Things could really take a down-turn for Gareths careers if he went. If he thinks Masch and Alonso are gonna step aside then it may be tears aplenty. I understand Gareths CL temptation and the England recognition / money that comes with it but I hope he stays and that we buy big to prove to him over one more season that we mean business. Come the break MON really needs to pull out ALL the stops or it will be bye-bye Young too. 2 mf's, 2 defenders, 1 striker, plus goalie.

Ther's no point us getting worked up into a frenzy over this. Usually the player leaves for the top 4 club in these situations (can't remember any examples where they haven't). The only annoyance is if we get 10-15m for him. We need another team interested!.

jonah, Knowing about a club's interest about a player is one thing, knowing the actual amount of the bid is another. Why would Liverpool leak the amount of their bid? It would lead to other clubs simply out bidding us.
JohnDoe

02/05/2008 18:17:00

Agreed Jonah. Barry on the left...what would Babel do?!??!? I'd buy Babel to have in our squad any day regardless. Alonso too, so much better than NRC who has a average end pass / final ball. Please buy in the window MON, PLEASE. p.s. Gerrard did the leak originally after a almighty prompt by an interviewer - setup or what!

jonah, So what you're saying is that Liverpool intentionally opened with a relatively low bid and leaked that bid to the press fully knowing that it will flush other clubs, including Chelsea, into bidding on Barry and raise his price so that we would outbid them again. Is that what you're saying?

MON confirmed the liverdisease made a bid. The question is why would they do it and make it public the day before a must win match? Answer: If we make Europe, Barry stays. If we don't, he goes. They want him, so they try to unsettle us at this key time. Come on boys (and Arsenal)
