Mellberg - Future Is Good For Villa

Olof Mellberg showed yesterday that he might be on his way out but he is still a Villa man through and through. Mellberg, who is off to Juventus at the end of this season, was brought off five minutes early in the derby game yesterday to a standing ovation. He responded by shaking his fists in victory and looked visibly moved when going to the bench.

I thought the gesture by Martin O'Neill bringing him off early was an excellent one, although I do hope he gets to play the last game at home v Wigan so we can give him an even bigger send off. He's never let us down and has always been 100% committed.

The bearded wonder told avfc.co.uk: 'This means a lot to me and to the fans and the whole club. It was fantastic. To come off as a substitute knowing that you are going to win the game, so it was nice to celebrate with the fans. I don't know why I was taken off, but it was nice in a way because of the reception I had. Hopefully that was in the gaffer's mind. He wanted to give me something and it was nice.'

He finished, 'I think the way we have performed and the way those young lads have enjoyed their football this season, it bodes well for the future.'

Would you play him for the Wigan game or if fit see Craig Gardner take his place?

young_jonah
there were a lot of nice moments at the match, but ollys exit was fantastic. made me sad that he is going. of course he should play, he would want to, and so would all of us.
leftfoot
I want him to cancel his contract with Juve and stay with us,he has to play in all 3 games if we want Europe. When he got took off yesterday and seeing that emotion in his face will be remembered forever.
ASPINALL
So sad that he is leaving. His reaction as he left the pitch yesterday was brilliant.

Last home game, he's got to have it. Anyone gonna do the dressing up like a viking thing?
PTP

ric112
My mate and myself are going to the West Ham game dressed in Sweden shirts and Sweden flags in honour of Ollie.

Does anyone know any suitable bearded replacements we could move for in the summer? The Villa defence is never as strong as when we have a bearded monster patrolling the back line - it's become somewhat of a tradition!
YatesyVillain
We should maybe retire the beard from people wearing a Villa shirt or just ban them from Villa Park, after the Wigan game of course ;-D
Villan444
The future is certainly brighter than its been for a long, long time. We need to push on though, not rest on our laurels. The summer will be a very important time for the club, with hopefully the arrival of quality in numbers.
