Villa Boss Says Maloney In Plans

Martin O'Neill has insisted that Shaun Maloney is still in his plans for the run in to the end of the season.

Having been dropped for the last two games and with Stiliyan Petrov in good form - at long last - Maloney looks under pressure.

MON told the Birmingham Mail:

'Shaun still has a part to play, absolutely. At this minute, we've changed it around a bit so we've got a bit more strength in the middle of the field. But Shaun can play a number of positions. He's just had a rest these last couple of weeks but he will be back.'

He also mentions further competition for the young Scotsman's place adding, 'Patrik Berger has come in again but this is about as much rotation as we've been doing this season.'

Be interesting to see if Shaun is willing to sit it out at Villa and wait to make an impact of if he will be looking for pastures new this summer.

Why do we think that just because a player is not in the eleven he will be looking to move. It doesn't seem to happen elsewhere. Also if he leaves it is viewed negatively when some rotation of players must be healthy.

As much as I like Maloney for some of his livewire displays - I don't really rate him as being part of our longer term plans. If we could sell him for 3 million or so i'd probably wish him well and send him on his way....providing we have a replacement of course!

I agree, Yatesy. His inconsistency in the premier league has left me unconvinced. However until serious re-enforcements are brought in, it's all hands on deck i'm afraid

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him move on during the summer. He no doubt is looking for more playing time, and I'm not convinced that he's going to get that at Brum B6. Would be nice to keep him as a squad player, but he's hardly likely to want to settle for that. Thing is of course, if he goes, then thats another one who has to be replaced.

I'm told that Sunderland have been linked to a summer move for Shaun. Maybe a move back closer to home, plus regular first team football may well appeal to him.
