Cudicini In & Carson Sent Packing?

According to red top, The Sun, Villa are in the chase for Chelsea's Carlo Cudicini.

The 34-year-old Italian goalkeeper apparently has already told Chelsea that he wants to leave despite being under contract until the end of next season.

The Sun claim that his first choice would be a move to Villa with Manchester City also in the race.

The paper quotes a source 'close' to Cudicini as saying:

'There will be another meeting with Chelsea to decide what is best for the club and Carlo. There is interest from Aston Villa as well as Manchester City.'

They also state that in the last four seasons he has only made 23 premiership appearances following the arrival of Petr Cech.

Surely 3 or 4 seasons to late and he wouldn't come here as an understudy for someone else?

The paper say that O'Neill will look at Cudicini as he has decided against making Scott Carson's loan move permanent with a 9million fee wanted.

Talking about Carson, former keeper legend Ray Clemence says that Carson will overcome his problems and be a top keeper.

On the official site the former England keeper said: 'He is only 22 and, the younger you are, the more criticism hurts and he did take a lot for that game against Croatia when there were other people on the field that night who didn't play that well either. Unfortunately he has taken the brunt of it since and I've been at a couple of grounds to watch Villa where the fans haven't been the kindest to him. It is difficult at the moment for him but I know him, he is a strong character, he is young and he will bounce back and the ability will not leave him. I know that he will come back because he has great ability.'

Can't say I've noticed that much abuse, have you?

Oh, and whilst we are talking about keepers, Martin O'Neill has slammed reports that he is after Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.

Has Cech really been there 4 years? I dont think so!!! Think this is year 3. 4 years ago this week we beat them 3-2 in the league at Villa Park and Ranieri was still manager with Cudicini in goal, I believe he was in fact the keeper of the season that year. I say sign him for 2mil and offer Liverpool for 4mil for Carson. A total of 6mil would be good for a great keeper and a one for the future.
young_jonah
Oh and thank god we are not after Jussi, I would rather have an unproven american keeper than that relegation battling pile of poo
young_jonah
Whoops I missed a season out!!! Yes you are right. But still would like to see Cudicini here over Jussi and the american one who plays in that pants league with Becks and Angel.
young_jonah
Quality goalie with top level experience.
british84
isnt he injury prone, he always seems to get injured every time he plays
JASON
i don't know what to make of cudicini now. a few years back i thought he was one of the best keepers in the league, but it seems like he is quite happy picking up a fat pay cheque for doing nothing at chelsea. if i were him i would want to leave as soon as it became apparent that cech was one of the world's best keepers in order to fulfill ambitions in the game. however, i would love for us to sign him and have him prove me wrong.
ric112
He has experience at the highest level that is more than can be said about Jussi, Guzan (who?) and Myhill. Of all the keepers who have been linked Robbo is the only one that has a CV that comes close to Carlo.
young_jonah
we could do much worse than cudicini. it'll be him, Guzan or Boruc next season - maybe even 2 of the 3. but young jonahs' idea of 6mil for he and carson is a good one.
leftfoot
Cheers Leftfoot. I think Villa should call Liverpools bluff and offer 4mil, 5mil tops for Carson and see what they say. 8-10mil is too much.
young_jonah
cudicini was easily the best keeper in the prem before cech showed up, he'd still be quality and regarding his injuries, i dont think they'll be a problem, part of laursen staying fit has to be to do with our state of the art training facilities.

I rather like the idea of maintaining our policy of bringing in young english players, and Carson is only going to get better. Hopefully all this keeper talk is just Villa trying to get some leverage on the crazy price. Cudicini is far more interested with being in the media and living a cushey lifestyle than playing football these days, and it shows when he does get a game.
SchoolBoyError
quality keeper 34 right age for that position, !! take him now!! please!
krisvilla
For all those pro Carson fans that say that he can only get better. I totaly agree, well he couldn't get much worse could he. Cudicini for now and the next 2-4 years (perfect age to be a top level keeper) with Guzan (if he has the potential many seem tro think) as his understudy and Taylor in there competing for a place should sort out our goalkeeping concerns.
Villan Of The North
Agree VOTN, Cudicini is a great experienced keeper at his peak, Guzan is a good young prospect that comes from a league that seems to produce very good quality keepers. Carson has done nothing but dissappoint me this season, and i don't want another season of his clumsy goalkeeping. Cudicini and Guzan together should be cheaper than Carson on his own, and we'd get one hell of a lot of experience in Cudicini, and a good deal of potential in Guzan.

Carson is too much of an overpriced gamble, but talk of Robinson thrilled me less. We need a goalkeeping clear-out, of that there's no doubt. Cudicini appeals to me more than does the Bolton keeper Jaaskelainen, and maybe then with a younger keeper in reserve to learn the ropes and push our number one, we might just have the right set-up in place. Guzan I cant comment upon, having never seen him play. How come you are so convinced of his abilities AstonMartinOneill?

Anything is better than Frank Carson. Cudicini........mmm would he move away from the bright lights of London ? Would he upset the dressing room at VP ? I would like to see Boruc given a chance or i still would give Taylor a run, he deserves a chance and doesn't let us down (other than at Man City a couple of years back). I have the dreaded fear of yet another goalkeeping blunder in a Small Heath game. Please let the gods shine on Frank Carson for just 1 more game and keep another clean sheet, before sending him packing with his tail between his legs back to the land of the shell suits.
HolteEnder43
Cudicini was the best keeper in the league but hasn't played more than 3 or 4 games a season for the last four seasons, last time saw him was the FA cup game against Barnsley and he looked pretty poor. Having sat out the best four years of his career in exchange for money do we really want to take a risk on him. Jussi has played forty plus games a season and has only looked suspect since fat sam left Bolton and the team in front of him has fallen apart, would take both but which would be first choice?
Waldorf
Stuart Taylor - perpetually ignored - yet the starting 'keeper in over twenty games for Arsenal during their championship season as Seaman recovered from injuries.... Top 'keeper, top bloke...
gmvillan
Jaaskelinen is over-rated, Cudicini is a far better 'keeper.
gmvillan
Anyone else notice how Cudicini rumours crop up EVERY year at this time - and he stays at Chelsea to fight for a place, never whines (unlike Sorensen who started before he was even back from injury), and still produces whenever called upon.....
gmvillan
Jaaskelinen, Cudicini American guy... Surely got to be better than Carson, Sorro, Talyor...Although i think Taylor will become a top keeper if he keeps learning and fighting for number 1 at Villa.
Villa 4 Ever
Agree with gmvillan in that I also think that Jaaskelinen is over-rated. Also tend to agree that Stuart Taylor has been overlooked, unfairly at times.
