Press Determined To Unsettle Barry?

According to The Sun, one of a few papers who seem determined that Villa will offload Gareth Barry, say that Steven Gerrard is 'backing' Rafa Benitez's wish to bring Barry to Anfield. Isn't that tapping up a player? It will certainly have an unsettling effect on our captain.

According to the red top the scouse and England midfielder, who is close friends with Barry, 'gave the plan an emphatic thumbs-up'. They continued: 'SunSport revealed on Tuesday that Benitez has made Barry, 27, his No 1 transfer priority. He has contacted Villa boss Martin O'Neill and has told him he can have first option on the likes of Peter Crouch and John Arne Riise as part of a possible player-exchange deal.'

The fee if no exchange can be arranged according to the press is £12million. According to our latest poll there isn't a fee around worth selling Barry for as it would send out the wrong signals!

Maybe if we have to sell him we take Peter Crouch, Scott Carson and John Arne Riise + £5million! :o)

As far as I can see, there are no quotes for this story but if Gerrard has been talking about another teams player, then we should go all out not to sell the player to that team, as said it seems to me that there is an attempt here to unsettle our skipper.

agree with our poll results so far, it would send out the wrong signal. I do fear the prospect of champions league football might be too good to turn down though.

i don`t think the press are trying to unsettle barry i doubt they give a ***** they have to have somthing to hand in to their boss and thats all it is.As for barry leaving i hope he doesn`t but i am not naive enough to think that players "care" about clubs enough to put the club over their own career or bank balance and rightly so.If he goes he goes he can be replaced like any other player.

i dunno, barry seems like a genuinely decent, loyal bloke. i can see him wanting to stay at villa and getting US into the champions league and becoming a true villa great. besides, do you really think liverpool are in a position to talk about summer transfer targets in their current predicament? and why would barry want to move there when there is no certainty about who the manager or chairman will be next season? the sun has created bull**** rumours time, and time, and time again. its so tedious i wonder why anyone reads that **** anymore.

Barry has been linked with 'Big 4' clubs every summer for as long as I can remember. He's resisted the allure and the money of Chelsea and Liverpool before, so why would he move now? We've got one of the best man-managers in the world, he's our captain, and we're improving every season. He's not going to go to Liverpool, whose manager will most likely be out the door this summer, and whose owners can't stop arguing with each other in the press.

I agree barry is a great bloke putting your own career first doesn`t make you a bad person i don`t understand it when football fans take that view if he goes i wil lwish him well and move on all players can be replaced nowadays,i reckon he will stay though.

I don't see this happening, especailly after he decided to stick with us two summers ago. It's no coincidence that the week before a very important derby clash unsubstaniated rumours are thrown at the press designed to unsettle our captain and perhaps even the whole squad. This gossip has probably been started by Small Heath!

Mr O'Neill has been in the press saying that he "won't hold people at the club against their will". I think GB is going to leave. ________________________________________________________________ If he does then it will be more fool him, as Liverpool are in decline and Villa are on the up!

I think Barry only needs to have a quick look at the Prem table... how much more have Liverpool spent than us season after season??.. yes they are in the semi finals of the Champs League but thet are not exactly a million miles away from us in the Prem..we have had one of the smallest squads in the Prem for several seasons now.. surely this is the summer to add quality and numbers..surely we will be breaking into the top 4 soon if this plan swings into action. Liverpool have Torres and Gerrard + lots of unknowns and + lots more overated unknowns..O'Neil already has an English core to his side. I think he will continue this in the summer and people will stand up and notice AVFC once more. O'Neil has now helped good English players playing in Claret N' Blue get the recognition from the national side they deserve. That's what Barry wanted.. he is now an English regular (& Future captain?). Next thing Barry now wants is to be playing regularly in Europe. We haven't got that yet. But we WILL soon. UEFA 1st then Champs league would be shame if he missed out cus thats the way we're heading regardless. UTV

Agree with evo, Liverpool wont progress next season, if it wasn't for Torres they would 7/8th in the league this year. Villa are on the way up. If he was 2/3 years younger it would be a simple decision for him, as he would haave time on his side. But he is 27 and probably doesn't want to wait another 2/3 (hopefully) years for CL football. I would like him to stay, he has been a fantastic player for us for many years now and is the type of player we want at Villa.

He'd only play every third game with Rafa's rotation so there's no way he go!!

If Barry goes he goes! Life moves on! But Barry is afool if he goes to Liverpool, ManU I could understand, or even Chelski, But Liverpool.... He will play 1 in 3 games for a team not much better than us. Then the manager that signed him will get the sack! Then what???

Ian Taylor is Barry's agent. That's got to work in our favour. Surely he'd rather he stayed at his beloved VP than earn him loadsa money!?!? Erm....!

I have long thought that we might lose Gareth this summer, half-way through his four year deal. At twenty-seven the guy is fast running out of time to start winning honours, or even testing his abilities in the Champions League. Have we done enough since MON's arrival to convince him that our return to competitive european club football is just around the corner? Have we brought in the type of quality players he was expecting upon signing his new deal? I dont think that its the red-tops that are unsettling him, I think in reality that this was always a situation we were probably going to have to face, particularly as he now seems established in the England squad.

we MUST get into UEFA to keep him. Villa is on the up and he could go down as our best player ever if he finishes his career with us. Isn't that better than being lost in the mess that are the scousers?

I think it is an attempt to tap up Barry, and I think this is just the start, the pressure will build and build both in the papers and in the England training sessions, Liverpool is more likely than Chelsea as barry would be replacing Fat Frank and the show pony, Lets hope Rafa loses the big bucks league and gets sacked!

Adam Deuce; Ian Taylor is a business man with his clients interest at heart. He will do what's best for his client, in this case Gareth Barry. He would'nt be in business long if he made the choice based on loyalties to a club he once played for.
