Villa's Zidane Close To Start

Villa's Zidane Close To Start

Martin O'Neill has spoken about our Togolese international signing Moustapha Salifou and says at some stage he does want to give him a first team start.

He told the official site,

'He came on at Old Trafford, but it's hard to make an assessment based on that. The pitch was really sodden by the time he came on so a couple of his passes went astray, which is unusual for him. He's a really nice footballer and it's a pity in many aspects that we didn't have him pre-season. He's always been fighting against players who were in front of him - either because we've been winning a few games and they've been doing alright or players whose fitness was ahead of him.'

Adding, 'But he's improving in that aspect and at some stage or another I'd like to start him in a game. But it's a fine balancing act. His attitude from day one has been excellent.'

He certainly seems to get rave reviews from those who follow the reserves so hopefully he'll get his chance and prove a canny signing. Always was going to be a no risk signing anyway, he hardly cost the earth, if he doesn't work out no one will really bat an eyelid but if he does break into the full team MON will have pulled off a right cheeky move!

Salifou interests me in that does it REALLY take an entire season to get match fit?... somehow I think not else the fitness coaches are doing a poor job or the player is being lazy, i think 2-3 months tops to get you upto scratch is fine... Why is he the Togalese Zidane is he a creative flair player? can he do the attacking midfield role better than say Petrov?

Togolesse Zidane is a bit of stretch (obvious I know). From what I've seen at the reserve games he can pick a pass and isn't afraid to have a shot (stopped this recently :-(.) he looks comfy on the ball and is strong, don't know if he'd be a step up from Petrov, depends which Petrov turns up I guess!

Give the boy a game Mart. Lets see what he's made of. I have reservations based on what I've seen at reserve team level, but I'd be happy to be proved wrong (again).

Unless he gets a start we'll never really be able to judge his credentials. Brief ten minute appearances here and there aren't going to help the guy.
