Martin O'Neill knows that Villa have got to get back to their mean defending ways after conceding way too many goals this season The Villa boss told the official site that they've got to work to put that right for next season after going on a run of 20 games without a clean sheet.

'If we're going to progress and continue progressing in the manner we're doing, which is pretty pleasing, we're going to have to concede less goals.

He is however more pleased with the goals scored (56 goals in 33 games)

He has also told Zat Knight that you are never too old to learn new tricks. The 27-year-old purchase from Fulham was complimented by O'Neill for his Bolton performance and his attitude playing in the reserves after missing out on the Manchester United game, which he said in the Birmingham Mail was 'top class' but added,

'He will be aware that the competition at the club - despite the loss of Curtis Davies - will be something I want to intensify in the summer. He wants to improve his game.' Adding, 'He should be okay with the more straightforward centre-forward but all of us could learn from the smaller, agile forwards - even midfielders going with runners, it's hard work. There's the old adage of you never stop learning but I believe if players really want to improve their willingness and their agility then, with the advent of sports science in our game, the wherewithal is there in front of you.'

He as also complimented the training facilities and staff including fitness dude (technical term) Jim Henry.

Zat's o.k. A valuable squad member, gives his all, and at times gets unfair stick from us supporters. I'm not saying that he's a better long term prospect than Curtis D., but as of right now I'm certainly glad we've got him onboard.

yeah he gets stick cos he does fall asleep and know he can do better but yes he is a valuable squad player. We need davies back though suppose that will be Oct/Nov nasty injury he got, coincided with our loss of form

4m was a bit much, i had very little problems with Cahill being the 1st choice backup/starter with Laursen...

People criticised Zat for the goal against Bor'o, some called for his head, the reality for me was Villa defending facing their own goal, caught too high up the pitch time and time again. Hopefully MON will learn from this and keep the defenders behind the ball.

He's been a reasonable signing, and will continue to do a job for us. Worth the money spent. He's been o.k. in my book.
