O'Neill Dismisses Barry Chelsea Link

Martin O'Neill wants Gareth Barry to continue the form he showed against Bolton - which saw him score most points this week in the : actim stats - right up until the end of the season.

He told the official site: 'I said after the game he was back to his best, because his performances in recent times by all of us have been a bit below par, but that was dynamic. Even before he got the first goal there was a determination about him. The goal of course helped him enormously, giving him a big boost of confidence and he was fantastic for us. Hopefully we can see more of the same over these last few matches.'

The Villa boss has also issued a hands off warning (well, sort of) to Chelsea after speculation linking our skipper to Stamford Bridge.

MON said in an interview with the Birmingham Mail: 'I don't know where these stories come from. Gareth has another two years on his contract. He's been linked with Chelsea for about two seasons, but no-one from Chelsea has ever contacted me about him and they have had a couple of managers and the same chief executive during that time.'

My worry is, if Chelsea did approach, would Gareth be tempted to pastures new? He was expecting signings last summer/January to match his ambitions and with them not materialising, will his mind wonder if a big four team came knocking?

I don't think we need him. We have too many midfielders and he isn't better than what we've got!

lets hope avram grant/his suitable replacement feel the same way...

FofB Gareth may not be technically better than what you have but Barry gives balance to midfield. McClaren realised that, but bottled it against Croatia, changing his formation just so he could include Gerrard and Lampard. Gerrard and Lampard are better players than Barry, but a Barry/Gerrard or Barry/Lampard combination is far far better than Gerrard/Lampard. It is about balance, not just individual talent. That is why Gareth is such an outstanding player. He is good enough to play a number of different roles in a team very well, and because of that is invaluable to ANY team.

If we get Essien & Cech then I think MON might just be tempted!

krfeskivilla, I agree with you that he provides balance to the team, but still I think we're covered in this department. I would prefer a winger or a playmaker.

Competitive European club football must surely be a major attraction to Gareth. Interesting.

Better hurry up and get there then, hadn't we
steff_the_villan
yeah but what would be far more satisfying for him is to get there with villa and eventually get a statue outside villa park...

Yeah Gareth,go to Chelsea as it`s worked wonders for Sidwell`s career !!!
ASPINALL
Sidwell, forgot about him. Wouldn't mind him at B6.

Talking about transfer rumours, I read the following on football365.com : "Daniel van Buyten has snubbed a summer move to Aston Villa - because he would prefer to work with Jurgen Klinsmann"

Guess MON will soon be denying rumours linking moves away from VP for Ash and Gabby.
