'If It's Football, It's Vital'

O'Neill Says Europe IS Still On.

Martin O'Neill has refused to rule out qualifying for Europe despite our weekend thumping at the hands of Manchester United.

He told the Express and Star,

'We have to win our own particular league, which we are not out of yet. We have a lot of work to do. But with six games remaining we are capable of getting back into it.'

With Portsmouth having not thrown their name in the hat for the Inter two bob cup, it appears our mini league is Blackburn and Manchester City, the former who have just leapfrogged us and the latter are equal on points and behind us just on goal difference.

West Ham are also only 4 points behind us, which is impressive for them as their season has been decimated with injuries and remember, we still have to play them (last game of the season at Upton Park) so that could be a crucial game for us, especially as we are also playing for the position as each place higher in the league earns the club thousands more in placement prizes.

Next up Bolton, a must win if we want to make sure our season doesn't crumble, then we have Derby away, who will be playing for nothing but pride as they have become the first club to be confirmed relegated in March.

Then we face the local derby at Villa Park, never an easy game and they have pulled off some shock results recently to pull themselves slightly away from the bottom three. To finish we have Everton away, Wigan at home and then as said, the visit to Upton Park.

With our recent run of losses, 5th now has to be out of the question barring a capitulation by Everton and us winning all our games! So surely the only chance is the Inter and to do that, we have to pull back ahead of Blackburn who are a tough team with the bit between their teeth.

Should be an interesting run in to the end of the season, lets hope we can sell out next weekends game at home to Bolton to give the team the backing they obviously need with their recent 'wobble'....!

If only we'd bought someone who could score in January, Jermain Defoe would have shot us into 5th on his current form for Pompey!

What do poeple want him to say???? we have given up on europe? he's damded if he does and damded if he don't!!!!

Defow was never going to come to Villa while Redknapp was in for him. He signed him for West Ham as a boy!!!!
gappy65
Why oh why do we keep harping on about players that have signed for other clubs? Defoe was NEVER going to sign for us, no matter how much cash we offered, it's been tried by Newcastle repeatedly and they too lose out. Most of the players we're after have enough money and will only move to us on the basis of 1) the guarantee of cup football of any description 2) the selling job of MON. Number 2) is a poor second. Yakubu, Defoe, Diarra, Jagielka, Bent, Hutton all went to teams better than us at the moment and the players wanted to go to them - not us. It's hard to take but those are the facts. Our team has got Marbella syndrome (like Spurs), they are winding down for post season.

"lets hope we can sell out next weekends game at home to Bolton to give the team the backing they obviously need with their recent 'wobble'....!" Erm... It was a full house against Sunderland.... I thought the VP faithful were as jaded as the players. The buzz of recent times was missing. We blame the players for complacency and end of season fatigue but the same could be levied at the supporters. Let's REALLY get behind them on Saturday. Holte Enders in the Sky!

You're right Adam. We badly need cup football; that's what's missing and one or two really top notch players. If we beat Bolton, that will send them down; as there's a bit of a gap developing down there.

I think Gareth Barry should leave if Villa aren't qualifying for Europe.

In fairness you would not expect any manager to come out and say"well thats it another season over" with six games still to play he has to get the players back on track, even if we fail to qualify for Europe this season has been a good one. Some great performances, everyone knows what MON has to do in the transfer window, sure as eggs is eggs we will be competing with Newcastle, Spurs and Pompy for the players available for the wages we have. If nothing else its going to be Interesting.

welshboy78, I take it you're not a Villa fan.

The Villa faithful at Old Trafford certainly wasn't jaded, singing throughout the game, shame the team couldn't respond accordingly. I think we have all accepted top 6 is now out of question but we must get into the Intertoto.

I like Villa and Martin O'Neill BUT i also like Gareth Barry and think he is possibly one of the most under rated players in the premier league. He should at least be playing in the uefa cup. I also don't think that any decent player should be in the same team as Marlon Harewood!!!!!!!!!

I think that its fair to say that the Inter-Toto offers our only realistic route into competitive European club football, but even for that to happen we are clearly going to have to get back on track immediately, starting with three points this weekend against Megsons pitiful shower. Wonder if Pompey will be late applicants for an Inter-Toto place should West Brom end their F.A. Cup dream this Saturday?
