Martin O'Neill has refused to rule out qualifying for Europe despite our weekend thumping at the hands of Manchester United.
He told the Express and Star,
'We have to win our own particular league, which we are not out of yet. We have a lot of work to do. But with six games remaining we are capable of getting back into it.'
With Portsmouth having not thrown their name in the hat for the Inter two bob cup, it appears our mini league is Blackburn and Manchester City, the former who have just leapfrogged us and the latter are equal on points and behind us just on goal difference.
West Ham are also only 4 points behind us, which is impressive for them as their season has been decimated with injuries and remember, we still have to play them (last game of the season at Upton Park) so that could be a crucial game for us, especially as we are also playing for the position as each place higher in the league earns the club thousands more in placement prizes.
Next up Bolton, a must win if we want to make sure our season doesn't crumble, then we have Derby away, who will be playing for nothing but pride as they have become the first club to be confirmed relegated in March.
Then we face the local derby at Villa Park, never an easy game and they have pulled off some shock results recently to pull themselves slightly away from the bottom three. To finish we have Everton away, Wigan at home and then as said, the visit to Upton Park.
With our recent run of losses, 5th now has to be out of the question barring a capitulation by Everton and us winning all our games! So surely the only chance is the Inter and to do that, we have to pull back ahead of Blackburn who are a tough team with the bit between their teeth.
Should be an interesting run in to the end of the season, lets hope we can sell out next weekends game at home to Bolton to give the team the backing they obviously need with their recent 'wobble'....!
If only we'd bought someone who could score in January, Jermain Defoe would have shot us into 5th on his current form for Pompey!
